Title: BOM lists within CS or stick to Excel?
Post by: IanJ on February 13, 2019, 11:54:59 am
Hi all,

Been using CS for a couple years now, prior I was using Eagle, and before that DOS apps.
For the past 20 years I have used Excel for my BOM lists, primarily because the PCB design software I used before wasn't up to it much.

On my BOM lists I like to record supplier info, price breakdowns etc as well as my own stock levels right before production as I try to work out what I need to order.
I will even add mechanical items such as enclosures etc that aren't directly part of the pcb design.
I can see BOM list totals and breakdown right there......

As such, I have never made any effort to correct the details of the component I have added within CS.....as long as the schematic symbol & footprint is basically correct then I've been happy.

But now I am quite fed up with excel and double dipping almost......so wondered if CS BOM functionality might work for me.....any ideas, suggestions? I'd almost like to be able to display within CS a spreadsheet type of layout that I can amend as necessary....rather than edit components on the schematic.

Or should I stick with Excel....?

Ian.

If you use anything else than excel, you will need to export it in excel format for some manufacturers. Otherwise it depends on the manufacturer.

Wow, been 6 weeks since this CS forum has seen any activity.

I'm in the habit of using the simpler CSV export from CS, then open in Excel and format for alternate row colours and I get this:

Probably the direct export to excel works and could be faster as you can setup pre-formatted excel templates, but I've never bothered.

All my parts in CS have supplier info in them, for example my Yageo RC library

It's up front effort to do it this way but so much easier in the long run.
