Title: Who on this form have had the Covid-19 virus?
Post by: tpowell1830 on September 12, 2020, 11:26:01 pm
This forum has many viewers, so this could be interesting. Call it Covid-19, Chi-na virus, CCP virus, Wuhan Flu or whatever you like, but, this virus has been plagueing the world for over 6 months now, so I was hoping to get some kind of data that shows how prevalent the virus is.

Please answer truthfully.

You should add another option which is like " I do not know if I had the virus or not", since there are people who have it with no symptoms.

Based on the wording of the first option I believe tpowell1830 wants it this way. You can read the second option as "My situation is other than the first option."

Thanks for the suggestion, but I want crisp clean data.

As Zeyneb suggested, I do not want to confuse the data. Either you KNOW that you had it through testing, or you did not have it.

You want a partial picture which is statistically likely to support a particular viewpoint.

Needs another option: I've been _trying_ hard to catch it, since I have a supply of HCQ (+zinc+Zpack) and want to personally check it actually works as so very widely advertised. But no luck so far dammit.

I should probably stop taking 2000 IU of D3, lots of ascorbic acid, and Zn daily, for any chance of catching COVID-19.

Btw, completely off topic but far more enjoyable, check out the French lady singer 'Pomme' on youtube. Really lovely voice.

If you are taking HCQ+zinc in light dosage  prophylaxis  as some medical staff are doing note that you may become infected but asymptomatic.

Shouldn't the second choice be "I don't know." ?

I don't think anyone can choose the second option and be certain they are correct.

I'm stuck getting tested every 2 weeks or so right now. Considering I don't really go anywhere with human beings right now I have very high confidence in my "No".

From March to May, I woke up and went to bed with a sore throat, though, usually during the day it would subside as long as I resting.  Part of March and April, around once to twice a day it felt like I was breathing air as thick as soup.  Without a fever, I was not able to get tested, though, since my family is in their 80s, I could/would not see any of them until late June, and then this would only be visiting outdoors.

Doing a 50% light workout actually helped with the thick air breathing in late April.  I also know I probably got it from my local convenience store just before our Province went into lockdown.

I have been heavily isolated and working remote since march. Haven't gotten sick yet. That said, an interesting datapoint in my sphere of life is that multiple people I know got violently ill with an unidentified but influenza-like illness last fall before anyone was really talking about covid. They all recovered, but it was hell. A covid antibody test for them might yield interesting results.

A related question on two different forums, EEVblog and a Romanian only forum (also electronics related, same question but in Ro).

This poll ranks up there with "have you stopped beating your wife? Answer yes or no!"

Ignore it

I know one super contributor that has however I won't name them.  :P

More concerning is the few other longstanding members whose posts have ceased in the last few months.
Hope they're OK.

The debate is pointless and people here are sick of hearing about the virus. If you have a magical new vaccine pray do tell, else join something like folding at home and help!

Definitely not crisp or clean.

It's an extremely biased sample because I suspect people who go on this forum is heavily correlated with:
1) education level
2) social tendencies (introverted, rarely going outside)
3) demographics (most > 30 years old)
4) location (many countries and areas under-represented)
etc etc.
And of course people who would answer a poll question selects for a certain personality that may or may not be correlated with taking covid safety precautions.

Finally if you have actually tested positive for covid, you are probably dealing with the aftermath of isolation (lost job?) and less likely to be idly browsing the forum and answering random polls.

That's not how it works. Either you know that you had it or you do not know if you had it or you have a false positive.

Maybe just ask if anyone had been diagnosed with that crap if that's what you want to know?

Besides, I think Dave said he is tired of those silly corona polls and will be deleting them.

Stating "I have not had covid" would be speculation. In fact, I have had some sort of virus with the full gamut of symptoms and severity greater than anything I've previously experienced, but I can't say what it was because no testing was available.

I just noticed that I spelled "forum" wrong and I fixed the spelling...

I see there are many opinions about the validity of the poll. Since this is a technical forum, I would think that overall results will be different than the general populace because many of us technical people are not really "people" persons and don't tend to hang out in crowds. By simply taking the poll on a technical forum, I would expect the results to differ from worldwide, general population data.

I could be wrong, but the data of this 10 day poll on an electronics forum should be interesting, no less. I am not trying to take away the devastation of this virus, or on the contrary add to the ethos. It just occurred to me that electronics/technical people are typically more secluded, because of introverted tendencies, than the general population.

I have not had the virus, although my son (46 years old) and his fiance(42) have both had the virus, both confirmed with testing. My son's fiance works at a major hospital here in Houston and is a Respiratory Therapist. She works with Covid patients every day (for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week during the peak). She gets tested weekly with the usual test and my son was tested after his illness that lasted 14 days, I believe by testing his antibodies. She was infected with the virus first and then him. Her 15 year old daughter did not get the virus and lives with her in the same house. My son is a technical person, but, he contracted the virus due to his relationship with his fiance,a medical professional that has a much higher risk of getting the virus. Both of them overcame the virus and are back to work.

EDIT: My son works from home in a technical field.

Me too, and that happened around December 28 of last year.

crisp clean data.

  • Sample is self-selected
  • Unknown if sample is representative of population

Definitely not crisp or clean.

Strictly speaking it is crisp clean data in the form of digits.

It is not, however, information.

Ignore the poll; the data will be meaningless. Anybody that changes what they think or do on the basis of such digits deserves what they get. Ditto changing what other people do.

I've probably had COVID-19 back at the end of March. I had a cough, then when it subsided, I got COVID toes, a burning rash on the back of my toes, which lasted for around 10 days or so. Unfortunately testing was restricted back then and it's too late for an antibody test, so unless I get a T-cell test, which I gather isn't routinely performed, I'll never know. At the time I didn't think I had it, as it didn't affect my ability to exercise and I thought the rashes were chilblains, as it was still quite cold back then, but I changed my mind, since hearing about COVID toes.
