| Wireless communication on 60GHz with throughput 1Gbit/s (WiGig) |

Andreas Spiess posted a new video on a wireless technology called WiGig. This technology works in 60Ghz and can achieve a link up to 1.5KM, open-sight, and speed up to 1Gbit/s, with ideal weather. He made an interesting experiment showing the effect of having rainy weather and miss alligned angle between the two points. He compared it with Wi-Fi and explained why it is different than the 2.4Ghz with an interesting history about the wireless frequencies. What do you think about WiGig? Can it be a robust replacement for Ethernet in some cases? |

AFAIK, WiGig is primarily meant to be used as short range (in your apartment or office) high throughput WiFi. Microwave PtP links with Gbit/s throughput are nothing new, we had them already 20 years ago. Typically you would get a licence for a dedicated frequency (instead of a shared ISM band) and run your microwave link over several km. A common application is the backhaul connection for celluar base stations, especially in rural areas without glass fiber. BTW, the terminology for 'open-sight' is line-of-sight (LOS), and the opposite is non-line-of-sight (NLOS). |

Reminds of the early fights within the IEEE of the Ultra Wideband folks, some (Motorola) were on the Impluse Radio side and some (intel) were on the OFDM side. We are approached by Alereon (Tx) to investigate a Log Domain Filter in SiGe BiCMOS to be utilized in Ultra Wideband chip sets being developed, later moving to the 60GHz band. They had a large screen HDTV in their entrance being feed by an early Blue Ray DVD player wirelessly, impressive demo back then!! Think Alereon later were suppliers of the 60GHz chips sets utilized by Linksys. Best, |

Nothing special when you can buy this sorta stuff off the shelf from Ubiquiti. 60 GHz suffers massive range penalties and 1 Gbit is nothing to get excited about. https://store.ui.com/us/en?category=all-60ghz-wireless Whereas we have a 11 GHz dish installed solar and wind powered for ISP backhaul over just 10km when it's capable 1.2 Gbit and 300km.
