Why is 74LS47 BCD Decoder painfully expensive?
« on: May 14, 2018, 01:08:49 pm »
Well it still lower than 1 USD / piece but for bulk purchase it still expensive

I don't understand why is 74LS47 BCD Decoder painfully expensive?
It just some logic gate stick together, but why it is more expensive than regular Op-amp?

Low volume, ancient technology = High price.
I am available for freelance work.

Probably because no one really buys them anymore, and they don't make much sense for new designs.

So 7-segment is dying?
(I never really use it so I don't know  :-\)

$1.5 in single unit quantities does not strike me as particularly expensive; the 7447 and 74LS47 were always relatively expensive.

The less expensive CMOS 4511 can be used if you do not require ripple blanking.

A modern design would replace it with a microcontroller at 1/3rd the price or more likely drive 4 to 8 multiplexed digits with a single microcontroller for 1/2 the price of a 74LS47.

So 7-segment is dying?

7-segment displays are not going anywhere.  There are just less expensive and more integrated ways to drive them now.

The '4511 is for driving common cathode displays, whist the '7447 was for common anode.

I agree, if this is a new design, use a microcontroller and get rid of many other pointless ICs.
