Title: uRuler
Post by: Jebnor on August 16, 2013, 12:05:00 am
Dave, you are making money on this right?  I know it's not overly expensive for PCBs to be made, but at the rate it's going, there may be many hours of mailing ahead.   Just let us know that you are making a living wage on this.  AU$15 for 5 is a great deal I think.

And now I wait for the delivery sometime in late september.

They cost about 70 cents in volume. Could be cheaper, but that's what I'm paying.
Postage would be AU$2.60 from Oz to US if sent as a letter (which you technically aren't allowed to do, but it works)
The problem is when you get hundreds of people who want one and you spend a couple of days stuffing envelopes.

For 2 boards sent to the US:
Material costs: cost of a board * quantity of boards + postage
Material costs: $0.7*2 + $2.60 = $4.
Remainder after material cost = $8.86 (after paypal etc fees) - $4 = $4.86.

Effective pay per hour before tax: boardsSentPerHour * $4.86

*Note that with 5 rulers for $15 the increased cost of $5 is less than the increased material cost of the extra boards.

Like I said in the other thread, costing is:
For a $10 order of two boards:
$8.86 after fees
-$2 for the boards
-$2.60 for the stamp
-$0.03 for envelope
-$0.02 for label

$4.21 profit for stuffing one envelope.
Worth it?  :-//
Then I pay 30% tax on that.

Suggestion for next time - do them  as a snappable panel, include space in the waste for an address label. No need for an an envelope - just label and post!

Suggestion for next time - do them  as a snappable panel, include space in the waste for an address label. No need for an an envelope - just label and post!

Several reasons why that's not desirable:
Snappable panel is not good for a ruler, you need clean routed edges.
You pay more for the board area.
It is very questionable whether Aust Post will accept that. It is not clear that you even allowed to send anything but dead tree in an envelope, depends who you ask. Such a board would raise a red flag instantly (no pun intended) at every step of the delivery process.

Mission creep.

Why not add a few SOIC>DIL & SSOP>DIL pads in an (underused) area, just for those emergencies.

Had something similar to this from a pcb supplier but unfortunately they put the drill holes in the middle of the ruler and not at one end like dave has done it ;)

Someone go and wake up Dave!  :scared: He is missing on uRuler purchases/donations.

When my 5 pcs of uRuler finally arrive, how can I proctect them from nasty fingers which etch away the gold and copper (through scratches) over time? Or should I wash my uRuler in IPA or acetone after each use? Use medical whipes? And put them in a silk pouch after each use?

I want the properties of uRuler to remain the same, not become stiff or anything, and still remain very straight on the edges.

Also like someone pointed out on youtube, is it safe to put precious uRulers loose in same envelope? What if they will be scratched? Has Dave done thorough testing on maybe five (5) uRulers in a same envelope and used steppermotors/servos to toss it around for 24h or something? Cheap Chinese pcb houses usually have some kind on shrinkwrap around pcbs, so they don't flop around and scratch each other in the package. Has Sagan thoroughly tested uRulers to be safe and suitable for long time use?

Then I pay 30% tax on that.

I do hope you're joking.

30% tax on $4.20 means you get to keep $2.94.

I'm assuming you can do at least 1 envelope a minute that'll be $176.4 per hour.

Well these are sort of donations to Dave, I think everyone understands that. In return we get something tangible, and this was my first crowdfunding campaign to contribute. I'm really happy to have waited this long for something worth it.  :-+

To be honest these would have costed around the same if not more if many people had ordered their own in small quantities, now Dave gets the profits for his own work, and people are happy to support him. Also this is like a practise for Dave into his new µcurrent product which he plans to crowdfund also on pozible. I'm really looking forward on that, provided the price stays affordable.

He might be leaving something out from his calculations, or just factors in hidden costs he might have forgotten, maybe he was planning to outsource the boring stuff of stuffing envelopes, which might have eaten up his whole profit. Or he just really hates stuffing envelopes, and no amount of money is going to make it worth to him.  :-DD

If you are going to make "$176.4 per hour" we want to see you suffer with those envelopes.  :-DD

Oh darn, I did not had money earlier today, and now when I have enough currency, "Your payment can not be completed because one of the recipients at this time can not receive payments" appeared. I don't know if it is paypalls problem, or something like that, or if there is limit. I really hope to get one, from the first time Dave showed these "exclusive goodies", so handy looking, no need for multiple size sheets and tables anymore, and is geeky most importantly.

