Universal 8 port ADC/DAC/GPIO hat for 40 pin Raspberry Pi
« on: February 16, 2017, 08:31:04 pm »
Hi Guys,
I have just launched my Kickstarter campaign https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1673888854/adc-dac-and-gpio-universal-raspberry-i-o-hat-8-por

My hat is a All-In-One 8 port ADC/DAC/GPIO hat for Raspberry Pi.
  • up to 8 analog 12 bit inputs (ADC)
  • up to 8 analog 12 bit outputs (DAC)
  • up to 8 digital channels (GPIO)
  • internal thermometer
  • fast 25MHz SPI, 400kSPS ADC
  • internal 2.5V (or 2x 2.5V) or external 3.3V ADC & DAC Voltage reference

It is fully software configurable. Any of the 8 pins can act as ADC (analog input), DAC (analog output) or GPIOs . It is possible create almost any embedded device. Some simple projects like:
•   weather station
•   voltmeter
•   parts tester
•   digital thermometer

Using it is possible to:
•   control engines
•   build robots
•   read potentiometers
•   read joysticks and dials
•   read analog and digital sensors
•   provide signals for analog circuits
•   act as a digital potentiometer
•   read and write any signal (analog or digital)

I quite often need for my Pi projects analog inputs and outputs. On the market I have found only single function slow I2C ADC, DAC and GPIO hats. I needed at least two of them to have both analog outputs and inputs. So I needed to create my own one.
If you think that it is worth sharing let others know.

Regards
Peter

OK, could be useful for prototyping.  First backer...

Been reading up on the chip you're using, and it looks quite handy for some of my own designs - so I've upgraded to the £55 level to allow more prototyping.

Out of interest, are you using the AD5592R or AD5592R-1?  The latter seems like it would allow 3.3V logic interface to the R Pi, but 3.3V or 5V to external  I/O.
The AD5593R I2C version also looks useful for designs with I/O pin limits and not requiring the high transfer rates.

AD5592R

this thing cost more in reel of 1K than single STM32 dev board INCLUDING shipping, while ADC and DAC are 2/3 times slower. What am I missing? other than incompetence* leading to buying highly specialized chip instead of banging 100 lines of code firmware for STM32?

Edit: * usually its institutionalized incompetence, with PMs picking parts, or I dont care how much it cost fields like Education.

Who logs in to gdm? Not I, said the duck.

Good point, but in a commercial product someone has to write and maintain that code, as well as testing and documentation, plus it needs an extra step during manufacturing for programming.  The cost of all that adds up much more than you'd expect.  Many of the products I help design are low volume and high margin, so the component cost is only a small part of what needs to be considered.  Of course, single source parts going EOL is a major problem.
