Based on your description, I sounds like you were in the slum. Shenzen is one of the most developed city in China. Market like that should disappear 5 years ago in Shenzen.
I'm curious as to why anyone would want to go there in person for small quantities of stuff. You can make deals online just fine and you communicate in written English which seems to work better for all involved.
