Youtube inserting ads on paid Patreon content
« on: April 10, 2022, 12:48:52 am »
I know Patreon uses Youtube for it's hosting I see the controls and branding but I am starting to see adverts and I don't remember seeing them before on Patreon.

I am a paying member why am I seeing adverts?
Correct me if you think I am wrong but is that suppose to happen?

It does it with other Patreons videos too that I donate to and I think it's youtube as that is where they normally place them.

No it's not because I left Youtube Premium as I was am using different browser profile one dedicate for Youtube and another for Patreon.

Anyone seeing advertisng for paid Patreon content?

Just install an adblocker.
Cryptocurrency has taught me to love math and at the same time be baffled by it.

Cryptocurrency lesson 0: Altcoins and Bitcoin are not the same thing.

(...)

Patreon only embeds videos from Youtube, just like when you embed (link to) a youtube video on any forum etc. I'm pretty sure there's no business between them.
You might be a paying Patreon member, but unless you're paying Youtube -- you're going to see ads. Your money to Patreon does not go to Youtube.

I was under the impression that Youtube was getting some of it.

Anyway I'll download that last video which I find that easier to play it back and seek.

Oscar (Patreon)

Hi,

Oscar here with Patreon support, I hope you are well today. Thanks so much for writing in about this, and thanks for sending those screenshots as well-- This is very helpful.

The ads that are appearing in those videos is coming from YouTube's side of things. It used to be that a creator would be able to provide ad-free YouTube content by turning off monetization for the videos they host on Patreon. YouTube changed their policy up a bit last year though and claimed the right to monetize all content posted to their platform in an attempt to incentivize users to subscribe to their premium version.

That said, I recommend reaching out to your creator about this. It may still be possible for them to turn off ads for these videos, however they'll need to do it through their side with YouTube.

Log in to Patreon and click the Messages icon in the upper-right cornerof your profile.
Click New message.
Select the creator from the list that populates in the message draft window.
Select the creator you'd like to message.
Type up your message and click Send.

I hope this helps, but please let me know if I can offer any additional information from my end to facilitate the conversation with your creator.

Best regards,
-Oscar

attempt to incentivize users to subscribe to their premium version.

Early last years as a "Premium" member I started to see crap/misleading content (some of course don't appeal to me) bumped to the top of the search results some with more negative feedback than positive. then they started to spam me with misleading/unwanted results and suggestions to paid content/movies not available for "Premium" members where they wanted more money to "virtual own" or "rent" it and finally they removed the negative feedback counter in November so I left. For me there is nothing premium about it anymore.

It's confusing to see ads pop up on content that's supposed to be ad-free, especially on platforms like Patreon, where you're a paying member. This issue with YouTube inserting ads could result from how they manage their ad system, which sometimes doesn't differentiate between paid and non-paid content. As someone who regularly deals with digital content, I've learned how crucial it is for ads to be integrated correctly. They should enhance the user experience not detract from it, especially in contexts where users are paying to avoid ads.

The correct placement and targeting of ads are essential. This is where I've found adspy to be a valuable tool. It has helped me understand the intricacies of ad placement and targeting. With adspy, I've pinpointed the right audiences for my content and conducted comprehensive niche research. This insight is crucial, especially when considering the delicate balance between monetizing content and maintaining a positive user experience.

Patreon has nothing to do with avoiding ads, patreon doesn't pay youtube

Patreon could host content themselves, but they would have to pass the cost down to the creators. Since their take is low (5-8%) they probably want to keep things simple. There is floatplane and OF, where fees are much higher ~30% range.

Youtube could offer a pay per click passthrough rate to businesses for not embedding ads I guess?

It's all on YT and the content creator indeed, not Patreon.

But isn't the content creator able to set options for a given video on YT so that there is no ad at all? Or is it not possible anymore?

You can turn off monetization, but all that means is you won't make any money. Maybe slightly less ads, but not none, youtube is free to put ads in non-monetized videos since ~2020.

Of course. Superbowl ads were always a huge thing.

What about use Bittorrent for hosting? Only cost to them is storing a seed copy if the creators wants to. They could offer creators a little more profit if they choose to seed themselves and/or reward anyone for seeding content.
