Metric Rack Mount Screws
« on: November 03, 2016, 10:30:49 pm »
You would think I would know the answer to this, but I don't...
We had to move our repeater system from our supplied rack cabinet to the equipment bay of our host...
Thankfully there were plenty of screws already in the rails for us tp use.

However I need to know since I didn't bring my screw gage with me...
What is the size and thread pitch of metric rack mounting screws ???

M5 or M6 (easy to measure - M6 is almost 1/4", M5 is noticably less), standard (coarse) pitch (0.8mm or 1mm respectively).

I've intentionally never used anything except M6, even in the states.

What that site is babbling about 0.1mm for I have no idea.

M6 refers to a metric 6mm screw. The outside diameter of the threads is 6mm. The standard metric rack screw is actually an M6 x 0.1mm. The number “0.1mm” refers to 0.1 threads per millimeter.
that's a pure nonsense - that would mean 1 turn per 10mm :-DD that's too steep even for child toys :D

the correct marking is M6 x 1mm

Correct.  Whilst Imperial thread sizes use TPI (threads per inch), metric sizes DO NOT use threads per XXX, but the thread pitch (distance between threads).  It can get confusing sometimes!

Yes, normally a M6x1mm thread machine screw with pan head, with a screw length of typically 20mm, covers pretty much all rack mounting equipment. and will fit the captive nuts perfectly.

Of course with old racks made up from reused parts from other racks you will find the odd cage nut that is a US size, and I normally fix those by replacing the nut with a metric one, or if I have none left run a M6 tap through the nut to make a somewhat skanky M6 thread for the screw. I do have a small assortment of imperial taps and dies, but those are generally not used much, unless I am making a bespoke hole for a thread I will also make, and the size is right for them, or for some US made equipment that uses them, though there I also have a few recoil sets ( bought cheap as well, as 30 year old stock off the dusty shelf) to handle the common sizes.
