good luck with that. The thing is most of those mail scam start by asking for money, part of me falling for this is cause he didn't ask for money right away ! a reason why i took it seriously !
An other thing to add to all those cliche about china , crap component , crap product, spam spam spam spam , and now web domain scam.  |O

I am getting these e-mails every month or so, even though I am not even the contact person for our company. It is just a scattershot spam from scammers trying to sell useless services.

You deal and communicate directly with your registrar when it comes to your domain. Everyone else is irrelevant.

Is this a scam, or just clever marketing?

Suppose I have a domain "bluesky.com" and it is successful and I'm making lots of money.  Somebody notices and sees that ".com " is the only top domain I have registered so they register bluesky.info, bluesky.org, bluesky.ca,  bluesky.us, etc and siphon off some of my customers.  Perhaps they even offer to sell me these domains for a lot of money (extortion).

Now somebody else sees that I haven't registered bluesky.cn so being a little more ethical they offer to register it for me for a modest amount of money.  In effect they are selling me a service at a reasonable price so I wouldn't call that a scam as much as a marketing ploy.

Not everyone in the world, even in China, is evil and trying to steal your money.

However I would be skeptical in this case.

You deal and communicate directly with your registrar when it comes to your domain. Everyone else is irrelevant.

Actually the scam is more along the lines - "Company XY is claiming a domain Foo.cn in China and we have found that it matches the name of your company/product Bar. Please confirm that the company XY is your legitimate partner in China ..." with the idea being that someone is trying to cybersquat on your domain and infringe your trademarks ("everybody knows how copycat counterfeit crap comes from China, right?!"). If you reply, then the pitches for the "protection services" come.

So it rarely has anything to do with your normal web domain, unless you are actually in China.

East Registry is a Chinese company doing .CN TLD registration, but it has no affiliation with Chinese government (specifically, ministry of industry and information technology).
Bull.  Everything in China is controlled by the government.
The day Al Gore was born there were 7,000 polar bears on Earth.
Today, only 26,000 remain.
