Windows File Explorer Thumbnail/Preview Broken
« on: April 06, 2019, 01:40:35 am »
I'm no table to see photo images in thumbnails nor the preview. I just see the PS icon (PhotoShop). If I scroll through the list, the image appears briefly, but gets refreshed with the silly icon. Preview pane stays blank when selecting a file.

I've toggled the File Explorer icon and such settings off and on and no change.

Any ideas?

Windows 95?
Windows 10?
This makes a difference! In any case, either the thumbnail cache is corrupt or a setting is wrong. Try the tips at https://neosmart.net/wiki/clear-thumbnails-cache/ . You might also try clearing/rebuilding iconcache.db .

It's Windows 10, but it seemed to fix itself.

I have 20GB free space and Windows still complains at every boot and wake that there is not enough room to install updates. I think that is a good thing.  :-+

Oh Noes! I uninstalled something and just got a message the Windows is ready to install updates. I am totally  :scared:

Buckle up  :-BROKE

Where's the files? I want to mess with it, delete them or change the folder name so MS can't find it, and won't have room to do it again.

They took 10GB of my free space for their silly update, that I don't want or need...

Do you ever run disk cleanup? If you clean up system files it gives you the option to remove all the old update files, which gives you your space back.
This is not new for Windows 10. It's been around since Windows 7 at least.

Uninstalling can trigger Windows to reinstall the missing item. It may call it an update at that point.

I was at 2GB for a long while, ran disc clean-up often, but C drive is mostly just for the OS, and a few games I installed when I set up this PC, for the SSD speed, yo! After the 1805 or whatever fiasco, I was happy to leave MS updates in a lurch without enough room. I installed another SW a few weeks ago and free space went to 500MB.

I uninstalled the games because I thought the low disk space might be the problem with the tumbnails and preview pane failure, perhaps something about a swap file (which I think TRIM settings would have that on my secondary drive, but I lost tough with the PhD requirements of maintaining a Windows environment), and I never really played the games anyway. That gave me 20GB of free space, but did not resolve the thumbs/preview problem, and I was happy MS was still complaining it did not have enough room for updates.

Now I think Windows does not have good situational awareness and its primary focus is finding ways to exploit its users. Looks like it took it a couple weeks to notice the free space, or maybe that's how long it took it to download the update, all the while still complaining. What a bitch - needs a divorcing...

Available space can vary as old updates are kept for a while to allow rolling them back. People often don't understand this process and misinterpret what they see. Try running sfc /scannow in a command window to attempt fixing your thumbnails.
