The people at Dangerous Prototypes are having a competition - "the open 7400 Logic Competition".

Similar in spirit to the '555 Timer' competition.

Can you even buy the original 7400 series nowadays?

It's very expensive and is much cheaper to buy LS and HC variants.

Rules say you can use any discrete logic family, 7400, 4000 etc.

Nice to see someone encouraging the continued use of these devices. 

It just takes so darn many of them to do anything particularly useful.  At least as compared with what can be done with microcontrollers or CPLDs/FPGAs.
