Some of it still works. Some videos still play, but most, I agree don't seem to be working.
Recent information about it:
https://www.kjrh.com/news/national/do-not-panic-but-youtube-is-suffering-an-outage (https://www.kjrh.com/news/national/do-not-panic-but-youtube-is-suffering-an-outage)
According to the Down Detector, the outage is being felt by coast-to-coast by thousands of users.
The reports started coming in of YouTube's outage around 9:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
There is no word on when YouTube service will be restored.

don't lie, who thought alien invasion or nuclear war?
-
E.g. this works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOCrG0mOMW4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOCrG0mOMW4)
EDIT: Correction, it did work!
It now says server error 500...
-
I was working on a few things server side here and noted that embeds stopped working... thought it was my changes and reverted, but it wasn't my fault. :phew:
-
don't lie, who thought alien invasion or nuclear war?
I doubt it.
They probably changed the code or something, and accidentally introduced a mistake. Which has stopped much/all of youtube, from working properly.
-
i wonder if they restart it, is it like jurassic park?
-
It appears to be fairly global in scope and has continued for a good 25 minutes by now.
Brian

well there is a raptor now

Isn't life great without youtube :-+

It was nice knowing everyone.

Yes ... yes there is!

The linked videos in forum posts here show a massive block of random characters. :-DD

I'm guessing the traffic at PornHUB must be through the roof by now!

I had a couple tabs open, so I have a few minutes cached. Tough times.
Actually, tabs that were open already continue to work past the cached place.
-
Skynet taking over? ICBMs already flying? ;D
Wouldn't mind, if it stays offline, 1990s-2000 HTML internet had it's charme, too ;)

Nope. Totally your fault. You broke it for everyone. >:D

It's ok, everyone should be on the EEVBlog forum anyway, YouTube will get over it :P

"A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation."
Wow, those monkeys have been going at it for over an hour now. Has YouTube been down to this extent before? YouTube TV went down for an hour in July during the World Cup (https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-tv-world-cup-outage-2018-7), but I don't recall the main site being dead for so long (not that I'm on YT all day to really notice, either).
The home page sometimes redirects to https://www.youtube.com/?pbjreload=10, (https://www.youtube.com/?pbjreload=10,) which looks just as broken as the home page does. Someone got 10 peanut butter & jelly in the reload.
-
Now we see a big advantage of P2P systems - no single point of failure.

It's all working again now for me.

It's back!

Breathe. All is well now.

is that post drivel? did the saudis really try to shut down half the internet to supress a journalist death?

"Unfortunately, an error occurred while loading geographic data."
Oh, the irony! ;D
-
Seems to be back. Bummer. I wanted to see the world burn for a bit ;D
-
Well if the Saudi attack pans out this will kind of force the world to react even if the murder in Turkey didn't. This is world class stupid!

I'm looking forward, to the official/reliable sources, which explain what exactly happened.
-
It was nice knowing everyone.
You still have UpTube! :-DD
-
The search function still seems to be a bit erratic. I'm getting a lot more foreign language videos in my searches than I used to get. I've also had cases of getting different sets of videos for the same search.
-
I'm looking forward, to the official/reliable sources, which explain what exactly happened.
The links already posted seem legit and I suspect the larger media world will be reporting on it shortly with confirmation or not coming within 12 hours or sooner.
I'd guess most nations with the capability and skill have similar plans to be called up when the situation calls for it, but in this case, if SA did as it appears they did, they will regret doing it. Of course, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that an adversary of SA, say Iran, did this and made it look like SA did it.

Curiously, I find it works with an older Firefox (38) but not with a newer one (52.) No idea why. I hadn't heard of this site before today. Sample screen below.
As for Hal's site, drivel or not - sometimes yes, sometimes no. You have to decide for yourself in each specific case. I use sites like that (many of them) as hints for things to look into. Raising topics that you will never hear of at all on MSM sites.
-

The links already posted seem legit
We should patiently wait, for the official responses.
Even if the link(s) were 100% correct.
The real source(s) of the outbreak/hacking, could have been done, somewhere else in the world.
Even if it does/did come from that country. It could be completely unrelated to the government(s), there.
E.g. London, has been the source (if I remember correctly), of at least one, massive hacking outbreak, on a very big scale.
Of course it had nothing to do with the UK government. A hacking group/person based in London/UK, did it.
I'm not 100% sure it was London, may have been elsewhere in the UK.
Best to wait till the official responses occur. Innocent, till proven guilty.

Yes, I posted on the possibility that Iran might have done it in order to blame SA. I doubt it, but that is a possibility. Again, I think we'll know with greater confidence within 12 hours.

