« on: April 07, 2016, 05:43:19 pm »
This is an anonymous (maybe Dave can see, but the rest of us cannot) and totally unofficial poll for the Keysight Test to Impress giveaway. Watch the videos if you have not already and you get one single vote for the entry YOU think should be the winner.
There is no need to comment at all. Just push the button of your choice and carry on.

Prize at stake:
Keysight 6000 X-Series oscilloscope 6Ghz with all options and 4 Active 6Ghz Probes
MSRP: $70,000

19 out of 22 is pretty good.

Dave - how many do we need to convince you to post an appeal for votes. We need 340 voters right now. If a video gets 30k views - that is actually possible, just about right.

Lurkers - please participate in the poll. Just click your choice so we know your opinion. A lot is on the line and you can make the difference.

Holy crap - somehow I missed the MSRP, I knew it was expensive but 70K ?  I would be afraid to turn it on.

I can only guess this is a Keysight experiment -  seems anyone would know that high school students would take this because this is a "Facebook" thing.  Expensive lesson.  If this goes to a school, are they tax exempt?

How does one find out about these contests?   I wished I would have entered, I would have found my own high school or charity.  I think Goodwill should enter, I think they are tax exempt.

The entry is a person, not a school. I would be disappointed if a school was allowed to claim the prize on behalf of the individual that entered.

Do you not think that posting this poll on this here forum would give you a rather biased result?
I voted for Marcin, just to show you that this thread is meaningless, you still get my votes on the official one. ;)

I don't think that I get any special treatment here at all - in fact I pushed a little hard an pissed off at least a few (sorry everyone). On top of that, this is a blind and totally un-official poll so there is only a little motivation to not give an honest answer. Merely a curiosity to see at least an average on how the videos would fair in a contest that was judged purely on the content by people that actually understand what is being presented.

Thank you for the real votes, now I know where that Marcin vote came from, lol.  :-DD

I think we can understand Carlos' excitement ... and his frustration.  Some of us even forgive him for it.  ;)

But when you consider the scope of the prize on offer (pun intended) who wouldn't be on the edge of their seat?  I know I would - and I wouldn't ever be likely to work that thing anywhere near as hard as Carlos.

But what is a high school or charity realistically going to do with a 70 grand scope that they couldn't do with a $700 one, other than resell it?

other than resell it?

Why would they keep it?  Would you?  Both of them can buy a new car.  It would be totally insane to keep it.

I'd definitely keep it, but would dispose of what it was replacing.

To go in for a competition where the contest is about demonstrating how you are going to make best use of the prize's features and functionality, but with the intention of immediately liquidating it seems to me at least disingenuous, but realistically I can see exactly that happening. Essentially you've won something under false, some might say fraudulent, pretences to the exclusion of other genuine entries.

I wonder ?  If they sold it, bought new cars to get to school and two scopes to use for school work.   Legally would it be false pretenses.  Because without winning they could not buy the scopes and cars?

They also can put together two very nice electronic labs and still get some nice toys.
Legally my guess is they can use the money to buy 2 - $10 multi-meters to use on water heaters and still stay legal.  Because they can say they needed and used the money to get the meters.

I think a jury would find for the defendants.

My take on this is Facebook makes a bad platform for contests (for contestants).

Dave's method seems to be the most fair.

My thought on selling the scope....

The MSRP is $70k.
Actual purchase price for typical customer is going to be less than that.

Typical customer is a rare instance - ask any Keysight sales person I am sure. I would guess (myself included) that if I needed and was looking to buy, I would be cautious/worried about buying from an individual. If the price was low enough, I could get over that but I would want a different probe package so I would only want the box itself and maybe 2 of the probes but only if it was giant discount.

If the plan is to put it on eBay or some other T&M broker - it could sit there for a long time or the price would have to be very low. After paying the taxes on it, waiting, and selling for a big discount - it seems that the profit would be rather modest relative to the work. Maybe worth it, but not really if it took many people to pull it off and they need to divide the loot somehow.

This is NOT at all like getting $70k cash free and clear. Not even in the ballpark of that as far as cash value goes.

70k - tax  = 52.5 k     How about a 50% discount off of MSRP, seems reasonable.  = say 35k
Now the tax won't be due until Apr 2017 and would be about 19k  so 35-19  =  16k

Still not a bad sum.  Probably not enough for two new cars  :(

No matter how you slice it, it is a very valuable prize.

As far as I know it's not necessarily the scope that is this expensive. It's the four active probes that come with it.
