I am a youngster and my name is Brett.I just turned 13 years old. When I grow up I want to be a EE just like you.I have built a frequency generator, but I can't measure the frequency because I can't afford to buy a oscilloscope.I have been dreaming of owning a oscilloscope for about 3 years.I have been trying to safe up the money to buy one,but it seems like it will take forever. My lab is in my small bedroom closet. The only lab equipment I have is a cheap multimeter and power supply.I have made quite a bit of projects including a tesla coil, flashlight, radio receiver, and some other things. I would really really appreciate if you would donate it to me,and I would take excellent care of it.This is my video which is a tour of my lab thank you

here is my submission, I am an electronics tech at a secondhand store, where I repair and test electronics that are donated, as well as do security and IT. I am also a ham radio operator, a general electronics experimenter, and just an all around geek interested in everything from vintage phones to computers/hacking/networking, etc. I could really use a new scope, as my current one is only 20 meg, and seen better days!

Thanks for your consideration!

if i were home i would have shown my lab aka a huge messy conglermeration of disassembled electronics that exists between my room and my barn

Dave I just realized the excess in my video must voice that if we're at home which I'm not and can't be right now and unsure if I will be I'm deeply yearning to give you an honest video of my "lab" I only wish I home so I can show off my collection of ancient history tv tubes that I wish I could create many a cool amplifiers with . that I enjoy the challenge of attempting to construct Science equipment you would usually find in a university .there is a really cool atomic resolution capable STM microscope project by I think Dan Beard and I wish I could show you my robotic arm and collection of CRT boards

I'm 17 years old and I'm a Seinor in high school in IL U.S.A and I have been taking apart and fixing electronics since I was around 4 and been building and designing projects since I was in the 3rd grade (built a 555 timer keyboard from aluminum tape and pots!). One of the things that makes me stand out from many collectors and tinkerers alike is that I have Autism, High Functioning Autism though, but It none the-less had an effect on my learning. It made me take apart stuff and well basically it made me figure out how everything everywhere worked because I looked everything up and researched the H3LL out of it when I found something interesting. Enugh waffleing! Where's my soldering iron!  :-/O

A wire without ohms is a short, but a wire with ohms is a resister.

Hi Dave! I love how you give back to the community with all your marvelous dumpster finds!

I am an Electrical Engineering student (Senior) at the University of Texas at Dallas. I would love to make use of the oscilloscope in trying to start up a business designing electronic components for the automotive aftermarket. I am close to releasing my first product on my website (DJTuning.com) that uses the common esp8266 and atmega328p. A working oscilliscope would have been an immense help when setting up the timings on my custom communication protocol between the esp8266 and atmega328p. I am working on building a car from scratch and an oscilloscope would really help me out on building all of the electronics for it. (I plan on making every electronic system myself). Also my birthday was yesterday so this would be a great birthday gift.

Thankyou for considering me for the give away,
Daniel Johnson

Thank you for giving all of us the opportunity to win a scope. I'm sure there is a lot of that could use it. I'm trying to learn electronics, along with get my kids into the hobby. The scope would fill a void, by providing the missing tool I need to continue moving forward with circuit design and further understanding wave forms. I'm currently stuck with building my 10a power supply, there is to much noise and I cant pin point it. Im also learning electronics repair and diagnostic.
Again thank you for so much knowledge and information have a good day.

Hi Dave and Dave 2,

Thank you for the chance to win this.  We are currently in the process of building our first home and will have a good size workshop/electronics Lab.  I am currently not working as I am a full-time carer for my partner who is unwell.  This means on a very tight budget and would love to get some gear to full my lab.  The only test equipment I currently have is a home made DDS Function generator a assortment of DMM's including some old analogue vintage gear.  I am also currently building my own lab power supply.  I would love any gear you can through my way.  I am getting more into digital electronics now and Arduino projects.  I have been wanting to get a decent scope for some years now, but never had the money for it.  This would really help a lot with my current and future projects.

Here's my entry. I'm an empty nester who finally has the time and the means to work on some fun projects. I also enjoy producing YouTube videos in the hopes of encouraging others to give it a try. I tried to get one of those DSO 138 kits working but it is just way to flaky. I really enjoy the videos where you call BS on the EV Roadway and other stupid stuff.

Dave,

Long time follower (Twitter and here) but only recently subscribed.

I love to design stuff, and I love competitive radio direction finding.
Since moving to Sydney, I left behind the world's best RDF community
in Melbourne, where I competed in the Asia-Pacific Champs in 2011.

I'm trying to help the local ham radio community get started building
fox transmitters and directional receivers (sniffers) and running events
with local scout groups, to get people excited about home-built gear.
I publish almost all of my designs completely free on Github or my
website.

To develop in the best DF band (144-148MHz) I need a better oscilloscope
than my 20MHz dual-trace. The Rohde and Schwarz would be perfect tool
to help me contribute!

Here's my video!

Hello,

I've been waiting for an opportunity like this for a while now. I am from the US of A, and I am attempting to build my very own CNC machine. I have gathered parts from various dumpster dives, taking apart old printers and paper shredders, along with some ordered parts. The last bit that I have to figure out is the spindle motor, an AC induction motor. I have no oscilloscopes to use in order to create or modify a controller for this motor, so this raffle is perfect for this project. Thank you for your consideration, and have a wonderful day!

