ELECTRONEX 2024 - Rosehill Gardens Sydney 19 - 20 June
« on: April 12, 2024, 05:29:21 am »
https://www.electronex.com.au/

It's on again in Dave's (and my) neck of the woods.

I've now registered and, with any luck, I'll be able to rock up one of those days for a couple of hours....

I expect Dave will be there if he can (and I expect he will make the time).  As for Sagan, I'm not sure as most of the hours it is open cut across school hours.

Mate... That's just not acceptable   :-DD
I mean.. if Sagan's not there then.... I mean... Jeez
IS IT EVEN WORTH GOING  :-DD

If school is a problem , we've still got 4 weeks to make a robotic clone of Sagan (Arduino Controlled OF COURSE) and we'll get Sagan to jig school
and no worries, we'll have him back by 2:30 pm and the staff will be none the wiser

I reckon it's a plan
LOL

Dave is walking around (i think) Shooting his next video.

- NOW TO THE IMPORTANT STUFF  .....................THE FREEBIES :-DD

Between me and the wife I have amassed
x24 Pens
Kit Kats (i Lost track of how many   LOL)
      Mentos  (Like 7 or 8 )
x3  This Credit card , Bottle opener / swiss army knife thingy (it's actually pretty cool)
x2  Chinese good luck charm thingy's
x3  Fat Guy Stress balls
x2  4 Port USB Hubs
x4  Notepads
x2  Torches
x2  Good Luck Panda's

Bunch of business cards
and like 4 Showbags

Sagan wasn't there so i'm kinda bummed about that.
Didn't see John South from Emona either

I was also considering doing the runna with the Rohde and Schwarz MXO58
This sweet baby is

The Low Low price of ....   $32,000 USD
8 CHANNEL
12bit ADC

Sadly for all that it's only 100MHz on the front end

but the screen is huge
The food was ok
The coffee Sucked
and i finally met Vee at the front desk, who i've only spoken on the phone to a few times,
finally put a face to the name.

So yeah, it was a cool day, Kid in a candy store kinda situation.

Oh also, I have a BWD Scope that i'm repairing, Dead Transformer,    I met these blokes that rebuild transformers,
Turns out i can show them the old one and get them to make me a new one, so .. THERE'S HOPE YET for the BWD Scope.

I was there all day!

I was limited on time - so while I did keep an eye out, I didn't go on a search mission.

I look forward to your video ... maybe I'll be in the background somewhere.

Hi Dave, nice meeting you in person at Electronex. I was the taller guy with the Jay Jay lab folks.
Keep up your great job - the blog(s) and everything else, at the same time you're a totally cool & friendly bloke with zero arrogance. Cheers!

As for the exhibition, honestly I expected more equipment to play with and less sales pitches. Sad reality, I guess. The soldering competition was a great idea. I also got heaps of swag but unfortunately had to pass on that nice ruler/knife thingy as I only had carry-on purchased for my flight back to Brisbane.

How i found dave was kinda funny. and i was gonna mention it yesterday but i thought... Nahh.
But now you brought up "Search Mission"  ok, . . Quick story

For a while now i've wanted to give dave a gift, it was 2 coffee mugs
Coffee mug #1 has the Back to the Future Time Circuits on it
and i know dave loves BTTF

Coffee Mug #2 Has the following message on it

    ENGINEER
      Because
     BADASS
MIRACLE WORKER
ISN'T AN OFFICIAL
    PROFESSION

And.. A fitting message i think

Anyway.... I walk in the front door, i register and get my (what they call) a badge (which is really a piece of paper ...Without even giving us the respect of a plastic holder)
I walk up to the bench and Vee was there and this guy was there, I've got a red box in my hand and i place it on the counter.

Instead of saying "Hi how can i help you"

HE SAYS THIS.......
"UMM.... IS THAT FOR ME ?"
   :-DD :-DD :-DD :-DD
and he wasn't being sarcastic, he was dead serious.   the look on his face was like......   Ohh my, You're so kind, you shouldn't have   LOL
and i was thinking .....Seriously??....Well... I didn't

so i say to him
"No, Actually i left your gift back at home, but this here is for Dave Jones"

You would think at that moment that i called up a sniper attack or something. him and Vee get on the radio's and it's like
"Um yeah, Charlie243 do you have a copy"
"Yeah.. Go Charlie243"
"Yeah, do we have  a location on Dave Jones"

it was like...Calling the entire security team.... Do we know where dave is.

and i was just standing there like a stunned mullet wondering how this escalated from  0  to  Holy crap !   LOL
and they were acting as if i had a special delivery like a donor heart for dave or something. Needless to say, it was funny as hell,   But i played it cool and stayed professional (As you do)

They couldn't find dave,  Dave was Officially M.I.A.
so Vee says, He's probably walking around or having a bite to eat, Check the cafe if you want, he might be there.

