Dumpster diving.
« on: October 29, 2013, 08:00:35 am »
Given you get permission can anyone suggest a good source of high current low voltage linear transformers, typically  under 24 volts or less.

I was wandering could there be a redundant dead product i've missed. Ok i know most modern gear thrown out containing its power unit is smp, but just wandering if there's some dead product i might have over looked. I have a good selection of industrial estates locally , as a regular face up there in my local town permissions should be easy. Any product  suggested appreciated.  :)

Try the "disco" lighting fixtures, they have these 24V 200W+ halogen lamps that only burn 50 Hours and they all are being replaced with led based lighting.
The few I opened had a huge 24V 250W transformer built in, however usually not the best quality, but they work.

decommissioned halogen lighting systems. I have some 12 VAC 400VA+ transformers pulled out of those.

I love the smell of FR4 in the morning!

Define high current?  We talking 5 amps or 500?

Rewind some microwave oven transformers?

Thanks for the tips so far, some ideas leads to follow up there  :-+ "define high current" ok normally above 10 amps minimum and up to say 50 amps some times more, for use of linear HF Amplifiers and related radio gear.

Yes i've got a MOT ready for winding, although constantly reminded how inefficient its going to be, but i'l try it at the very least, its really tight on winding space to increase the primary for efficiency.
But thanks for the ideas, any others welcomed and appreciated, i don't mind admitting enjoying scavenging, even getting a buzz out of it, legal of course.  ;)

Since microwave oven transformers can be found for free, use them in pairs so the primary sees half voltage. Efficiency should then be pretty good.
