I've thought about this before, not sure why they even bothered to make type C.
Higher current capacity?
Also USB3 features and throughput in a smaller form factor, suitable for tablets and phones. Having the same connector on both ends also makes it easier for one connector to serve different roles--a single connector on a notebook can be used to charge the notebook from the wall, or to charge a phone from the notebook, or to connect peripherals all with the same USB C-C cable.
I got a Nexus 5X recently and personally I like the USB C connector a lot, and one bonus benefit for phones is that it's WAY easier to clean impacted pocket lint out of a C connector than a micro B. The plastic tongue inside the micro B socket is so close to the inside of the metal shell that you can't really get any sort of implement in there when it gets fouled with dust and lint. C has enough room to get a needle or somesuch in there when needed.
