Adventures In Dumpster Diving 01OCT12
« on: October 03, 2012, 03:29:34 am »
Greetings EEVBees:

--I found an NZXT Whisper Case, brand new, in the dumpster, $139.99 retail. It is a really tall and heavy case with 4 fans and sound deadening. This case is built for gamers and has provisions for water cooling, so it is much more case than I really need for general and photographic use, but it is free. I am building a rather prosaic 2009 vintage Biostar, AMD Semperon combo kit I got from Geeks with 16 GB Ram for pictures, nothing special, but very economical. I also found a brand new 740 Watt LSP Power Supply in the same dumpster, so I added a used 64GB SSD and an ordinary 1 TB spinner, refurbished, for a total system out of pocket of about $220. I notice that by the look of the pictures I will probably have to add resistors to tone down those blue LEDs, we shall see.

--I emailed NZXT to ask them to sell me the fastener and accessory package for the Whisper Case, and believe it or not, they are sending me one gratis. Bonus!

--As soon as I finish replacing all the hoses and the water pump on my 1989 Nissan Truck, I will be back dumpster diving for electronics, repairable, recyclable, and ebayable. I have noticed, you never find the remotes to anything, very irritating.

Dear Pop:

--My speculation is that it was the result of an eviction. The eviction service companies put eveything in the dumpster or on the curb. They keep nothing, to avoid lawsuits. I got a lot of good stuff out of that dumpster that day. I was able to build my brother a decent computer with another case power supply and an old MSI 4GB Ram Motherboard I got in the same load, as per my usual builds I added 64 GB SSD (on sale) and a refurbished 1 TB Disk ($60).

--My brother found a Westinghouse W32701 28" LCD TV (notice how the W32 designation would make you think 32") in the dumpster lately. TV was in very good condition but picture was fried. Nice TV, built like a rock with the Capton Tape Wire Carriers attaching to the bottom of the LCD instead of the top where they always get fried. Once I determined the connections to the LCD were OK, I replaced the T-Con board for $12.00, and, it woiks. $22 for the correct remote and Bobs your uncle.

--I have just about been able to cover the cost of these new acquisitions by flogging the parts for TVs that I have not been able to rescue. I recently got $65 dollars for the stand to a Samsung 32" TV, I got another $60 for the boards, buttons, cables & speakers, and $15 for the used CCFLs. The original cost of the TV was $500, who woodah thunk it. Most of the daily beer drinkers that get recycle this stuff would have gotten 3 to 5 dollars for the metal, go figure.
