Hook up wire flexibility rating/keyword
« on: August 25, 2020, 11:28:25 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking to order few 100m of awg22 silicone hook-up wire from china (alibaba) but i don't want to get that ultra ultra flexible stuff.
I think you will know the kind i mean. You pickup a length of it and it flops down in a sharp 90deg bend right at the end of you finger.

Is there a name or rating for wire flexibility types that i can ask about to reduce the chance i will get the wrong type of wire?

Thanks.

na, i don't want rigid wire. definitely want stranded.

Just not that ultra floppy silicon type you sometimes see.

Maybe its down to the number of strands?

Try some of the silicon wire from hobbyking  - available by the meter in various AWG and colours this may help with making a decision

Ultra flexible stuff will have a high number of ultra fine strands, 100s of fine wires. Likely thinner silicone insulation (0.010" vs 0.030")

Maybe check for a specific UL identifier? If I recall correctly, pretty standard hookup wire is usually UL1007.

Go for 7 strands if you don’t want it too floppy.

Yeah, i've been collecting more info on this.

For AWG24 at least, it looks like ~11 strands is your typical stuff and ~40 is the ultra floppy stuff.

There's lots of alibaba sellers for silicone ~40 strand awg24 wire but the ~11 stuff is less common.

I used to buy it from digikey, but at NZ$80 for 150m i cant really justify that when silicone wire is ~NZ$50 for 400m on alibaba
