After all the recent price fixing and supply problems in the passive components market, I'll be surprised and a bit worried if that goes through...

This is not good news. I kind of doubt it will not go through at this point. "It has been approved by the boards of both companies"

Suspect Yageo has been enjoying that for a while, and equipped with big bunch of cash, that this is the primary reason for this move ?

Well that's what you get with governments that report to the rich.

It has been approved by the boards of both companies and is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Hopefully the Chinese government will block it again like they did with NXP and Qualcomm.

Yageo is Taiwanese company, and Kemet is American, how Chinese gov. can do anything with that ?

Same as with NXP. You have two choices - comply or GTFO of the Chinese market.

Not overly concerned. In the free world, competition will step in if the price goes up, like what Samsung did with high-end MLCC caps.
Besides, I like Yageo resistors. Good quality, and never had problems with them.

Kemet certainly is not a rival to Yageo.
Kemet has no interest in cheap consumer market, and Kemet doesn't even make parts smaller than 0402.
Kemet makes high end, innovative parts for medical, industrial, automotive and aerospace customers.

OTOH, Kemet has kinda outdated equipment, not nearly competitive to Asian companies. But their management is good, and workmanship is good.

Besides, unlike Yageo being a component company, Kemet is really a material company.
