This is a fairly old topic, but recently (end of July), the University of California Santa Barbara started suing major retailers for patent violation on their filament style bulbs: https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/31/business/light-bulb-lawsuit-amazon/index.html

In all fairness, in the almost two years since this thread was started, filament LED bulbs have become extremely common. You can find them at IKEA, wal-mart, and any grocery store, sold by big name lighting vendors like Philips and Osram. The only reason anyone would be unfamiliar with them is if they haven’t had to buy a light bulb in the past year (which, admittedly, is a lot of people, especially if they already bought LED bulbs a few years ago, and thus have no need for replacements yet.)

It's been years since I've actually needed to buy a lightbulb, although I buy them occasionally to play with when I see an interesting new type on the shelves. At this point I've replaced several bulbs not because they failed but because they were technologically obsolete and a new one offered better efficiency or other desired characteristics.