Now, My wife wanted a coffee, so we started there and i was also a bit hungry. So after that "Tactical Response"  :-DD From the reception area
(I'm suprised they didn't implant a chip in dave's brain and then said.... Let me bring it up on the satellite imaging )  :-DD

I strolled in and Dave happened to be sitting in the cafe area.
So... Apparently, All guns blazing and the entire security team and event team couldn't find him
AND HE'S JUST CHILLIN IN THE CAFE
LMFAO....

Needless to say , My entry into Electronex was rather comical , Then i had a chat to dave, Gave him the coffee mugs
we had a further chat, he gave me so really good advice
and that was that..

Dave is a cool bloke, no doubt about it. I was suprised to find out he's older than i am ,  I'm 50, i think he said he was 52 or something,     He called me a Youngster LOL
(that was a new experience i didn't expect.)

Nah....Dave's a good bloke, it was cool running into him. and the thing at reception made the day that much better

OH.. 1 MORE
My wife is in childcare.    when she signed in,   she didn't know how, so the guy at the desk did it for her.
For her occupation and place or work
HE PUTS...
Place of work
WORLD HOSPITAL

Occupation
DOCTOR

LMFAO....
I didn't know until much later on,    BUT I NOTICED THIS
My wife said.... She got so much respect and everyone was taken aback when they saw her occupation, and   WORLD HOSPITAL to boot.
i also noticed they paid more attention to her than to me,  i just didn't know why

IT'S FUNNY WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF YOU STUFF UP YOUR ID

it's settled,
Next Electronex,   I'm putting my occupation as
BADASS MIRACLE WORKER
I want to see what'll happen

but yeah i had a good time

I suspect I missed Dave because of a couple of things:
1. I didn't go into the cafe because I had limited time - and when I walked past, I didn't check.
2. My route through the exhibition was identical to Dave's - so it seems probable that we were out of phase with each other.

Anyway, I scored several bags, 15 pens, a permanent marker, 4 rulers, two USB storage sticks (the Tektronix one is super cool), a couple of notepad/post-it, a bottle opener, a USBA to MicroUSB+USBC+Lightning cable plus an insulated drink bottle and a 10m USB2 active repeater cable .... not to mention checking out all the fun gear on show.

UTTERLY DISGUSTING, i agree.

Clearly they haven't catered to the LGBTQ+ community
they should bring out a new DMM,  a collab to end all collabs

OK, SO LET'S HAVE THE OBLIGATORY CHAT ABOUT EQUIPMENT AND SHIT !!!!!

So, i thought the DS8000 that i saw was pretty cool, i think it was a cool $16,000
now, compared to the DS5000  the 8000 has 10GSa/s  vs the 8GSa/s on the 5000
on the front end, i think John South said it had 2.5Gbytes Input Bandwidth
it was ok,

As for the new 12 Bit Scopes,   it's good for a beginner i guess, But it's really low on specs, so i'm not interest,
Now... Tektronix had a scope that was fully battery operated,   Hot Swappable (2 batteries)
then they had this Monster of a scope that had 10GB input bandwidth

then over to Rohde and Schwarz they had this Monster scope, it was $64k
the MXO-5
12bit, but only 100MHz on the front end
Now.... I have the money... but how do you justify 100MHz for $64,0000  ?
oh.. but it was 8 Channels
Now, i don't get this...
You divide that 100MHz between all 8 channels and you're left with like 12MHz per channel,   What's the point there ?

I saw a cool Power analyzer that was interesting and some custom enclosures as well
and i got to play with a Manta Video Scope
QUESTION EVERYTHING!!!

One USG stick was generic 32GB.  The other was only 4GB , but was branded. The water bottle was also branded.  I'll take some photos ... that will be far better than trying to describe.
