Youtube Shorts, blatent copying of content is opt out.

Video that first alerted me to this problem

Shorts is in beta. YouTube’s short-form video creation tools are available in India and are expanding to everyone in the U.S. over the next several weeks.
Oh right, because Indian Youtube is such a bastion of respect for copyright.

Almost every single video uploaded to Youtube by others is opted in to.

Shorts permissions
Allows people to create Shorts using parts of this video. Turning this off will permanently delete all Shorts sampling its content. Not all videos can opt out. Learn more
At the moment the tools let you use sound from other's videos, but it's clear the video itself can be used in the same manner.

Poor Dave has to untick that box 1500 odd times, to stop people from doing whatever they want with small parts of his videos.

This is new. I've been unsubbing from all channels that pollute my sub box with 20 second garbage videos. Frees up some time to discover creator that are not idiots.

Now it will get worse, I guess.

What stops me from downloading with youtube-dl and posting an edit that way?
I'm pretty sure people have been including excerpts from other videos for years.

Yes, and they now give you an option to nuke all those "shorts" and catch off guard all the idiots who trusted The Cloud™ and haven't made their own copy. Dumbed down service → win for content owners. As usual >:D

Once youtube tried to force me to change my username because they thought it was unpronounceable.  After that I never logged in to youtube anymore. That may have been 5 to 10 year ago or so.

Devil's advocate:

How is this feature different from typical fair use scenarios? People have been splicing video snippets from various sources into their own content for donkey's years, but manually.

As I said, it's different because now the uploader of the original video will be able to nuke everything created with this feature on a whim.

And yes, many uses of that will likely be fair use. Hey, why not have a feature for immediate removal of videos where copyright claims would have no legal standing? ;D

(Yes, I know that no one cares about standing when filing DMCA claims, but still...)

Got to like the double standard.  Youtube allowing this but God forbid you use a sound effect that happens to sound similar to something in a Disney movie or a copyrighted song happens to be playing on the radio in the background.

Not exactly Youtube's fault. Blame Disney and any other bastard that like to abuse DMCA laws. To some degree, Youtube is required to honour DMCA take down requests, as they don't want to be legally liable. Once a copyright claim has been made, it is up to you (the content creator) and the other party to resolve your legal differences.
