Title: My little buddy had an accident, any help is appreciated :(
Post by: 8086 on April 02, 2014, 05:58:10 pm
So yesterday morning my cat was limping around the house, and it turned out he has broken his leg...  :'( We have no idea how it happened.

The main problem now is that it requires specialist orthopaedic surgery, at a cost of nearly £3,000! The alternative is to amputate, which in my book is no alternative.

He's currently in a cast, but it's only a temporary measure and his leg is still broken. We have to keep him in a dog crate to stop him jumping on things, he still tries despite his injury!

We're going ahead with the surgery which is scheduled for next week, but it's very expensive for us and any help you are kind enough to give is gratefully received.

I hope you will collect the money. I send you some money.
This is fucking expensive for a surgery.

Very fucking expensive, cheaper to get a new cat.

In all seriousness though, I would go to the end of the earth for my cat (who is called Mosfet), wish you all the best.

I had a cat that someone shot (2 year old), and hit his rear left side tibia fibia. He disappeared for 5 days, and dragged the wound in the dirt. So besides the shattered parts, he had an infection.  The Vet used special steel rods, qty 4,  1.5 mm that were threaded on the ends and screwed into the ends of the tibia fibia, then a 5 mm rod with clamps that held these ends in alignment. Memory was he charged $1200USD for this procedure. It took 6 months before the rods were removed. Had to keep him in a cage to stop him from jumping. He lived 10 years after this, but the stress from this resulted in diabetes. Which was corrected by changing to 40+% protein kibbles, with no grain glutens. But had to put him down last year from organ failures. His x-rays showed lead splatter. Happy that neighbor moved last year.

This might seem like a crazy idea, but you could come to central Europe to do the procedure. Travel from UK to Poland, Czech Republic or similar place is not that expensive. Travelling with pets by plane is rather expensive if even possible and very traumatic for them. According to some people I know, road trip from London to westen part of Poland is about 200-250GBP (depending on your fuel consumption - propane powered car would be the best) and anywhere from 20 to 30 hours drive depending on conditions on the road.

I think a procedure like that could be done here in Poland for maybe 1k GBP tops.

Thanks to everyone who has supported so far, and for your support even if you haven't given money. We're up to about £340 which is awesome!

A thought did occur, if anyone doesn't feel like donating money but happens to currently need some assembly work done, you can also help by giving me the work via http://www.circuitology.com (http://www.circuitology.com).

Just wanted to point out (since there has been some confusion from some people elsewhere) that Jeremy will receive the surgery next week no matter how much we make on this campaign, so his leg is not 'on the line' so to speak. All help is really, really appreciated. Thanks everyone.

I hope he makes a full recovery. One pf my cats is up to around $15 000 (AUD) in vet bills so far. The biggest incident was when he was run over and had his pelvis broken in four places around 3 years ago. The first attempted operation involved using titanium screws and cost around $3000, a few days later the bones became separated again so he had to be taken to another specialist to have a go at putting it back together with more screws and some kind of cement, that trip cost around $6000. He had recovered almost fully a year later then got bitten by a snake, another $3000 for anti-venom and treatment. Then a few months later, back the vet to have some of the cement ground off of his pelvis.
Today, he is alive and happy... and confined to indoors.

To be fair, they only said it would be cheaper, not to actually buy a new cat. And they are right, he cost I think about £350 when we got him. So this is getting close to an order of magnitude more expensive...probably will be once we total up the other costs like the temporary bandage and xrays etc. The indiegogo campaign is only for the surgery and recovery time, so it will probably end up closer to £3,000 or £3,200 ish than just the £2700.

He got a new bandage tonight as the old one started slipping. Another £100!

Still, he seems happier than he was yesterday, this one is smaller so he can move better. :)

We just got him back :) The surgery was fine, but the cost was £3000, not £2700...for some reason. But anyway...

He looks hilarious, he has a cone and he's been shaved. More pics to follow later in the day.

Vets are expensive, I have got to get the dogs teeth cleaned at £400.00 plus. They used to say that vets went to college for six years, one to learn medicine and five to learn how to charge.

Glad he is doing well :)

I made a small donation on Friday as I would not wish this on any of my 6 cats.

Edit: Pity you have such bad vets in the UK. My vet (here in South Africa) would do it pro bono if you could not pay.

A new update on the campaign, with picture: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/orthopaedic-surgery-for-jeremy/x/6962840?c=activity (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/orthopaedic-surgery-for-jeremy/x/6962840?c=activity)

Thanks for your support everyone, we still need funds though! We've maxed out all credit we have so this is an ongoing burden. The £509 raised so far will be a massive help, thanks to all who have donated so far.

It is indeed a pity that vets require so much money here - but given we live in the south, there is little to no community feel and nobody will trust anyone, and vets here are businesses first and foremost. Even to amputate the leg would have cost £800, and if we didn't have that I don't even know what other options there would be.

I think you will generally find that all over... I'm in the south-west and it's pretty much the same here! When my one of my Mum's boxers (Ozzy - guess who he was named after?) decided to leap off of an 8ft wall when he was a puppy (they live on a hillside, he saw the old man and got excited!!) smashed the whole of his tebia (is that's how it's spelt??) that cost Ma well over £5000! Titanium plates and screws, a cage, a collar and 6 weeks later he could walk on it again! The neighbor witnessed it at the time, is a very well-to-do chartered engineer, about 120 years old and a bit of an ass, turned to Mum at the time and said "better get saving dear or I have a length of 4 by 2 in the shed if you need it"... I will not repeat the retort/wrath of my dear old Mum, but I'm surprised just how well she could use every expletive that I know in such a fluid manner!!

Best of luck, and all the best to the cat, my dog is insured up to the hilt (it's my missus boy really). About the idea of taking pets to Poland, my missus is from Poland, and I've seen the level of care they gave to her cat Bonfacy... Wow, really impressed! He managed to give him another 10 years of life (he was very ill) of well being... Vets over here... Well, I think you know. It's just a business...

Kind regards,

Karl

Glad he's making it OK.

My wife brought a cat into the marriage, she'd had him for a long time. Actually it was the fact that he liked me that made her decide I was worth keeping.

He made it until he was 21. By that time we had been through a bout of feline diabetes, and my wife being squeamish about needles, the task of giving him daily insulin shots fell in my lap. Fortunately it subsided and we only had to give insulin to him for a few months. It was really tough to take him into the vet for the last time, I had to hold him when the vet euthanized him.

Now we have a lap dog, a little min-pin/chihuahua mix that loves the heck out of us but man, does she have health issues. Allergies to all the trees around us, grass, and a lot of other stuff. Got her through a series of inoculations to cure her of her allergies, most of it helped. She recently had her hind knees worked on, her knee kept popping out of joint so we took her in and they filed the ends of the bones to make it stay in place.  Luxated patella, it's called. Now she needs to have the other knee fixed as well. Surgery for dogs is expensive. But she's worth it.

So I know what you're going through.

My parents recently lost a cat to chronic kidney failure, he lasted much longer than they thought but he had to have pills and renalzin every day, that fell down to my sister and I. Never fun.

Luckily Jeremy loves his bee flavoured painkiller

He is such a pretty kitty :)

Those stitches do look painful.

Will see if I can give some more in few days (with pay day coming along).

Edit: He sure does like them painkillers ;p
