Hello everyone!
I know that this thread should appear on the ‘looking for work’ forum, but I thought I can at least get some advises from some more experienced people in the blog’s community (especially those who are from Australia).
My name is Eshel, freshly graduate EE, with two years of experience in a start-up company. I am currently travelling in south east Asia. Anyhow, I was thinking of make big part my upcoming trip through Australia more interesting by looking for a contract job (short term) in any cool company that deals with technology. It doesn’t necessarily have to be pure engineer work, but hopefully something I can gain relevant experience. :scared:

- I have placed my resume on SEEK, is there any other place where I should post such a post as well? (don’t have linkedin)
- General Do’s and Don’ts, regarding looking for a contractor job?
- Does anyone from this great community might be able to give me concrete advises regarding might be needing assistance?
I will love to have any piece of advice, and please contact me directly for detailed information regarding my CV. Thank you all in advanced!

Australia is not a "target rich environment" for electronics jobs. Part of our workplace has a call centre and it saddens me to see people with Masters in Engineering answering phones.
Having said that, Seek and Career One are probably the way to go, word of mouth beats them hands down though. The trick is getting through the employer firewall to get someone to look at you. Luckily I've had to have little experience in this area, so my advice is by observation only.

Its a bit hard to get work as a foreigner in electronics here. Maybe for short term contract with one of these visas...

Most working holiday people have a terrific experience in Australia. In the cities, you usually can can some work. If I were you I would check up a few places. Also check Australia Wide and see if they have any short term contract jobs. You can extend the 12 month visa by working on a farm as a labourer, but some unscrupulous farmers know this and will pay you peanuts, whilst others are fair and reasonable providing board as well. A French couple I knew were paid one cent per strawberry plant they planted for one crook, but earned $25 per hour milking cows for a decent and honest farmer. They bought a van for $3K, drove around Australia working, and sold the van for $3K, and except for the great strawberry ripoff, they had a ball. It is unlikely engineering companies will rip people off. They are generally run by people of good moral standing (but not always). Whatever you do, stay away from working for a contract labour agents in the meat and farm industries.

If you don't have a work visa then it's illegal to hire you, and no one will take that risk.
Travel visa's are different to work visa's.
