Why don't electrical engineers shave their legs?
« on: June 09, 2010, 08:08:22 pm »
Over the years, I have noticed that most electrical engineers do not shave their legs. (At least that's the case at Texas A&M University.) The few who do are mostly Asians. (I would be in that category.)

My hypothesis is that many electrical engineers care little about how they look. But maybe it has something to do with how most electrical engineers think. What are your thoughts?

BTW, earlier this year, a friend of mine (Susmitha) had to present a project at an electrical engineering fair. Her project is not what I would consider very impressive (just a fluorescent lamp inverter with a calculator solar cell for light level feedback) but she was the only presenter (out of 15 or so) who shaved her legs. Needless to say, she was really popular at the fair and she won first place.

Surely you are considering only the female electrical engineers?

I think he might be taking the piss out of Darkman's "conventional or electron flow" poll.

I went to Texas A&M and I am a little confused by this question.  What gender are we talking about?  I would guess the question is about female engineers.

i keep my legs unshaved so I can detect the accumulation of static electricity on my body.  isn't that a given for all EEs or is it just me?  :P

Dave should put a pole up on this. "If you are a male engineer, do you shave your legs?" Arrgh... just notice the pole after posting  :'(

I've never shaved my legs and I certainly never cared if my project won at an engineering fair; since the criteria never included what I considered most important in engineering - innovation, creativity, and brilliance in implementation. It was always - can you make something that somebody else has made work already work too within this time frame, so that you might prove your worthiness to be a productive rat in the maze. The guy who found fire and showed the world how to use it was surely burned at the stake for being different and possessing powers "irrespective" of man.

Shaved, hairy, or whatever the case may be, engineering is not determined by the accomplishments of others but your own. Jack Kilby worked alone in Texas Instruments' lab in 1957 when he invented the integrated circuit. He also failed the entrance exam to MIT. He then went on to head up the team that developed the first hand held calculator at TI.

So shave if you must win the fair, but believe me the real reward will be granted by yourself.

I guess since the male Aggie EE doesn't shave his legs than the typical Aggie would.  I always knew most of you were fruits.

At TAMU, I have seen percentages range from about 5% (ECEN350 computer architecture) to 25% (ECEN 314 signals and systems). This poll is currently at 7.2% (since waxing, etc. essentially does the same as shaving), but the sample size is too small to make any real conclusions. Well, except that the percentage is much lower than that of the education majors where the percentage is over 90%.

Engineers don't shave because they're the manliest group of men. They're handy with tools and can fix pretty much anything.  ;D

I don't shave my beard/moustache enough (only when it really gets long - don't like to eat 2 times the same things on one day ) I doubt if i would ever get around shaving my legs :)
Real Circuit design time in minutes= (2 + Nscopes) Testim + (40 +120 Kbrewski) Nfriends

Testim = estimated time in minutes Nscopes= number of oscilloscopes present Kbrewski = linear approx of the nonlinear beer effect Nfriends = number of circuit design friends present

No, I'd look utterly weird with shiny smooth legs. Chest maybe. And, er, somewhere else, but lets not go there unless you are blonde and gorgeous.

The EE's who are racing cyclists always shave their legs.   As do all racing cyclists male or female.

regards,

I noticed that at Texas A&M, a very large percentage of "regular" cyclists shave their legs, but I think it's more for appearance than aerodynamics. The ones who do seem to be proud to show it off.

Maybe in France, but definitely not in most parts of America. Just look at the models...

Those guys aren't as proud as me. ;)

Male models??? I really don't know. I never really look at other guys. Most photos are enhanced with photoshop to smooth everything out. Most likely the leg hairs got blurred out during the process. Also, it's the photographers take. If he likes his men, nice and clean. They do it to get paid.