Hi Dave, i'm 12 years old and there is no chance i can buy that oscilloscope with my pocket money, i started electronics 2-3 years ago and i finally found a chance to get an oscilloscope, an oscilloscope is like a fortune to me!! its 10 times greater than an iphone7plus!! i need an oscilloscope so much, its a great equipment for testing and measurement, oscilloscope is the meaning of the life.... i mean, the meaning of circuits! a circuit doesn't mean anything is you don't understand it, it doesn't mean anything if you can't see the waveform, the frequency, and all of those other parameters. btw i've  been watching your youtube videos for a year but i didn't use the forum alot

here is my video below

i'm sorry for poor video quality, i understand english but i don't speak very well

Hi Dave,

My names Liam I am studying engineering at Griffith university in QLD. What I couldn't mention in the video due to time constraints is that I am saving money currently to start a pretty ambitious project. I am going to try build my own quad copter from scratch using the arduino platform and various sensors. Anyway in the video I show how I've been studying for exams using the arduino as a cheap and terrible O'scope and how I could use one if given the opportunity anyway if I lose the competition I guess it's because I'm from Queensland and you know we are about to beat you in the state of origin  :-DD

Long time fan of the EEVBlog, first time forum user!

Just a quick write up about myself, I am an embedded system developer specializing in data communications and real-time systems. Going to school for Electrical and Computer Engineering, I have recently taken up some payload FPGA HDL design work for our physics department at WVU.

I believe I could make great use of the RTB2004 and its mixed domain abilities in the upcoming projects I have! It would be an awesome scope for me to pursue FPGA and DSP development outside of work and school and start having more fun...

Some other sound and DSP work that I do for fun on the side, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAP8yOCg-BtZ7FfrASh_J-fpkGAjsy_Uj

Thank you for your Generosity and Consideration!

Hello

First of all I'm sorry for my bad English and my poor filming quality as you can see I am not used to record video and I can't explaine very well what I want to say.

I am Matthias Hendrickx (16y) I live in Belgium (that explains my English) and I'm studying electronics I have just done my 4th year of electronics and I am going to my 5th year :D , now I make things with arduino such as temperature meters and controlling LCD's and more.

I would like that scope because I love electronics, it would be very handy for school project's and for the project's that i make home, now I'm making my project's all ways with arduino but I would like to start my future project's with the hardware stuff such as IC, transistors, ,... .

Your video's inspire me a lot and i learn every time from your video's.

Thanks for giving me and all of use a chance to get something from your awesome dumpster ;D  .

Greetings
Matthias from Belgium

Hi, Dave.
I'm Jorge from Lima-Perú. Here's my registration video :D.
I'm a electronic engineering student. Here, in Perú, Scopes are really hard to find. Most of the unis, don't sell or give for "free" their scopes. Digitals are expensive too!!
As a student, an scope could help me with my uni and personal projects in the future, specially with audio. I love everything releated with audio. Thanks for this big oportunity. Hope I win.

Greetings!

Hi Dave and Dave 2 !

Here is my quick video. (UPDATE: I have just edited my video and added a bit on the end to show a few examples of what I do to fill up the spare time).

I would like this scope for testing, repairs and comparisons for use on my own electronics based channel, to allow me better and more detailed testing options along with higher resolution, my current MSO scope is only a 100MHz, the extra bandwidth would be helpful!

I do a lot of electronics repairs in my videos, sometimes using the MSO functions, but sometimes I am limited by my scopes bandwidth and feature set, or the number of logic analyser channels. Having more testing options will allow me to go into more detail in some of my videos, which should in turn benefit the people that watch me doing this stuff. I actually purchase items especially to do repair videos on them!

I have so many projects completed (hundreds of them), or in progress (feels like hundreds of them), just look at my video back catalogue.

Thanks for the opportunity !

(updated video, Rev 2.0)

Hi,
I'm embedding my entry right here below.

It was quite tricky keeping it under two minutes but I just about managed!
The background story is simplified A LOT to fit into the two minutes.

Slowly I'm getting back on my feet, so I can continue helping people in need, due to struggling economy, with free troubleshooting and repairs =)

Hi Dave²

This is my entry for the Rohde & Schwarz Oscilloscope, Sorry about the video i'm a very nervous person.
I'm an electrons student here in Durban South Africa, I'm 20 and electronics has always been one of my passions.
Bit on a tight budget at the moment i can only work so much. Most of the stuff i have collected has either been given to me
or salvaged.
Winning an oscilloscope would really help with my home projects, i have some any ideas but i don't have the tools, I've
been using my multi meter to view duty cycles and frequency when playing with SMP's.

Thank you for this chance to win.

Hi Dave, hello to all EEVBlog members.

I'm Iuliu, from UK I'm a electronic repairs technician. I made this video to show my test equipment, including my 50Mghz scope, and i could use your nice giveaway scope in my home lab for troubleshooting the laptops digital pcb's,  chasing for faulty signals (going to rabbit hole with proper guns) in an eficient way using all of those 4 inputs and the use of logic analyzer which for debuging it's one of the most requested tasks . An oscilloscope would really help with my  projects but i don't have the tools to rich those high speds measurments  ,im using PIC microcontrolers and need the check signals at the outputs of it to make sure it does what it's designed to do .
I do reverse engenering for many electronic devices and most of the time a fine scope like Rohde & Schwarz RTB2004  with put me in a 7th haven on haking the devices , especialy this day the manufacturer doesn't release the schematics.
Cheers Dave,Dave II  !
Best luck to everyone !
Please check my video  :)

Hello Dev, my name is Damo. I run a Laptop Service Centre at the heart of city Kathmandu. The April 2015 devastating earth quake took many lives and business here in this city. After couple of years the business is slowly catching up. I have a CRO Aplab 15 Mhz but this nanalog scope is too premitive to handle the signals of advance laptops and Notebooks. I am sorry that video was just over a minute. But after I load it to Youtube it still got shorter, but the theme remais that i need a better Ocilloscope.

I am not in a position to afford a digital Oscilloscope the reason I am writing this to Dev.
Thanks to you Dev and your team.
Damo, Kathmandu.