There are many ways to to think about it, we could say this is small part of the time spent building his fan base and making videos over his whole time with the blog. But Dave has addressed he does this for fun, or atleast did in the beginning. Someone interested should calculate how much that makes if he has worked full time with his blog for a while now?

I'm actually thinking of getting another 5 set of rulers, because I don't know if these are going to be available in the future. 5 rulers for 3$ each, against all the hundreds of episodes I have watched, some episode I've watched again because they make more sense the more I watch his videos. All the information I've learned the funny way from Dave talking and showing stuff, where I live education is free(high taxes) , but for Dave teaching stuff it's worth to pay.

Sometimes I watch episodes of Eevblog instead of some super popular primetime TV shows, because Dave is real and I can learn stuff, or just have fun watching, most of primetime popular TV shows are just the same thing over and over again and in the end there is just emptyness.

Last I checked, most humans in the world didn't have "a regular job" that paid, say, an hourly wage for "full time" work. Try telling a farmer that s/he shouldn't consider the return vs time of a project.

I know most farmers do it for fun, it is their way of living. If they didn't have their way of living, what would they do? European union pays royalties for the land they own, sometimes it's better to actually do nothing and get paid more.

But measuring it in dollars per hour makes no sense when you spend most hours not doing it. The numbers are completely incomparable to any other $/hr number. Criticizing someone for complaining about doing something by pointing out what it's worth in $/hr is dumb, the number doesn't mean anything.
Title: Re: uRuler

You also have to factor the time spent as ancillary, like going out to buy the envelopes and the time it takes to go drop them off at the post office ( Au post is like ours and will bend you over without lube if they have to come collect) and to bundle them per country ( postal rules for bulk mail, even if they just whip the rubber bands off and toss them in a sorter right there) as well as the fuel costs and such. He also has to eat, drink and so what comes naturally as a result, as well as seal these envelopes. Stuffing much more than 200 envelopes an hour is not easy, you can do it for the first hour but after that the overheads start to accumulate. As well the labels will be time consuming, along with the stamps unless he is using a self adhesive one.

Reminds me, anybody want to see a tear down of a postal franking machine? The one at work went out of use as they were obsoleted supplies wise, so it is now on a shelf waiting for me to take the camera to it. Now we just buy boxes of stamps at the local post office 50m away or just get them to frank.

You know, while several other members are giving their $.02, or pissing and moaning about your profits vs. workload and how happy YOU should be to be doing this for us, I'd just like to say:

Dave,

Thanks for CHOOSING to have another batch of rulers made, I've wanted to snag one since the first time I saw them, and now I have 5.  :-+

Thanks for CHOOSING to offer them so reasonably priced, shipping included.

Thanks for CHOOSING to stuff these into envelopes and mail them to all of us.  My Grandpa was a mailer, and I've stuffed enough envelopes to know that a even few hundred STILL would have been a pain in the ass, much less the volume you now face.  Take your time, I'll wait patiently.

You see, people, Dave knew this was going to be a pain and take time away from producing content (even before the #s went sky high) and he CHOSE to do it for us anyway.  Maybe some of you should just accept the fact that somebody has gone out of their way to do something nice for you and shut up.  Dave, I'll gladly wait to be the last batch shipped if need be, I appreciate what you are doing for us.  THANKS!

In retrospect, I should have probably told you that you suck so that Citizen doesn't think I'm on the payroll...  :-DD

For bulk mailings, A4 label sheets in a laser printer are the  quickest, easiest & cheapest. Even ancient MS Word will merge from a CSV file to make labels this way.

Label printers really score for the odd 1-off or small quantity, for bulk mailings they are slow and expensive.

For those that begrudge Dave a small "profit" for his troubles (which doesn't  amount to a huge amount considering all the time and effort involved), Dave has been kind enough to post the Gerber files for the ruler.  You can download the files and have them made at virtually any fab house.

