Mesay voice translator
« on: September 12, 2017, 06:23:55 am »
I really tried to force myself to watch the whole video but my mental health is more important to me.  ;D

From the technical aspect I am very doubtful that this thing actually works...
Translations from Mesay are most likely "messy" at best.

That is the problem with poor audio translations...
You ask for directions to the hotel and in response get punched in the face. You'll never know why.  ;D

Things can have multiple meanings based on context and local culture, I doubt that stupid little thing could understand that. Gestures and body language can be a big thing too, so it's still good to do some cultural research before traveling rather than relying purely on a machine.

True. In Slovenian language word "gori" can mean: up, fire or mountain.
So to say "there is a fire up on the mountain" you say: "Gori na gori gori".  ;D

On the other hand, have you tried https://www.deepl.com/translator ? It is getting better - and this is already better than Google Translate... Of course you can still trick it, but for complicated sentences also humans can get tricked. I remember translating exercises in school...

It's a lot easier to do text2text translation.
With audio you need to do speech recognition first which is very difficult to get right since every person sounds different and there are a lot of dialects within each language.

English and Chinese are the most difficult since as well as the accenting they contain so many idioms.

Go to a DIY shop in Thailand and ask if they have new wood.
'Mi mai mai mai?"
The answer if affermative would be 'Mi mai mai hkrap'.
If not then 'Mai mi mai mai khrap'.
Good luck with that. :)
If they added a camera and have a recorded history that together can give context it might start to get plausible. But not in this or next decade.

This is really funny  ;D

I enabled automatic subtitles just to check if google/youtube understood anything. (Mostly it didn't).

BBC Click! recently showed exactly this kind of translator in action. Chappy wore it round his neck and our intrepid reporter spoke to him, it translated, he spoke back and it translated back. Perhaps significantly, the translation actually took place in the cloud, so you need a net connection for it to work (I guess that makes it different to the Mesey, but it is realtime voice translation which, I think, is the stumbling block for respondent's mental health issues).

I'd link to the exact point in the video except that you have to have a BBC account because... iplayer.

I'm guessing Slovenia doesn't have active volcano(s). If it does you guys are so screwed.
