WikiLeaks - 250,000 US Embassy Diplomatic Cables
« on: December 01, 2010, 10:12:18 pm »
Hi all,

I know this isn't related to electronics at all but what are peoples opinions on the latest leaked documents? I think it's brilliant that people are getting these out into the open...it certainly makes very interesting reading!

I too think it's a good thing. We need to know what are governments are doing and to whom.

I think it's frigg'n brilliant. I love Wikileaks.

Cringely has an opinion on it:

The answers to those questions are always obvious!
But it's always good to have proof though. But even with proof they still get away with murder.
Then they retire in luxury on their fat pensions.

I'm in the wrong business...

As a US citizen, I ....

1- Don't care
2- Haven't heard anything surprising

and most significantly...

3- Have absolutely no doubt that the US government is using wikileaks to their perceived advantage.
I'm either at my bench, here, or on PokerStars.

Its intended target was never really the US in the first place.  If anything its helped by exposing the push by Saudi Arabia for the US to be aggressive with Iran.

In fact, at the end of the blog Cringely makes good points about the US allowing it to happen in the first place.

as a citizen... no matter which country, i think i should. our government are more and more getting on top of our head skinning every bit of our money (tax), i should know this and opt for different goverment in the future election. governing is becoming a business, not responsibility.

I'm not saying I don't care what the government does. I'm saying I don't care that some putz leaked a raft of bureaucratic BS.

Yup, a proverbial storm in a teacup.
The hype surrounding it seems to be the actual problem, not the actual content, it's almost self perpetuating. Reading them is indeed a yawn fest.
The Australian PM just came out yesterday denouncing it and saying it's illegal etc. I wish she would just STFU!
More US arse licking.

Here's something amusing related to the subject. Everyone is jumping on board:

I agree it makes interesting reading...there's just too many documents.

Mirrors can still be found here on European sites:  http://wikileaks.info/
The cables can be found as bit torrents: http://www.utorrent.com/

3- Have absolutely no doubt that the US government is using wikileaks to their perceived advantage.

That is the very nature of the politician: to do use *all* information, favourable and unfavourable, to their advantage in order to promote whatever cause they might have signed up for. (In this case, to regulate the internet, to extend the definition of terrorist, to initiate military campaigns, etc.).

That we *know* politicians are corrupt does not make it so. *Evidence* makes it so. And even the politician cannot dodge evidence for too long without suffering consequences. The politician navigates and circumvents the law and rumors in much the same way as hackers do with networks and code.

When a headline catches the imagination of the public, the politician soon enters the room to calm the children down and to tell them what to make about it all, like a teacher or a parent figure. When the teachers and parents continually fail you, is it not time to become your own teacher and parent?

They just are out for themselves now.  In the UK and America the party system seems to give the illusion of choice but the real power is elsewhere.

Lots of arse lickers in the UK political arena with nice fat fees for speaking etc at corporate level.

They are trying to demonize Assange.  He did not take the data just publishing it like the press so is a journalist a radical one but that is what he is.  To parot the system if you have nothing to hide why should you not be exposed ? if you get my drift. Privacy for a few but not for us.
