Thinking of moving to CS but looking for libraries
« on: March 06, 2017, 03:47:49 am »
I've been using Eagle for years and I'm pretty fed up with the ass backwards interface and now the subscription model. I'm evaluating CS and looking to make the jump. Although there is a lot to love, so far instead of the Altium "special sauce", all I've found is a bunch of old ketchup packets. ;D

What I find irksome is the difficulty finding basic passives, say a library of standard thru hole radial capacitors of different sizes. This  is really easy to find in Eagle. Although making a new part in Eagle seems to be a lot more difficult then CS.

Maybe my Eagle brain is just missing it. I've just started climbing that learning curve today. If someone could point me in the right direction....

Old library's up to AD 10 can be downloaded in a single Zip file and work for CS as well from here http://techdocs.altium.com/display/ADOH/Download+Libraries. For newer ones look here https://designcontent.live.altium.com/.

I would recommend finding/creating libraries where each part is a unique component with listed suppliers, makes BOMs easy for the finished design.
Have a look in the vault or search around for libraries like this:

....and Martin is an eevblog member:...

I have a similar issue with CS.    I am a hobbyist and it seems odd that the standard CS does not ship with libraries that contain the basic passives.
I grabbed the martin.engineer libraries which are great to start with for basic SMD resistors & caps.
Does every user have to spend a week creating libraries of passives that will probably be the same content that a hundred other people have also spent a week creating from scratch?  I mean, we are not talking about esoteric parts here.

Maybe we could get a "CS library group" of members started, to build a set of basic hobbyist-type libraries to share on the forum?  I am happy to contribute to such an effort (I may need some mentoring).

if you want to download all actual library in single folder, this method if fine,I tested and  downloaded all >520 files in 10min.
these are good for CS as well.

Thanks  rsivan  - I will give it a try.

Edit1:  Successfully downloaded the files.  Lots of good microcontrollers & ICs. Not much in passive department.

Edit2:  I found Vincent's library for download at siliconvalleygarage.com.
This has passives - including the polarized SMD caps I wanted!  (e.g. "GENERIC CAPACITOR POLARIZED  -  PANACAP-E-GENERIC" )

I think this may be enough to get me started on building myself some libraries.  Whew!

OK, managed to lash together a very trivial pcb and get it far enough to do a 3d view of it.  I havn't worked out all the routing yet, but at last I can start to see CS in a better light!
Thank you rsivan and voltsandjolts.

Seems my problem now is I have too many libraries!

Yeah - I was planning to clone the good stuff from the downloaded libraries into my own as I go along.  That seems to be what other users are doing as far as I can tell.

I think it will be something that evolves for me from the libraries out there but the Yageo is really useful as I mainly use Farnell for prototyping so to have all the bitty resistors and caps sorted is a great help.

Altium has all the STM32 and using supplier links in a design is so quick that I can work with that no problem. Also Altium has Wurth and TI. It really is fantastic.

CS takes away a lot of pain I had using EasyPC and libraries. I mean EasyPC has served me well enough and it has done some good boards for me but CS really is on another level. So glad I managed to buy CS at the current deal.