Hi all,

I am Thomas, as 23 year old Computer Science student from the Netherlands. My vid is below (sorry was quiet nervous and had to give the camera back to my friend haha).
Anyway, I love working on electronic projects when I am not busy studying. Have been working on a project that is in desperate need of a scope, but it is way too expensive for me.
But I am sure that some people here are in much greater need of such a good scope.

Love your stuff Dave! Bye!

Edit:
And yes: I did clean up a bit before posting this video. This is also where I study so I make sure everything is pretty neat most of the time (and also my bedroom) ;-)

Hi everyone,

My name is Nicky, i am a 26 years old freshly graduated with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. I am a DIY'er , RC hobbyist and tinkerer. I've been putting off the purchase of a scope for quite some time now, and this is a great opportunity to participate in this giveaway. My next project will be a battery powered BLDC drive for models and robots, which i am eager to work on with a trusty-crusty oscilloscope. You can find my video down below.

Thanks,
Nicky

Hi Dave,
So why should I win? I have no idea, but here I go. I have completed my advance degree in Power Systems, minoring In Power Electronics. I left school with a large debt and a family to provide for, while this does not say why I should be chosen, it leads to my second paragraph.
I would like to repair the equipments in my video so I can start sharing my knowledge as you do through youtube channel. With this scope I would be able to troubleshoot and repair these equipment aiding aspiring engineers to do the same. I would also be able to share my knowledge of Power Electronics through design projects in the future. Giving back to the same cause; aiding others in their pursuit of knowledge thus empowering them.
Thank you.

Hi I am Damo from Kathmandu, Nepal. The devastating earthquake of April 2015 has destroyed a lot life and business here.
After nearly a couple of years the business looks changing for a good. I have got a Aplab 15 Mhz CRT scope but its just not fitting
to my kind of Laptop Repair Job. So I am writing this to EEblog Dev. I am 55 plus and I am ok with my repair job, just a good
digital scope is what I need. The video was over a minute but reduced to about 50 sec after I upload to Youtube I am sorry for that.

Thank you DEV and your team.
I wish the most deserved should get it.

Hi Dave and David,

My name is Devin Black.  I am 16 years old and live in California and love electronics and engineering and plan to study it when I go to college in a year or so.  In my video I show you a quick tour of my workbench and show my current oscilloscope.  It is a EICO model 460 which I got for insanely cheap on craigslist because it's more than 50 years old.  It is an analog tube scope and it's not the best for detailed probing, which is why I am entering this contest.  I work 2 jobs and have been trying to save up for even a really cheap digital one for a few years now, but with college around the corner and needing a car I haven't been able to get one.  This is an awesome opportunity and I thank you for reviewing my entry.

Hi Guys.
I'm a 33 year old software product designer by day, electronics hobbyist by night. I've been studying electronics for last few years on my own and have religiously watched the EEVBlog videos for a long time now. I'm starting to design and build a precision Ammeter, Voltmeter and Ohmmeter. However with the equipment that I currently use to measure performance consist of some cheap aliexpress multimeter and oscilloscopes that hardly cut the mustard.  :-BROKE

I started my own Youtube Channel a few months ago (thanks Dave, you have inspired me! :-DMM ) and its called Brainpowered Electronics (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtUcgFWvhZbknS5LxvfbMrw).

The project i'm currently working on is in the video below:

Hi Daithi’s (the Irish for David, the last pagan king of Ireland)
I am 54 and have taken up electronics in the last two years.
Most of my projects have been from Youtubers like yourself, Big Clive and Julian Ilett who have recently got new scopes.
I don’t like the sound of my own voice so I’ll video my setup and some projects.
I could not get the video to upload so it here and the power supply I built.

Hi Dave & Dave2,

My name is Ashok, a newbie on this forum and hail from Bengaluru, India. I am into electronics since I was 15yrs old. I began with learning analog electronics via vocational course for repairing TV, music systems, etc and later computers, digital electronics and computer networking. I still remember opening up a sanyo 2-way cassette walkman of my uncle and he going furious seeing me do that without his approval, later I fixed it back and all ended well. Infact he gifted it to me and I still have it :)

I was creative and over active since my childhood and my dad used to enroll me into various activities such as electronics, aeromodelling, music, roller skating, cycling etc and it was really wonderful of him to do that. I miss him!

Sorry to mix up my intro also in this post as it is my first post in this forum. I found out this forum when I was seeking help to make my 4-button multi-chemistry battery charger (used in RC crafts) USB capable. I wanted to test & used old recycled/reused laptop batteries (18650's) for my further experiments with power storage, intending to be used in UPS, EV's etc. I found our your forum EEV, initially I thought it was an Electric Vehicle blog, but when I browsed in I found it was from your youtube channel that I follow. Got myself registered and found that you had a giveaway of an wonderful oscilloscope, so thought I would give my try to have it on my workspace. Fingers crossed!

I am an electronics & telecommunication student, yes an elderly student and it is a cheaper course to enroll as it is a distance education and I didn't have to shell out huge bucks for enrolling and pursuing it. As a tinkerer of electronics and tech, I do make a living installing electronic safety, security systems and solar systems (PV). I happen to own a tiny/micro commercial vehicle that runs on diesel, which is slow and expensive to run and maintain. My first choice and thought was to convert into an electric vehicle using my knowledge in electronics & RC flying. All modern aeromodels & drones (as we commonly call it these days) are powered with powerful (yet potentially dangerous) lithium batteries, with electronic speedcontrollers for the BLDC motors that runs a propeller or a turbine. Making it on a larger scale is tedious, expensive, but would be worthy in the long run.

