Title: copying between files not possible
Post by: Simon on April 19, 2018, 02:42:40 pm
So I am making a MKII design of an existing design, can I copy the good bits from the old design to the new? NO!!!!!!!

Works here.

On the schematic level at least.
Are you copying thing from the PCB?

I was trying to copy between schematics. You can't copy between different library files, it's crazy Altium don't support basic windows functionality.....

Hello Simon,

Maybe you were trying to to it trough the "Library Panel" that is used to select and place parts to a schematic.

To do this:
- Open both Schematic Library (.SchLib files)
- In the "SCH Library" panel, select the source part, right-click and select "Copy"
- Select the destination library (trough the files, project panels, or just with the opened Tab as the file should be opened by now)
- Still in the SCH Library panel, right click on any parts or on the blank space, and select "Paste".

Hope this helps!

I am trying to copy symbol graphics between two parts so it's actually within the same file. It is ludicrous, CS must be based off AD for DOS!!!!!

Hello Simon,

Quoting you: "You can't copy between different library files"
And now: "I am trying to copy symbol graphics between two parts so it's actually within the same file."

I am unsure what you are trying to accomplish.
I'm sure I can help, but I'm usure what your goal is.
It would be much more productive with more words aimed at explaining the goal, than expressing your dismay toward learning a new tool.

I would tend to assume you have two libs, and want to copy the "graphic" symbol or sections of it toward a new part in another lib.

Once you selected the part, you can easily select the graphic symbol, and CTRL-C (or right-click and copy), then create a new part in another file (or select an existing part) and paste there...
Just tried it, it works.

Also, trivia: you are correct: CS is based of AD, wich is itself based of AD for DOS.

As I said in the above post I am struggling to copy any lines/pins so if I want to update a part with my new artwork I can't copy lines/text/pins from part to part or schematic to schematic.

Let's say you have two SchLib files.
You want to copy just the part symbol from one to the other.
You click-drag over the schematic primitives (lines/pins etc) to select them, then copy (CTRL-C or right click)
You then move to the other library and try to paste the primitives onto the sheet - and it doesn't work. Right click shows paste greyed out. WTF?

Go back to the original library, select and copy items again. Now paste into the other library.

So, doesn't work first time around for me but works second attempt.

Got it to work first time, you have to "select" the blank work space first..... :palm:
