« on: December 12, 2013, 03:25:55 am »
Robox is a 3D printer with some cool features like:
High Resolution - 20µm
Quick-Change Head – The removable head system allows you to change the function of Robox quickly and easily. Upgrade your Robox to become a dual material printer, stylus cutter, milling head or 3D scanner, the possibilities are endless!

They are also looking at things like cnc milling circuit board, solder past extruder and pick and place head.
And much, much more; check it out at:

This looks like a really neat printer to me. I think they still have some work to do to tweak the best results from it, but mechanically it offers lots of advantages and is very elegant. I hope they do well with it.

Sexy form factor!  With any luck they will sell just enough so that someone sues them.

As long as they do not have an office in the USA they will be fine in the UK. Different laws.

They can sue them for products sold in the USA if they are found to breach a US patent.

To sue in the UK they would need to be in breach of a EU patent.

I think the general concensus is that it's much easier to get a patent in the US than the EU where we employ the likes of Einstein in our patent offices ????

Of course it's often not about the validity of the patent, but the cost of defending spurious claims from large/well funded companies.

No juries full of Texas hillbillies in the UK.

I was lucky; I got one of the Beta packages; and with the future expandability this "printer" is looking to be the best. Also my understanding is that they are going to give a £40 credit to off set the possibility of import fees too. I'll be using mine to get the second extruder head.

Wrong state, no hillbillies in Texas.

Funny though, I made a crack about there being lots of hills in Scotland and that post has disappeared?

This machine actually looks really cool, it's obviously meant for light duty use, but I really like the interchangeable heads. Never heard about the company before, but it looks like a very nice design :)

They make tools in the UK, and from what I've seen they made the body very ridged for future expansion with CNC head and such.

I think the main difference is that in Europe, you need to do your due diligence in order to get a patent filed, ie. you need to prove that your invention is a bona fide invention.
In the US, you just file the patent, and if you try to enforce it, your patent can be attacked in court, which will strike it down if it wasn't a bona fide invention. Since going to court is costly, most companies in the US just pay whatever licence fee is required of them, no matter how ridiculous the patent is.

Though from what I hear, there are legislative efforts ongoing to curb patent trolling - though they should change the way patents are filed, and much of the problem would be solved.

Patents are also supposed to be written in a way such that someone skilled in the field could reproduce it. This is part of the deal for getting a monopoly on something. Many inventors will openly say they don't understand the patents filled in there name once the patent writers have plied their craft.

Funny how this thread turned into a patent law discussion. Yes I do think patent legislation should be reformed, and not just in the US. Then again, maybe it's time to do away with it altogether.
