What category does 555 count?
« on: November 13, 2015, 11:34:03 am »
I have 4 boxes for THT components:

  • Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors and Connectors
  • Diodes, Transistors, Thrysitors and Heatsinks
  • Analog and Mixed-signal Integrated Circuits (excl. anything that have a CPU inside) and Relays
  • Digital Integrated Circuits, mixed-signal MCU, MPU and SoC.

I place ICL7135, ADC0832 and MCP41010 in Analog & Mixed Signal box, but ATmega328P and ATtiny85 in Digital box. Now where should 555 go? (Currently they are in the "analog & mixed-signal IC" box)

Hi,

It doen't matter which box you put it in.
As long as you can find it the next time you need a 555 timer.

Now where should 555 go?

There's a big category called "Linear ICs"

I quote from google
"A linear integrated circuit (linear IC) is a solid-state analog device characterized by a theoretically infinite number of possible operating states. It operates over a continuous range of input levels. In contrast, a digital IC has a finite number of discrete input and output states."

555 is in its own category "triplefives" and deserves its own handmade wooden cabinet with silk lining.

Or you can put them with any other chips. :-) Sounds like your current choice is fine.

Perfect answer.

Digikey says "clock and timing" and I'd be inclined to agree.

Though I'd consider non clock/timing/pulse stretcher projects more interesting, due to their creative use of the 555. I.e.

If you want to keep your current categorization, I would also put it into analog chips.

After all, the 555 functions as a timer by the use of analog circuits (R-C circuit), over maybe a digital timer that uses an oscillator/clock and digital counter.

You should have more than 4 boxes.  64 is the starting point.  I have 6 of these.

I have LOTS of Zip-locks inside those 4 boxes.

I have LOTS of Zip-locks inside those 4 boxes.

In addition to the 64 slot shelving units, I also have Sterelite latching modular stackable boxes (http://www.walmart.com/ip/44785779) where the stuff inside them is sometimes organized by zip-lock baggies.  Problem is, parts organized that way are hard to find.  It's a frigging sequential search every time.  Putting no more than 2-8 parts in each of the small drawers makes stuff a lot easier to find.  Mostly I use the Sterilite boxes for larger parts.

This is how I use the stackable boxes using 4 of the available sizes that stack up really nicely.
