Why do quotes screw up when modifying posts and how do I make it stop?

As the title says. I've tried the "Toggle View" button, and that turn the HTML back into BBCode, but the quotes are changed in the process. How do I fix/stop this?
Someone:
Default to the bbcode editor (setting in your profile "Look and Layout"). Swapping between the two with text present is destructive/non-reversed.

or... swap before you add the quote(s) and then use the Insert Quote button on the posts below the editor.
Infraviolet:
On every forum I've ever used I avoid the quote function anyway. Because when someone later tries to read through your thread at a future time because it sounds relevant to their future problem, then they find the whole thing broken up by blocks of repeated quotes, and the whole page far longer to scroll through than needed. Especially bad are cases where someone quotes someone who is already quoting another post...

I tend to prefer noting in my reply post the username or post number of a post I'm replying to, or if I need to quote something just copying and pasting the single phrase or sentence of the original text and showing it "just in normal quote marks".

Sounds like more hassle than its worth, use the quote button and remove excess text/photos if you think its too long.

Exactly. If it's a long post and I'm replying to the entirety of it, I'll replace the text with "...snip...". That way, It's clear as to which reply I'm replying to, but not overwhelmed with text.