Of course the price for a small quantity will be much more than Dave charges.  Dave's providing a service to keep the cost low for everybody.

Dave,

Don't you have temp labor offices there?  Or the Ozzie version of Craigslist?  Seems like you could hire a temp for a week or two (or a couple of out-of-work types looking to make a few bucks) and get some envelopes stuffed?

Or has the insanity of government made hiring labor so onerous that it's not feasible?

Congrats on the success :)

I am baffled by people who grudge anyone making a profit.  I ordered, IIRC, 5 uRulers.  I think Dave underpriced them... I'd have happily paid more.

Guess what my professional hourly contract rate used to be...
I'd rather be making content than stuffing envelopes.
There is more important things in life than money.
I did this on impulse thinking I'd keep a few hundred people happy with rulers who have asked for them, now it's in the thousands and doesn't look like being a small bit of satisfying fun any more.
But hey, that's my problem, not yours.

I have some suggestions:
1/ Turn it into fun and content, by live streaming the whole exercise of envelope stuffing and chatting to us the whole time.
2/ Pay a few school kids a few bucks to do the stuffing for you... Pity Sagan's still a bit young to stuff envelopes. ;)

This is now well into the amount where it would make sense to hire a lettershop service. Apart from being able to print labels and stuff envelopes and seal them far quicker than you ever could, you can also use their postage meter and possibly profit from the discount they have with the post office.

Where I am from, this is often offered by workshops for the handicapped/disabled, so there is also social value in doing so. Perhaps there are similar facilities in Australia.

Having done bulk mailing in the past, doing 2k of envelopes is hard. You spend a long time just getting set up with one table for blank boxed envelopes, one for the stuffing and a third to pack the sealed ones in. Same again for the labelling and placing the stamps. We were using 5 people to do this, sending out about 10k of envelopes and this took a week of work from the initial printing of the inserts to the final trip to the main post office to do the bulk delivery in bags.

Good thing we already have many dodgy campaigns with wonderful excuses to use incase of a late delivery...  not that Dave would ever do such a thing.  ^-^

One thing to take from the playbook of mu thermal:

Hey, Dave. I know there are a lot of rulers and I know you haven't all day.  If there are way too many rulers to get out by the estimated time frame, no worries.  I know a bit nerdy/geeky, but if on my order you're still able to autograph both (you can match it up to my credentials here), I'd be happy to wait longer if necessary.  That way you can still get to all those other envelopes.  I'll be busy in the meantime with my calculus class.

Keep taking them apart! (:

Maybe Dave could work with one of the companies that batch manufactures PCBs, so that they manufacture the circuit boards and ship them directly to the project supporters. That way Dave doesn't have to be stuffing envelopes for forever.
Title: Re: uRuler
Post by: Guppzor on August 20, 2013, 05:15:15 am
The only hope in hell of getting an autographed ruler would be to have the signature printed on them as part of the silkscreen. If one person asks for a favour... well one leads to another, and another, and another... This very Pozible campaign demonstrates exactly that. A few people asked Dave for the chance to buy a ruler or two so he started the campaign, now it has turned in to a bit of a monster.

I'm happy to wait for my rulers (yes, I am part of the monster) if things turn out to be unmanagable in the timeframe originally provided.

P.S. The next AmpHour should be interesting...  :scared:

You can't get these rulers batch made (i.e. as part of a snap out panel), they need to be fully routed to get the smooth edges.

The idea would not be to use them for batching to reduce the price, just to see if you could get them to manufacture the boards(without batching), give them a list of addresses, and have them deal with shipping out the boards. I'd imagine it would not be terribly hard for them because a lot of them already have a system set where they send 3-5 boards to many different people.

But, you definitely know more about this than I do.

BTW, could deal be made with post office to get cheaper shipping and no need to lick so many stamps? Like we have envelopes printed with"<company> will pay postage" where stamp would be. If address and "stamp" were just printed to envelope, job would be two times faster and easier.

Here you can drop at the post office with a box of envelopes, pay the postage and they will print the "stamps" on the envelopes using a specific machine...