My life was turning boring with the regular routine work, and a challenge as this was enough me to accept it and then the journey began to collect all the information from the internet and outernet. My biggest hurdle is my own principles, to preserve or minimize the damage to the environment in the process of doing it just living my life. So the recycling of lithium batteries, or any batteries for that matter was my first priority, but to understand I had to start working on it. So I got a few scrapped laptop batteries and opened them to retrieve the cells that could probably be re-used in my project. To have a oscilloscope might sound too far from my requirement, but without one I have stumbled and given up many times of such challenges. So with or without this giveaway, I need to get hold of one to start with, as I will have design my own bldc motor controllers, battery chargers to make it economically viable and scalable in the future if there is a good market for it.

Well I can go on and on, but let me preserve my time and yours so we can do more and talk only that is necessary.

Thank again for the opportunity, and let the deserved win it!

Hello,

here is the video of "me".
It is without words since my English would be an expectation for your ears.
I prefer the soldering iron in the hand and not the cut program, as one notes on the video.
So an R&S would already be nice then I would have more possibilities with many devices.
I wish i had a dumpster like yours  :-

Thanks for everything Dave. For those of us coming from software and who are self taught your videos are beyond helpful.

Check out my GitHub Page for some projects I have been working on, including Arduino 101 and ESP8266.

https://github.com/objectsyndicate

Here is my workbench showing my current hardware,

I want to move to full PCBA design. Here is the current board I am working on (I know I have some ways to go)

I don't want to say exactly which sensors, but I am sure an observant person can figure it out.

I am basically getting to the point where my 1970s o-scope and the DSO aren't cutting it.

(if anyone notices any glaring issues with my PCB please let me know)

Thanks again!

Hello All,

I will update this posting monday, with a 2 minute video showing the project I'm currently working on with my roommate and why we really need this scope!  My roommate and I are 27-26 respectively, we met working at Tesla motors working on Model X and me mostly Model 3, a soon to be amazing car! We applied in our spare time for a NSF grant regarding V2X communication and where award a NSF SBIR grant to study vehicle to infrastructure. We have almost finished the grant and will be published a few paper on our findings and why we believe that AV will make the need for DSRC radios on vehicles unnecessary. We have been renting a Agilent scope for $390 per month because we are unable to afford a scope at the time and returned it yesterday because we are running low on funds. We are looking to take our technology to market in the next 4-5 months and will be needing to buy a scope, we recently demod  this exact Rode and Schwarz scope also picked up by a sales rep yesterday. We are looking to spend about $6000 in the next month on this very scope, and because we are currently book strapping this is a very difficult purchase. I will not be home until Monday, but expect a nice video to showing the two PCBA we have developed for IOT and V2X solutions. I'm a recent graduate with a degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, we are looking to take the information we are collecting with V2I and create the most accurate and detailed model to optimize traffic flow.

Check out or company at www.SinWaves.com

Best, Nicholas Johnson

Here's my submission. I would have purchased a scope myself, but I spent my entire fortune investing in ubeam and solar highways :palm: :bullshit: |O .

Warning: capacitors were harmed in the making of this video. Don't worry, they were made in Shitzen, China.

I've also attached the latest schematics for my ADC project, for those who are interested.

Here is my entry to the RTB2004 Oscilloscope giveway. My name is Charles, and my amateur radio callsign is KD5TKR. I am from West Texas, and I have been breaking and fixing electronics since 1984, when I was seven years old. I currently have a modest workbench, with some older oscilloscopes from the 1970s and 1980s, and I also have a logic analyzer from the 1980s. Recently, I started a YouTube channel, called Bootstrap Workbench, that focuses on repairing and using vintage test equipment, vintage computers, amateur radio equipment and more. Anyway here is my entry with a sample of a few of my projects both complete and in progress.

Good Luck to all the contestants.

only some of the projects are here, as others are part of the house, cctv related' so can not show.

Hello Dave!

I made a channel introduction / workbench tour video yesterday. Seeing your giveaway video prompted me to make another video.
I've only just started out in electronics but I plan on doing much more. Also created a YouTube channel (RiCor Tech) to share what I do with the world. Currently this only consists of a Tron Legacy Identity Disc replica but I plan on doing much more in the future.
Thank your for everything that you have shared on you channel!

Since I am still starting out at this point gear like this would be  absolutely awesome to have. More then anything it would be for me to grow further and to be able to do more with electronics.
Even if I would have to pay duty for it i'd have a wicked piece of equipment that I can't afford to pay full price for ;)

So here goes:

Hello Dave!
I have needed a scope for a while now, and a project of mine has been lying on my desk for almost 3 months for that reason. This scope would also help me fix some old electronics which seem to keep coming into my possession. It would also be very useful down the line in high school and even in college, as my projects become more complex. Electronic engineering has always been an interest of mine because my dad was one. Thanks for the opportunity and good luck to all the other people who have entered!
Here is my entry:

Hello Dave,
I would very much like this scope, and without question believe I'm the best candidate for receiving such a great instrument! I won't be redundant to the below video, so let me add some more great reasons why I need this scope. I left Tesla motors making the best electric cars to solve a more difficult problem and have been bootstrapping and struggling like crazy to get boards working with minimal instruments. We use a USB scope and rent scopes when they are needed. I'm not just a hobbiest, electrical engineering is my life, and I have wanted a great scope for a long time, the cost has just been an inhibiting factor.

I have been doing the circuit design and PCB layout for the company and have used scoped at all my jobs working on real products that ship to real people, to I hope make their lives better. It sounds cliché, but my favorite part of engineering anything is struggling through all the little problems that go into making a product that I hope will make someone's life better. When I was in college I could use the lab anytime after begging the dean to grant me 24 hr access to labs, I then worked at a small electrical engineering firm of 4 EE's who make products for people all over the world, where I had keys to use the equipment anytime. At Tesla it was the same story, it has only been the last 6 months working for my own company that my access to great equipment has stopped.

