To you, diversity of opinions means that others wholesale agree with your opinions. You tolerate all views, as long as they are the same as yours. You take any attacks on your views as an attack on you.

I don't think you understand what an ad-hominem is. Instead of addressing the argument, you tried to discredit me by claiming my position is based on some kind of guilt. Such arguments are automatically invalid because they do not address the point being made.

There's also the issue with "ad hominem" of confusing the ad hominem logical fallacy with the simple act of insulting someone.

If I say, "You're an unqualified idiot, therefore your opinions on climate change are wrong," then I have committed an ad hominem fallacy.

If I say, "You're an unqualified idiot, and also your opinions on climate change are wrong for X, Y, and Z reasons, and you have a stupid face," then I'm just being rude. It's not an ad hom.

I generally find it totally acceptable to attack the message -> aka "your opinions on climate change are wrong".

Unfortunately, many people don't hold that view.

And off course the "offline" talks never happen, or you can't convey the whole thing or they get ignored because there is no action item in the meeting notes about it.

I've been in Japan many times and they do look at your chest while talking to you and they point to their nose to refer to themselves. The funny thing is that my boss (female) will talk to them and they will respond to me instead of her. Another thing that is weird is that they wait until you are almost at the door to say goodbye, it always seems like they are telling you that you forgot something.

The whole I'm exposing my neck to you is a bit obsolete, it's not like we carry swords anymore.

I'm not familiar with China at all, but since most of the Japanese culture comes from mainland China I would think it's at least similar at least on the old traditions.

I do like Japan a lot, it remind me of Spain, where it wouldn't be unusual to see people drinking beer at breakfast time. Tech guys work overtime and everyone punches timecards to get in and out. But unlike us, they do get paid for overtime, we are salaried. The bus stop like smoke break rooms within the building are weird. I mean they had designated smoke areas but it was all in the same nave.

Computer programmer workers will work in a common bench column, everyone looking busy regardless if they were working or not becuase at the end of that column will be a desk with their supervisor foreseeing them.
At the end of the row of supervisors you'll see another desk of the supervisor's supervisor looking at them, and at the end of that super-supervisor column the boss of them all will be watching.

Very industrial organization, 30 minutes lunch break, exercises at the desk, but this was over a decade ago, maybe things have changed now.

Cars abandoned on the side of the road because you can't drive them legally after a few years? (maybe 10 years but I don't recall)

No real nightlife unless you are in Tokyo in the Roppongi area, and forget about finding a taxi late at night unless you are in the nightclub district. Other cities would be totally quiet at night, not a single place open, or just a few bars opened, they did like that I could sing Spanish Karaoke though.

Edit: Although I hear they have a good Brazilian immigration influx, that might help lighten up a bit.

In any event none of this has to do with the Wung Hung Lo topic, sure probably Japan is a derivation of China's culture but it's not the same anymore by a long shot. Although by looking at the young Chinese tourists all around the world, it seems they are getting to Japan's level quick!

I'd be very surprised. Aside from being illegal there is a booming trade in selling used cars into overseas markets, so the owner would be throwing away a lot of money. Most people buy cars on some kind of finance or lease now anyway, so it goes back to the dealer.

Oh yes, there was a booming trade to the UK, what with Jap cars being RHD and the Japanese culture against buying things second hand. Some brilliant Jap cars were available as second hand right off the boat in Liverpool, UK. Like Nissan Skyline GTR's, Subaru Impreza, Mitsi EVO at one end of the scale to the tiny Suzuki Cappuccino and Honda Beat at the cuter end of the scale (for the GF of course ), being unique and quite cheap.

Very easy to modify them to UK MOT standards and register them at the time. They would be sold by auction the same day they came off the ship.

One small Liverpool firm that specialised in importing and making compliant the Jap cars had to drop it in recent years and now focuses on the boring side of just regular garage cheap MOT's (the kind where the tester will always find an advisory fault that needs fixing IYSWIM). I don't know if this change of a once profitable business was because of the recession, some EU diktat, something going wrong in Japan, or just fashion?
