But does the cat return the favor? I've seen dogs lick humans, but never have I seen cats lick people. I'm not a cat person, so this campaign just made me do this...

Oh, cats will give you a serious licking if they like you and if you let them. Cats do it to each other as mutual grooming thing - classic mammalian group social bonding by making everybody smell of everybody else. The problem is that a cat's tongue is designed to groom fur and rasp the meat off bones, they actually have sharp little barbs on them. The result is that a cat's tongue feels like sandpaper, if they lick you more than about three times in one place it really begins to hurt.
