Hello.
I own a Sparkfun "bus pirate", the 3.X version, specifically this exact model:
http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/bus-pirateI've owned it for 4 years, and it's been used all but a handful of times, and sealed up in a box for the most part. Last night I was debugging an ESP8266 module by connecting the BP in UART mode to the ESP8266 UART (3.3v, I always measure twice and check) - the next thing I know, is that when I ran the BP "~" self test option (and yes, the jumpers were attached, and yes, in the right places) I had 3 errors, 2 of which are "MISO FAIL" and "CLK FAIL"; I tried this on another PC also, same result.
I've bought the updated 3.6 version from Amazon, to replace it, but what possibly could have damaged it on a 3.3v UART line? I'm always grounded properly too... I don't have SMD stations or reflow equipment, and have little inclination to spend *too* long repairing such a cheap device, but I'm very interested in what on earth may have happened to cause this. Oh, and I've got ZERO damage/shorts/scratches on it, it's pristine. Do they offer any sort of warranty or replacement service?
Polite request: please don't point me to the links I can find in a Google search result when searching for bus pirate faults; this is a request for those of you knowledgeable in this area, I don't need references I can find myself with eyes and a keyboard, thanks.
Thank you.