Dave, I hope you checked with the post office that it's ok to send PCBs as letters (some may classify that stuff as parcel)... anyway, that's "printed matter" after all, just on fiberglass instead of cellulose fiber :)

Time to put the entire family to work  ;). Maybe you can make a video of the sweatshop afterwards  ;D

:-+ Having done 1000+ CDs with instructions in the post multiple times, it should not be too bad.
Trick is to print the labels separately for the 2 and 5 rulers.  This saves you from having to use your brain when stuffing the envelopes.  Stuff all the 2 ruler and then the 5 ruler envelopes.  Then stick on the appropriate labels.  We often scab a few mail bags from the post office before hand. (For some reason most mail bags in Ireland have "Royal mail" on them, complements of those detained at Her Majesty's pleasure.)  When drop the lot at the local post office and get them to frank them.  No extra charge once your have 500+.  Now, the problem with this is they have sat for a few days in a back room before they got around to doing them.  If we want them to go fast we stamp them ourselves and drive around to a few post boxes, filling them up.  The reason for going to post boxes, rather than directly to the post office is a very old law (which may well be the same in Oz) which I believe states the boxes must be emptied the letters processed each night.  There is no such requirement for bags left at the post office.

The success of this campaign says a lot about the general state of availability of decent rulers. It's quite hard to find a good one these days - especially at that price. The PCB-centric gauges and tables are just icing on the cake.

You can change it at any time.  I assume Dave will get all of the addresses at the close of the project.

Pozible's website is very confusing, though.  There is no Addressee field for shipping.  I guess it is just going to use the user's login name.  Naturally I didn't use my full name as my login.  I'm sure I'll get it still.

Also, the "Notifications & Preferences" options couldn't be more confusing.  The options of "Off" or "On" are not clear at all.  What does "Do not share my email address with the projects I support == Off" mean, exactly?  WTF?

What worries me more is that there is no field for city, but mandatory fields for suburb and state, both of which are not used here. So where do I put my city? I ended up putting it in the suburb field, but it still doesn't feel good...
Title: Re: uRuler
Post by: alm on August 20, 2013, 06:21:17 pm
City instead of suburb should be fine, as long as it ends up in approximately the correct order the postal service will likely figure it out.

It's a dumb idea to force people to use your local address format if you're aiming for an international audience. Just study the address formats used across the world and you'll quickly come to the conclusion that the only viable way is to provide address line 1 to n. Countries may put street numbers before or after the street, street numbers may not actually be just numbers, some addresses use building names instead of numbers, some countries require a state, province or territory, some countries require some sort of post office number in addition to city and postal code, some require locality, the list goes on. Just let people format their own addresses, then at least half of them should be able to get it right ;). You'd be surprised how many people have trouble spelling their own name.

Rather than labels might be worth investigating a second hand high speed envelope addressing printer from Ebay etc. If it printed the address and the number of rulers for that order on the envelopes then a quick glance would tell you how many rulers to stick in that envelope (or just split it into a 2 ruler run/5 ruler run) Then get someone to whizz them through a franking machine, or can you buy electronic postage in Australia?. Would be a LOT quicker than all that peeling and sticking. Sell printer back on EBay when done or do a tear down of it :-)

Some general purpose printers also do envelopes. Though you would need one that can handle many envelopes at a time.

I wonder what the costs would be to have a commercial printing facility print the address on envelopes.

Yeah I couldn't help but buy 5 rulers... Does that make us all "supporters" now?

P.S. : Dave I'll be that guy in Texas with the German last name where you'll see it and "WTF?" and spend a few minutes trying to figure out how it is pronounced. And yes there's actually more people with that last name. The city in which I grew up (population about 300k) had 6 people in the phone book with that last name that were not related to me. There's also a linux kernel developer with my name that's not me and a guy at Microsoft with my same name. He was a real dick by the way. He used to send me nasty e-mails when people would accidentally sent him e-mails that were meant for me... Like it was my fault we had the same name. Screw him. He still works for MS and I don't any more.

His feet would probably be up, but drinking a beer (or other beverage of his choice) would require consciousness...