To learn more about my current project check us out at  www.SinWaves.com. We have been working hard with any tools we can afford, and I'm not going to lie have had to pray things work as the simulations, because we have been unable to really test everything. This scope would save us a large sum of money right now, and help use focus on the products. We are working under a NSF grant and can't buy any test equipment with the grant money, so we have been renting as needed, batching test to make the most of the equipment, we realize this is not sustainable.

I plead to you that you pick mw, as you seem to have so much test equipment and we have so little, you would be helping two budding engineers grow or lab, and as we grow help others we hire, you would be giving this scope to a group not an individual, and helping create products that are more than just hobbyist projects but dreams. We look to solve real world problems using software and technology and have been saving to buy a scope, but if we can use that money of a PCBA run or manufacturing it would be all the better! I won't say that others don't need the scope, but few need the scope as bad as us! Thank you for reading my rant and I hope to see you email saying we have the right vibe. Please help grow our prototype lab and make our dream of building a company from our garage in silicon valley a reality.

Best,
Nicholas

Hello Dave,

We are two young Electronic Engineers with the passion about electronics.
As you can see we don't like too much to use commercial boards, because we can make our own boards.  ;D
About one month ago, our WELEC oscilloscope suddenly stopped working. We cannot effort a new one, so some times we used the one at work but it wasn't convenient for our home projects.
This is a nice opportunity for us, we can take care of the oscilloscope if we will have it.
Here is our short video in the following link, please watch it especially the last 30 seconds:
https://youtu.be/w0wrWxgOHdY

The following link is our debug board project on hackaday,

Hi, Dave. Thank you for the giveaway.  :-+

This is my entry video:

There is not too much to say for only 2 minutes. Anyway. It was easy before. Most of the electronics have been made with analogue circuitry with opamps, tubes, transistors, class AB or H amplifiers, linear power supplies... These days most of the devices I have repaired have digital parts - a switching power supply, DSPs, USB capabilities etc..
I trust to my intuition and experience to fix them. With up to 30Mhz scope I'm blind in this digital world. So a modern digital scope is a must be on the bench. If I win it I will use it almost every day for my work.

Good luck everyone and thanks for the giveaway :)

EDIT:
This is the website with the devices I make http://n-audio.net/

Hi Dave,
I am 18yo student of secondary school of electrical engineering. Only measuring tool I have is multimeter and cheap oscilloscope kit, which is broken nowadays. Proper oscilloscope is too expensive for my budget and as we know, life without an oscilloscope is not a true life. :D Thanks for the possibility for getting one.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a student at Faculty of Electrical Engineering (http://www.fer.unizg.hr/en) pursuing Master Degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering.
I desperately need to build My own lab with signal generator, scope in range 5ns rise time, 100MSPS logic analyzer.
I wasn't taking some projects involving ultrasound because I don't have equipment.
I've looking at some cost effective solutions, ether really cheap or great value for the price. One of them was Rohde&Schwarz HMO1072, HMO1102, but out of my price range :-/. Ten something more affordable and cost effective like Analog Discovery, Some PicoTech products, RedPitaya, and so on. It's realy hard to get affordable digital scope (except Rigol 1052E, which has it's own drawbacks).

Thank you for the chance to win this great scope!

This is my participation in the giveaway. I am 20 years old, studying electrical engineering and computer science in Greece. In this video, I show you some of my projects I've worked on (bike light, Digital variable voltage regulator, EEPROM programmer, 8-bit computer) I am also working on wireless communication between Arduinos in order to make an external sensor for my Smart Home weather station where I will also use/need a good oscilloscope to analyse the signals and debug my circuits. I hope you liked my lab and be reassured that this oscilloscope will be in good use in my lab.

Dear Dave,

Hello, I am Vivek Mathema from Thailand, I have been your regular viewer in EEVBLOG. I am currently doing a research in cancer cell and I would love to study the use of per-defined electrical pulses on cancer cells.  Professionally, I am not electrical engineer and my budget is very limited but with my deep enthusiasm towards electronics I do manage to make a few electronic gadgets whenever possible.

As a student, I cannot afford to buy even an entry level oscilloscope because anything over 100 us$ is out of my reach. In desperation, I did one tried once to utilize cheap DSO138 Oscilloscope kit, but it didn’t work well and I couldn’t figure out what’s wrong. Finally, I made an Arduino-based Poor man’s oscilloscope which has very limited functionality. Basically, It’s a portable oscilloscope powered by arduino uno with a touch screen, a built-in Li-Pol cell, a Li-Pol charger circuit, a voltage booster and a voltage divider module which allows me to measure up to 25 volts of DC input as opposed to traditional 5 volt limit in most Arduinos. However, anything above 1 KHz signal it’s very difficult and virtually impossible to measure with any clarity and precision. I was planning to make a gadget (in a crude terms) which would read a sensor measurement (e.g. CO2 gas level) from a cell culture and feed-in appropriate pulse of square wave signal as output and study the effect of the Pulse on cell growth by later measuring viability. However, I am quite stuck in my project as I do not have Oscilloscope (or funding to buy one) to measure quality of my output signal so I cannot adjust my signal as well. I do plan to use amplifier ICs/circuit to amplify output pulse strength on the output once I have oscilloscope. In Thailand, we don’t even have eBAY so that I could not buy a cheap second hand Oscilloscope as well.

I would love to get my hands on this scope, it would help with my projects and channel immensely,
We have one at work and its a really gone one, but its being used all the time so I don't get a chance to do my own projects on it :(

Hopefully I can get it and I will pass on my Sencore 100MHz CRT scope to someone else who needs a scope without the need of all the fancy measurement features.

I did apply for the job David 2 now has, I cried for weeks when I didn't get it (sympathy plug) so this may help ease the pain  ;)

Hi Dave.

