Woo Woo Remote Scanning Technology
« on: July 17, 2012, 11:09:06 pm »
Within the next year or two, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will instantly know everything about your body, clothes, and luggage with a new laser-based molecular scanner fired from 164 feet (50 meters) away. From traces of drugs or gun powder on your clothes to what you had for breakfast to the adrenaline level in your body -- agents will be able to get any information they want without even touching you.

We're at a unique time in the history of surveillance: the cameras are everywhere, and we can still see them. Fifteen years ago, they weren't everywhere.

So

IF this is real technology, isn't then the real problem then wading through this flood of data to find what you really want? Even if you're specific about looking for "traces of drugs or gunpowder on your clothes," even if you can handle the data volume, at some point you're going to hit a "sorting problem."

i am putting this in woo woo  dept

Good luck with that. You'll be picking up every pot head and gun toting Yank who didn't wash since they came from the firing range or shooting beer cans  ;D

"It fires a laser to provide molecular-level feedback at distances of up to 50 meters in just picoseconds."

LOL, the laser won't even have hit its target yet in that time frame.  The positive side of this is that we will finally have Star Trek tricorders.

Sounds like Raman scattering.
The difficult we do today; the impossible takes a little longer.

Its not just shooter who will be picked up if it is looking for nitrate's, Nail varnish, Card players, Painters and Farmers will also get detected, truth is there is so much nitro out there these sniffers become useless on their own.
On the other hand is this just a divining rod with lasers.

That's not very exciting, a standard smartphone has the same capabilities.  However, he says: "My research projects involve adaptive spectral imaging as well as rapid prototyping for terahertz optics."  So his next version might actually be useful.