Maybe even look into the possibility of having a filled out CN22 printed on the envelope at the same time? It could prevent any customs problems in the recipients' countries.

Anyway, great work, I'm looking forward to receiving my rulers.

I just tore apart an envelope printer, which had a bad clutch inside from a couple of years of use. Pain to use and keep feeding correctly, but it sure did print a lot of envelopes. Labels are a better bet, and I can even arrange stuffing of envelopes for about $50 per 1000 items, postage works out to be about $2 per item international.

I ship a lot of my Tindie orders internationally, and at least here in the states the post office has finally got their act together- you can simply whack the name/address into online form, click a few boxes for product description and it spits out a label with prepaid shipping and customs info all in one. Slap it on, then schlep to the post office to hand it in in person. (The last part still sucks, but not having separate postage and customs helps a lot). That's of course me being too cheap to use third party service like endicia or stamps.com. I wonder if Australia has their equivalents..

Maybe Octopart Electronic PCB (cheatsheet) can be an inspiration for Dave if he wants to improve his current one before making, or for his next version uRuler 2.0 .  The footprint idea for various type of packaging would be good for the reverse side of Dave uRuler.   Dave logo maybe become smaller as a result.

It occurs to me that here we have a project which doesn't just have a prototype but is actually production proven, and in the words of someone I can't recall, all that's needed is to click the button on the manufacturers website and hey presto!  :-+

Yet here we are with another delay, on top of the previous speed bumps. Completely unforeseen, etc. Were it not Dave doing this I suspect there would be elements of 'yeah, yeah, heard that one before' and perhaps a posting in this very topic.

Don't forget that this is as simple as it could be: a trivial PCB without any components whatsoever. 95% of the posters here could have run one off themselves, or panelled the gerber onto their next PCB.

Please note that I am not trying to diss Dave or his ruler or this round of crowdfunding. What I am trying to do is point out that an apparently simple-as-can-be project can suffer this kind of stuff, and we should bear that in mind when a much more complex project seems to be a straight-up scam.
Title: Re: uRuler
Post by: MacAttak on September 05, 2013, 09:18:55 pm
I agree with that, and try to give people a lot of leeway when it comes to that.

However, there is one aspect that sets this apart from 90% or more of those crowdfunded projects. Dave is being exceptionally transparent. He is informing us immediately when something happens. No delays. No reluctance to share.

Poorly-run campaigns almost never do that. They go silent for long periods of time, or don't admit to having problems until they can't hide them any longer.

And I think the results of both approaches is plainly obvious here - nobody is giving Dave any shit about it, while like you said if it was another project there might be a lot of complaining already.

As you say, Dave is exceptionally transparent, so he is not the norm for any project really. Plus he's been there, done it, and even flogs the T-shirts now. By definition, a crowd sourced project developer probably isn't a particularly astute businessman or project manager, so I wouldn't necessarily panic at long(ish) silence. Indeed, I backed Leap Motion and they went so quiet I forgot I'd money tied up in them :)

And look at the watch chap: he is quite mouthy and seems to be reasonably transparent. It is all rubbish, of course, but "my PCB order is too big a panel for the globally shipping PCB fab to manage" would have us in stitches here making up his next excuse for him.

Someone just said they received an empty sealed envelope!  :-//

I find it's best to bag items and then usually tape the bag to the addressed paper insert when I send things in envelopes.  That way if it does get torn there is at least a chance the contents will remain with the envelope or be returned to it.

Sorting machines can really do a number if they catch an edge on something in an envelope.  In some sorting warehouse here in NZ they are probably still picking up LEDs from one of my envelopes that got bit.

I guess with the international orders you'll have to have a customs declaration since it's not printed material, so probably won't get run through an automatic machine anyway but join the parcel conveyor.

Well, technically it IS printed material, as in Printed Circuit Board  ;D
But the customs legislation in my country clearly exempt from import duties only printed material "on paper"... not that a couple of PCBs in a paper envelope would be flagged for customs inspection anyway.

To protect stuff like this, I generally stick it to some thin card and fold in half. forming a liner in the envelope.