If a REALLY profession hacking job was done to cause this. I suspect, it could be made to appear to occur, in all sorts of countries and/or organisations.
There is no need for it to stem from the originating country.
On the other hand, it could be a political statement. So a country might want everyone to know they did it.
E.g. Russia and nerve gas attack(s), on people in the UK, fairly recently.

Quite a childish post.

Quite a childish post.
I was already laughing about 'wait for the official explanation'. Because that will be 100% true, for sure. Like the Skripals production.

Ah! The wonders of The Cloud which, the vast majority of our fellow people have taken it for granted...
I am talking about those poor fellows of ours, who have persuaded theirselves that they cannot even breathe if they (meaning, their more-than-valuable personal microwave carcinogen devices called 'cellphones' that have become an impriable* extension of their cold hands) are not on-line...
I hope that some of them have learned something, today.

And, please, I do not want to hear (okay, 'to read') any excuses about the microwaves (300 MHz to 300 GHz) not being an 'ionising radiation' because all the sparkies at the cargo ships during the '40s, '50s, '60s and the '70s, who were fiddling with the NON-ionising radiation of the 7 and 14 MHz HF transmitters, after a few months of service were beginning to be permanently losing their hair and to be having their testicles permanently shrunk.

And, please, I do not want to (okay, 'to read') any excuses about the microwaves (300 MHz to 300 GHz) not being an 'ionising radiation' because all the sparkies at the cargo ships during the '40s, '50s, '60s and the '70s, who were fiddling with the NON-ionising radiation of the 7 and 14 MHz HF transmitters, after a few months of service were beginning to be permanently losing their hair and to be having their testicles permanently shrunk.
Oh dear, we have to give someone "the talk" about power level (there are plenty of threads here where people have been given it). A cellphone is about 1W, ship transmitters can be kilowatts. Of course if you stick your dick in a microwave oven it won't last long, that's 1000W. Also, you provided no concrete evidence of these ill effects. Are there actual articles or just old man's tales? Plus correlation does not equal causation. A lot of that old radio equipment had asbestos, PCBs, pesticides, and all manner of chemical nasties in it.
-
I think its absolutely amazing how rarely all these things crash and how quickly they come back up.
If you ponder the amount of services googles network juggles 24/7 on every android phone, on every web browser, its just incredible how smooth it all is.
-

Ageing can do that.

maybe it was a test to see if people would riot in the streets or commit mass-suicide!

Or just get up, go for a walk and a sandwich

Youtube is not entirely 100% yet. It still occasionally routes to the wrong video than the one you selected, usually a different one on the page.

I.. read a book. I'm not sure if people know what those are any more.

Fiction or non-fiction? I only ever read the latter. It wouldn't surprise me if that isn't common with engineering types.

Fiction. You're clearly boring.

I have dictionary thick engineering books that if I dared read any one of them front to back in one day it would be a death sentance. I hope you aren't one of those. :blah: :=\

I've never voluntary read any book cover-to-cover. I used to have to read fiction books at school, cover-to-cover, but never enjoyed it. For entertainment, I listen to music, watch TV, films etc. As far as I'm concerned, reading is for learning and finding information.

I only read fiction - mostly managemet requirement specs

Does not reading for entertainment have something to do with age? When I grew up there were three TV stations, no cable, no inyernet, and you actually had to "go to the movies". Reading was something I did all the time. It's only in the last 20 years or so that I've slacked off.

There might also be a genetic element to it. My father is just like me. He never reads fiction and his family didn't even have a TV until he was about 10. The only things he ever read for entertainment were comics. My mother always has a novel on the go though.

So four days later and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of confirmation or refutation of the Saudi IP Fragmentation story. None of the major media has said squat about it other that the quick comment about YT going down. Strange...

Growing strangeness in tech lately. First, the Bloomberg/China hardware spying story. Now, this mystery. What's next?

Curiously, I find it works with an older Firefox (38) but not with a newer one (52.) No idea why. I hadn't heard of this site before today. Sample screen below.
As for Hal's site, drivel or not - sometimes yes, sometimes no. You have to decide for yourself in each specific case. I use sites like that (many of them) as hints for things to look into. Raising topics that you will never hear of at all on MSM sites.
A quick glance at that site shows it's a typical nut case, extremism included.

It's almost certainly BS.
While there has been a recently released issue with Linux's TCP stack related to fragmentation (https://access.redhat.com/articles/3553061), given that it was released months ago you can be fairly sure all the major players have patched.
It also doesn't match the behaviour during the outage.
