Title: Wireless car phone charger with cooling?
Post by: Pack34 on May 28, 2016, 01:44:56 pm
To extend the life of my phone I switched over to wireless charging after the USB died after two years. Everything has been fine until I've been doing some long distance driving in my car. What appears to be happening is that the wireless charging can produce a lot of heat and this is shutting down the charging circuit in the phone. To be sure that my phone doesn't die I've found myself having to take the phone out of the mount, cool it off with the AC vent and then put it back in.

It's not terribly inconvenient, but it should be unnecessary. Unfortunately, I'm having issues finding an off-the-shelf solution. I was able to find an article from a year ago about Chevy putting built-in systems in some of their 2016 models.

I'm debating on modifying an existing mount to add a TEC and thermistor setup to cool the charger.

Has anyone here had a similar issue and found a COTS solution, or modified something like this before? This isn't something electrically hard to do, just doubting my ability to make it neat enough to not look like a suspicious package on my dashboard.

The Chevvy solution is probably just an extra vent from the existing A/C system.
TECs for cooling suck, unless their hot side has a large thermal sink to dump waste heat into with minimal Rth_amb.  Good luck building that in a dash-friendly package! Your cheapest/best option is probably to get the phone's USB repaired so you can charge by wire.