I'm engineer from the Criman astrophysical observatory (CrAO). Long time subscriber, thanks for your great videos!
Here in CrAO i'm developing many of hardware and software projects for real science and my own amateur projects.
Sorry for video length, it little bit longer than 2 minutes. Really i shot a lot videos and tried to put this in your limits withot loosing details...
So, this video is about 3 meter amateur radiotelescope. This device developing for hydrogen line observation, known objects monitoring and new sources detection. Additionally i've tried to combine main receiver with a 10-12 Ghz LNB. This is pure experimental construction.
Unfortunately my lab doesn't have required or very good instruments for developing such complex projects. So some parts is just calculated and tested on the antenna without any laboratory tests.
And i'm only one sw and hw developer on this projects. I have an colleague and friend who helps me with materials and mechanics.  Our finances is very limited so we unable to get modern tools.
Of course your scope will be a good addition in this (and future) work.
This projects is fully open and i will publish all the source codes and schematics on github.
Anyway if i don't win i just happy to announce this project and open to any advices and questions.

Hi Dave & David8) I'm from Australia, Not Austria! I met you (Dave) a couple of times at the Electronex exhibition in Melbourne.  :-DMM
Thank you for this contest opportunity!  :-+
I had assumed 2 minutes would be more than enough time for my entry video, turned out it hardly was!  :palm:
My old analog scope could benefit from an upgrade!  :-BROKE
  • The trace is wonky
  • Some scan rates are out of spec
  • It's difficult to measure anything
  • It's difficult (or sometimes impossible) to even get to the part I want to measure
  • And don't get me started on packets and protocols!  :scared:
That being said, here is my video entry.

Hi,

Here is my submission. I'm an electronics engineer, I'm busy setting up my own electronics lab. I want to do more of my own development and design work without having to borrow equipment from work or friends.

I'm currently studying part time towards a masters degree in electronic engineering while working full time for an engineering startup. The main subject of my video is the test bed for my masters research - it's to study different active battery balancing strategies. However I'd like to take it further into development and perhaps even production, once I've improved on it, and completed my degree.

Hope you enjoy the video :)

Hello David and Dave,

Hope you appreciate the ORAL B take on this entry!

I am a physicist by education and electronic design engineer by professional trade that works independently developing laser control orientated hardware. In times where people like me struggle to find any consistent work in the science technology field where the market is now dominated by Oil and Gas (certainly here in Australia), independent inventive development and/or repair work is the only option presently available. The potential to acquire this Rohde & Schwarz RTB2004 oscillscope would mean a dramatic improvement in embedded prototype design (e.g. Mem, CPLDs & FPGAs) and testing compared to the limited resources that I have available. Most of all it would be something NEW that would further inspire both curiosity and inventiveness!

In ending I find your blogs very useful and interesting! I really envy the variety of test equipment that you have reviewed in the test measurement setup and needless to say other useless tips!

Entry from a youngster here! I'm 15 and have been watching your videos for years, and been active on the forums for a couple of years. I also really enjoy the  discussions you and Chris have on the amphour. I'm a Ham licensed as an extra (Highest class in the U.S). I show a couple of my projects and radios I've built in the video, and my current (15mhz) oscilloscope whose capabilities I have saturated with my RF projects. Also having a logic analyzer would be very useful.

I enjoy building minimalist qrp (Low power) radios, building weird and wonderful antennas, and playing with digital logic circuits. Currently I'm not even able to view my hf rig's IF signal as my scope is too low bandwidth. Right now I am reading through the Art of Electronics, and Learning the art of electronics. Currently, all my homemade transceivers work in the HF spectrum, but I am in the design stages of building a homemade 6m ssb rig, as I have no low vhf capabilities right now.
My HF radio is quite old (Works great though!), but thankfully the designers left a acc port that allows you to control the vfo, transmit/receive, and a few other things, via a parrallel interface. Most modern radios allow a computer to control them over the 'cat' interface. In order to ease the use of digital modes, I'm am planning a 'cat'  to my radio's parallel interface adapter.

Thanks for running this, Dave!

Hello Dave,

I would love to get that gorgeous scope. I have HMO1002, but 50MHz is already too slow for me. That scope is just one year old. Anyway I am moving to high frequency, high voltage and sometimes high power projects, so I need faster one. And I was looking right at the one you shown, just price is stopping me how. Renting is cheaper. On the other hand I am freelancer living from electronics, so I might be forced to buy it after all.

Small off topic I started my YouTube channel where I will be explaining interesting and/or hard to find thinks. Also some review are coming (just because even BK precision does not tell much about that product on their web site). My channel is called ESD Blog (no I haven't copied, initial idea was ESD (embedded system design)).

We are an organized group of local engineers and makers. We are still in search of equipment and tools that our members can use to build the next big thing.

We don't have a CRO yet in our makerspace. Still weare searching for a sponsor. As a makerspace, its an inevitable equipment for our makers for doing their projects. We belive this context will fill the big gap on our makerspace!

Hello Dave and Dave2

My name is Florian, i'm 15 Years old and i am from Germany.

Electronics are, together with programming my biggest hobbys and i got early into it because my dad is an electrician. He showed my the basics of Electronics by connecting components together with aligator clips to create basic circuits like a simple blinking circuit or he showed me how a SCR works. I was still in kindergarden when i received my first electronics kit, a basic construction kit with resistors, caps, switches... which are mounted on plastic strips that can be connected together using press-studs.
In primary school, as a easter gift i received my first real, so called "Franzis" electronicy kit, a kit about experiments with low-power lasers. Those kits basically contain a breadboard, components and a book about the basics of electronics and the topic. I got "a few" more of those kits over the years, and this is how i basically learnt a lot of things about electronics. In 3rd grade for example, i built an 2-Digit 7-Segment counter with blinking overflow detection from jellybean logic on a breadboard. In the Age of ten i got another Franzis kit, but this time with an Arduino in it, so you can say i can program arduinos for 5 years.

