Will this Power Charger Work with Camera?
(1/1)
Boris_yo:
Hello,

The camera consumes 220 mAh and requires 1A - 2A 5V power source.

Will it be compatible with LG smartphone charger? It's 5.1V, 0.7A.

Thanks
magic:
The camera consumes 220mA, because mAh is a unit of charge rather than current.
The number itself is consistent with 90 hours run time on a 20Ah power bank so probably correct.

Unless it draws some large peaks in excess of 700mA, and I doubt that it does, it will run on this charger.

5.1V is within the 4.75~5.25V range which is allowed on USB ports, so the camera should take it. You may want to check if no load voltage doesn't significantly exceed the rating or if there isn't serious ripple. But it looks like a switcher and not some no-name one so hopefully OK.
Boris_yo:
@magic Thanks. So if I connect it to LG charger with 0.7A and hypothetically camera draws 800mA what will happen? What will happen if camera draws 1000mA?
SeanB:
In most cases the current ratings of a name brand charger can be exceeded for short periods without harm, and for a camera the current peaks are for a few seconds to charge for electric flash, and then the power draw is typically very low, with the odd peaks when taking images or writing to flash memory. This one draws 220mA, so likely will run on the LG charger no problem.

The problem comes with no name knock off chargers, which often are unable to meet the specified power draw for more than a second or two, if they can actually meet them at all. Basically if the case is incredibly small for the ratings, or it runs hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold for more than 10 seconds, it is being overdriven, and will fail in short order, plus it is not likely to meet any sort of standards approval regarding insulation stand off voltage, creepage and clearance internally, and is likely using sub standard components being operated at or beyond the maximum rating, so giving a short life before they fail, and then you hope the failure is not going to destroy the equipment plugged in to it, or injure the user.
