Repeat after me: cell phones don’t cause brain cancer
« on: February 23, 2011, 12:01:32 pm »
In the words of dave

'you gotta be shittin' me'

So today I got rudely awoken by drill going through a 11kv cable under the road but that has nothing to do with this.

My gf calls up on the work phone and not her mobile phone because she seen once again junk science in the sun paper (yer she dose know better) that radio waves are causing cancer again despite another news paper today saying it different.

bloody buggering journalist who have no right to comment on these matters mainly because they lack the skills and critical thinking in this field.

Anyway I thought you guys might like this

The average person is stupid. Just look at all the diet fads that people get into (my pet favourite is "liver cleansing").

Extreme use of mobile phones might cause a slight increase in the rate of some cancers (and even this is likely to be due to the heating effect not due to radiation damage) but nothing but correlative studies has shown this*. Correlative studies are almost worthless as most scientists are not statisticians and so make huge errors in their conclusions about the validity of the data.

* And even if this was so you are far more likely to die from skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer etc all related to avoidable lifestyle risks. People need to realise that if you don't die to accident or infectious disease cancer will get you in the end.

Haha, glorious University of Manchester. My type of guy  ;)

An individual MIGHT be smart, the mob is ALWAYS stupid. Collective stupidity. The first, but not underlying, princple of marketing.

Real Circuit design time in minutes= (2 + Nscopes) Testim + (40 +120 Kbrewski) Nfriends

Testim = estimated time in minutes Nscopes= number of oscilloscopes present Kbrewski = linear approx of the nonlinear beer effect Nfriends = number of circuit design friends present

Very good share, Thanks!

Is it me, or does it seem that women, more than men, seem to fall for this "junk science" stuff?

Here is a cartoon on this subject that I turned into a gif file:

Also, in his slide on things to/not worry about, I personally disagree with the Global Warming as a worry!

I agree a lot of bogus stuff out there.  But RF into the head can never be a good thing.  Jury is still out on long term effects.

If you know electromagnetics and some basic chemistry/biology its simple to understand its harmless.

possible how this story happerened

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/feb/23/churnalism-pr-media-trust?INTCMP=SRCH

agreed but at such levels at varying frequency for mobile-phones at least its junk science.

anyway check the link above its about how press release are just taken on value and copy and pasted leading to the gradian (uk news paper have some fun)

i fancy a story about magic baked beans and a Garry the giraffe  that plays table tennis.

seriously though it quite funny :D

They also believed the world was flat and electrons flowed positive to negative at one point.

Professor Christopher Davies collapsed last week at the Jim Fix memorial dinner. Suspected brain tumor.

No one who lived near the ocean has believed the world was flat in the last several thousand years. If you have boats you quickly realise what a horizon is and then can surmise that the world must be curved (and probably spherical). RF technicians who work in fields thousands of times stronger than that given out by mobile phones aren't dropping dead from cancer, animal studies don't show anything but the well known heating effects.

The effects of cancer caused by the sun, food preservatives, car exhaust, plasticiser fumes, oral sex etc are well known and so many orders of magnitude more apparent then any correlation so far found between mobile phone use and cancer. Also with the way things are going you are more likely to die of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the near future then any form of cancer.

Pure water kills cell lines, quick we need to stop people drinking water!. Exposing cell lines for 24 hours is in no way similar to actual cell phone RF exposire. That is going to kill cells through heating effects just like putting them in a microwave would.

Most observed effects in animal models and cell lines aren't existence in actual human studies.

I'd say the science of it is pretty well pinned down and has evolved much further in understanding since that point.  Its the people who don't understand the science who are injecting unwarranted and unqualified opinions into society that are creating this kind of paranoia.

This is your ignorance of history showing, not the ignorance of early scientists.

and electrons flowed positive to negative at one point.
You have to choose something if you have no way of measuring it, sometimes they're lucky (eg. R/S system for stereoisomers) and sometimes they're wrong (current flow vs. electron flow in metals).

Rat brain:
How does the rat brain look if you put the rat in water for 24h? What does this say about the risk of coming into contact with water? Dosage (concentration and exposure duration) is everything in toxicology, every substance known to man is harmful in some quantities (see above water example), and harmless in some other quantities (think homeopathic medicines ;)).

Yes the low level RF signal from a phone has no chance of causing cancer.

Oral sex causes cancer? Sounds like nonsense too. Of cause it causes sexually transmitted diseases which probably increase the risk of cancer. There's probably also another study suggesting couples who have sex more are at lower risk of developing cancer.

In this instance I'd rather accept that I'm ignorant and wish to stay that way - a long day constantly on the mobile sure doesn't make my head feel good and I'll use THAT as my science, whatever truth is in it.

I think being on the phone (mobile or not) all day would give me a headache.

I think the greatest health risks are repetitive strain injury and hearing damage if the volume is too high.

take cell phone use has exploded worldwide, with hundreds of millions of users.
Yet the rate of brain cancer detection has been steady for years.
If there were even a tiny connection, we’d see a dramatic increase in brain disease.
yet we don’t

Exactly, there's no risk of oral sex causing cancer if both parties are clean and don't cheat on each other. The original blanket statement was total nonsense: it's not oral sex which causes cancer but diseases contracted from doing it with infected people and the same is true for any other sexual practise. Saying oral sex causes cancer is like saying kissing causes glandular fever or the common cold.