My entry: https://youtu.be/soD3hYqHdcM

PS: I had a lot of more footage to show, was quite difficult to get it all in a 2-Minute Video. I completely left out any old projects of mine and only showed one recent project, an other one is an high-speed photography flash, but i didn't put any footage about it in the video. This was another project i wanted to show where a better scope would help, but there was no time left in the vid. Also i commented the scenes where i used my scope but again, there was no time left.

You are allowed to win things in germany if you are are 14 or older, and i am 15, so: no problem. I would also pay the taxes for sending it to germany.

Auf wiedersehen! (That means "Good Bye".)

Hi Dave
This is Richard and Alex, we are students.

We are starving for a nice DSO like this;
for something that happens very fast and violently ;) (hey! we are talking about the coil gun here!), all the parasitic starts to matter, a DSO seems like the only way out.

https://youtu.be/kiRELheK5WE

we actually spent 20hrs+ on a way better video, but unfortunately, well, things went wrong..  (hard drive stopped chuuching)
Good on ya, mate.

Hi Dave,

My aim is to build low cost instruments and enable as many people all over the world, to access a scope and invent(be it in Africa, China, India etc), utilising all sorts of interfaces that might be readily available in desktop PCs, I hope it is doable, like ATAPI, hacking in flash/sar ADCs 2x8bit or 1x16 into parallel ata, pretending to be a cd-rom or hdd, maybe even packing data into SATA LVDS and ingesting data at up to 6gbps etc more info and ideas:
GinScope project page: https://hackaday.io/project/19374-ginscope-science-toolbox-oscilloscope
Which should evolve into GinLab - Science ToolBox, all accessible, programmable & controllable over the network :-/O (if UK does not kill me first |O, but that is another story)
Working mvp/first prototype https://github.com/soholt/GinScope (and some extra thoughts/philosophy)

Currently my only instrument is VICY VC99 multimeter :-DMM
Proper scope & logic analyser would provide me with a solid reference and debugging abilities  :bullshit:

(p.s. You could watch only the first two minutes :phew:)
The scope video:
https://youtu.be/jmDLRDejVgY

Controlling hardware via browser video:
https://youtu.be/QWQgSO8D5LQ

Will also be making pure Arduino scope
All other public projects https://hackaday.io/neris - nearly all in need of a scope  :-BROKE

Thanks, Neris

I would like you to remember that I am only seventeen years old and I don't have any kind of financial support. I have managed to do almost every project I want (specially by recycling almost all components!) but making a scope is way to hard.  i hope it is not too late, in arg is not midnight yet.

Hi Dave and David,
I'm a yungster from Hamburg in Germany, 14 years old. I begun with robotics(NXT 2.0) when I was 9, now I am more into digital electronics, because it just fascinates me that i can run a complex simulation of something on computer whitch consists of different charges and voltagelevels. Now threre is this plan in my head to build a chronograph. Thats the first thing for witch I need this scope because I need to measure an accurate clock frequency otherwise I would get inaccurate results. Also alot later in maybe 3 to 6 months I want to try to connect my planned 8bit Computer with the chronograph to not show the counted steps but an allready calculated velocity.

https://youtu.be/r-4thitNBNU

I would of couse like to get the scope but chosse the one how you think is the best.
Have a good Day

Hello, My name is John. I have 13 years old and I am from Poland so sorry for my English and accent  ;)

I started with electronics when i was eleven. I get and Arduino for Christmas. I was also interested in programming. I started watching EEVblog and I so much like your mailbag videos.
I have built robots, games on 2x16 screen and things like that. Then i get wifi-module and made something like smart home with turning leds on, temperature, clock, timer etc. Then I have started to learn clean C for microcontrollers. I wanted to have an oscilloscope to better understand what is happening in my circuts, but I did not have money. So I made my oscilloscope from Arduino and Processing. It was not precise, slow and had range up to 5 volts :(
Without oscilloscope it's hard to me to understand how FM, AM, coils, AC and curcuits work. I would be very happy if I had won that device :bullshit: :bullshit:

  Hello Dave and David,

  This is my entry:

    https://youtu.be/f2PC8PM7mYY

  In summary:
-open source sampling oscilloscope usable with a sound card: 100Ms/s and 100MHz bandwidth.
-can open source and maintain a netlist converter from LTSpice to Kicad which I used to design the PCB for the above project
The sampling oscilloscope can be easily modified to reach 1Gs/s and 1GHz bandwidth using better components (and better tools for testing). The same architecture (fast comparators driving diode bridges) can be used for a bandwidth of several GHz and 10Gs/s or more.

Thank you for your contribution to the electronics community.

Hey Dave,

Here is my entry for the Scope giveaway. The time on the video thumbnail says 2:01 but when you play it, it is 2:00 flat and should live by the rules of the contest. I hope you enjoy. The remaining text below is not intended to be part of the judging info but to clear up some choices for those that are curious.

Some may be confused as to why I’m using ethernet in my designs due to higher latencies and non-deterministic behavior. I went with this technology because knowledge on the internet seemed to be more approachable than a fabric like Infiniband and learning how to use sockets in C was surprisingly straight forward. As far as addressing other latency and non-deterministic performance issues I will quickly mention that I am using only point to point systems for the actual link controllers as well as UDP in the hopes of alleviating just such fears. Finally, this is all just for fun so if I don’t get ideal performance with ethernet I can try something new next go around! I will have learned a lot from this experience by then too.

