In Germany, ABS is "Antiblockiersystem", i would translate that to Anti Blocking System, even keeping the abbreviation. So ABS Brakes might have slipped in with translations.

You could be right. Anti-lock braking system for cars was invented in Germany. So, the ABS abbreviation may have been imported and English words to match established.