Mezz

Hi Dave I'am Don from Florida , USA USA , I got a reminder to watch your newest video today and its a winner CHICKEN DINNER ! Unfortunately this year when Keysight was doing their "Scope month" I was not able to win I did however enter everyday not knowing that because I live in Florida I could not win a FREE SCOPE , so maybe thing's will turn around for me . I do however have a scope if you want to call it that , I made it from a cheap Chinese kit and you think your scope is crusty I have the flagship of CRUSTY SCOPES a genuine DSO138 2.4 TFT Digital Oscilloscope Kit DIY . After buying one kit and it did not work I bought a assembled kit that did not work so I returned it and ordered a third one ( I still had the first kit ) the third one was a fail so with 2 kits I made one that worked , it was the switch's I think that they are the finest switches on the planet HA HA ! ( same with my scope ) Lately I have stopped building " Joule thief's " and have been working on a CFL light that will run under 1 volt , I have got one to run off of 1.2 volts and have not given up after 4 months using scrap parts out main distributor ( Radio Shack ) has gone out of business so I have turned into a cannibal 24 / 7 running adds for broken electronics to the point "The Men In Black " showed up at my door on 9 / 9 / 2016 wanting to know what I was building , no joke , I was pulled over the next day by most of our local police for the same reason . A real scope will change my life and I can use it to trouble shoot the junk kit's I keep buying from China and start really inventing some cool stuff I have a lot of ideas , but one major thing is holding me back can you guess what that is ? I 'am disabled but not looking for a pity party just a working scope . If I get one I will cherish it and as my first born I will name it Dave the master of electrons , I will have that professionally engraved on its face plate . Well I'am done ranting but keep me in mind , I will use this scope everyday even if my wife gets a little mad for me zoning out on her watching waveform's . Now I will try and post part of the video I made , my camera was not running when I started showing off my toys I made but caught this around half way through . Thanks for the great videos I enjoy them so much especially mail bag when you do the tear downs , my favorite video to this day was when you took the Keysight multi meter and gave it a stress test taking it on a real "Road trip" 88 KMH and then at the end tossing it off the dam , I don't know why I loved that video so much maybe it is some deep seated resentment towards Keysight for excluding Florida from their contest , HE HE HE ! I have that bookmarked for when I'am feeling a little down . Looking forward to more videos I really do enjoy them , Oh I was the person that called out Keysight for the probe artifact tapping the BNC connector after watching your post EEVblog #14 - An unusual oscilloscope phenomenon! then EEVblog #20 going on to EEVblog #21I brought this up live while Daniel was praising their new scopes and had him do the BNC tap test he was flustered and because I could not win after entering for a month straight everyday I was falling off my chair , thanks for making my day , they did say that they would get back with me but the never did . I wonder why ? Thanks for all that I have learned from your videos and I hope I have a chance of going from REAL CRUSTY TO A FERRARI . You have a great day in upside down land Australia not Austria ! ! !

I could use this for my "lab", I don't have much in the way of trst gear and most of what i want to do involves high speed data.

Sorry, couldn't find an embed bbcode, so here is a hyperlink.

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda
Pro tip, do not run my commands!

Made it (nearly) on time.

Just the video, no text to reduce your workload.

Greetings from Germany

(My old scope would get donated to an beginner, of cause)

Hello Dave,

My name is Bart, I am a hamradio from the netherlands for over 35 years.
my video : https://youtu.be/r5WVJLd-FXE

I create a lot of things over the years and started using microcontrollers and designing things around it about 5-6 years ago.
Eevblog and a lot of other stuff on the internet gives me a lot of nice ideas to work on.

I do not rebuild or copy existing designs, nor do i use prebuild stuff like arduino shields, i develop my own solutions to a problem.
Designing PCB's using Eagle (dabbling with Kicad at the moment) i still etch my pcb's at home using the Tonertransfer method which i pefected.
Single and Double sided is no problem, even using small SMD components like FT232 is possible. I have given several 'hands-on' presentations on it like here : http://www.pi4vlb.nl/2015/06/printen-maken-volgens-de-toner-transfer-methode-door-bart-pa2bv/nggallery/thumbnails

In my video i show you a few things i made.

The radio is special to me, as it was a build for my late mother, she didn't understand modern radios any more, as the only knob on them nowadays is 'volume', the rest s via pushbuttons and menu's. So i created a radio with just a volume and a station knob. All the local cableradio stations are preprogrammed. Pushing the knobs (encoders) you still can set audio, time, display etc.
It's actually using 2 Atmega328p's, one for the display, receiving commands via i2c and using 'stylesheets' to display data send by the other one controlling the tuner and audio components.
She sadly died a while ago, and i'm working on converting it to a DAB radio.

The GPSDO's are two different approaches, one with a PLL chip, which is build by several HAM's already, the other one is an approach to create more long term stability. I started it using standard ttl logic, but the goal is to redesing it using a small fpga or cpld.

New projects in a design and prebuild-fase (i search on hamfests etc for components) are a Universal Multi-input DC to 3GHz power meter to display output power and SWR. It will accept all kinds of powercouplers and heads, and can be calibrated over a large range of frequencies and power ranging from microwatts to kilowats.
There is also a dual (or tri-) band (2m/70cm/23cm) transceiver in the making, but the difference with available quipment i that the transceiver has no knobs/dials/display. Everything will be done via a small battery operated remote control box via bleutooth, and audio is also going over bleutooth using regular mobile devices.
Also a 1.3GHz and 2.3GHz preamplifier are in the collecting parts fase, as a 13cm power amp, and an ATV transmitter.

So you see, ideas and projects enough, and the reason of entering the contest is that my 2-channel rigol is too small for the job. I tried to get my hands on one of the special offer RTB's, but in europe it was not a public offering. Buying one is not an option, it is just too expensive.

Thanks for your time, and i will follow your blog for as long as i can.

Regards,

Bart

I know I'm posting after the last date for submission. I completed the video yesterday but couldn't upload to YouTube  :(  But I'm posting it anyway. It's okay if you don't consider this video for the contest (at least you'll see it I hope  :))