A tested way from Ian at DangerousPrototypes is to do the following:

http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/How_to_mail_PCBs (http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/How_to_mail_PCBs)

Basically tape the PCB inside the envelope, then it cannot move, tear the envelope or slide out. I have received a few boards from him like that before, never had a problem. It also helps to have a stiffer card inside to help the envelope maintain shape when it goes through the various sorting machines.

PRINTED Circuit Board  ;D

Clearly the envelope on it's own isn't going to work. Glad I caught this on the 200 run and not 2000
Options are a plastic bag inside the envelope, taped to folded card (probably too much work at the mailing house for 2000+), or a cardboard photo mailer.
Title: Re: uRuler
Post by: Towger on September 20, 2013, 10:40:10 am
I would just try for a slightly higher quality (heaver paper weight) envelope, a cardboard mailer could push the postage up a good bit.
Just one set escaping out of 200+ is .5%, it would be cheaper to just have to resend them again.

Yes, most likely. There is the time hassle too though.
Doing some research now and it seems the "pocket" envelopes with the opening on the end are heavier weight and designed for heavier materials.
One of those with maybe a plastic bag holding the rulers inside should do the trick I think.
The cardboard photo mailer would be classified as a large letter instead of standard.

Hi Dave,

I think that another option is buy envelopes with a transparent window, write the address in an A4 sheet, and then glue the rulers to the sheet.
You add the step of fold the sheet, put the sheet folded in the envelop is more difficult, but you save the step of stick the address label to the envelope. Maybe, glue the rulers to the sheet is more difficult that glue it together but, if the rulers are in the right place, they can help to fold the sheet.

Another advantage of this system is that you can add some message for the supporter.

It's only an idea.

Best regards,

uU.

Title: Re: uRuler
Post by: samgab on September 20, 2013, 11:29:53 pm
I'd make an A4 sheet with some info on it, a bit of a blurb about the ruler or whatever, then tape the ruler stack to the A4 sheet of paper, fold it in thirds (the usual fold for A4 paper in a DLE envelope), and then put that in the envelope. That way the folded paper is protecting the envelope somewhat, and holding the rulers in place within. It wouldn't be a great deal of extra work either, although any solution is going to be SOME extra work and thus cost...
Title: Re: uRuler
Post by: uUser on September 21, 2013, 12:17:11 am
samgab,

My idea it's like yours, I only don't know if the stack its a good idea. Maybe the stack it's too heavy and it can unstick from the sheet. Also the stack it's to thick and it can tear the envelop.

Regards,

uU

Cut pieces of card stock to about the size of the envelope interior. Make two vertical slits in the middle and pass the ruler through the slits so that it's held in compression. Add a bit of clear tape to prevent shifting. If you build a small jig you can probably do this quickly.

Couple thoughts come to mind:

1) Since a fulfillment house is handling the envelope closing, can you use a standard design envelope without the opening near the flap?  (I think you went with the double flap version to save the effort of peeling off the self-adhesive protection strip.)

2) In the USA, a normal business envelope is identified as a #10 size, and is available in tyvek as well as paper.  A  tyvek envelope should be handled by the fulfillment house machinery just like a paper envelope in terms of printing directly on it, etc. but it is much stronger than a paper envelope. http://www.amazon.com/Quality-Park-Lightweight-Anti-Microbial-R2010/dp/B004NYB7QA (http://www.amazon.com/Quality-Park-Lightweight-Anti-Microbial-R2010/dp/B004NYB7QA) is one example. I doubt very many rulers will punch through tyvek, although given enough mishandling by the various post offices involved, I suppose it's possible that some small percentage will fail, but those can be handled on a replacement basis.

Hence, a standard #10 envelope (whatever the Australian equivalent is)  but tyvek not paper would seem to address both your problems and should be well within the fulfillment house's machinery capabilities.  Tyvek is a bit more expensive than paper but it avoids the need for a bag and associated labor which I suspect more than offsets the increased envelope price.

If the fulfillment house would do it at the same price and if the envelope price is similar, I would probably go with an end loaded tyvek envelope.

Hello Dave,

Long time supporter here.

I've signed up on the forum today in hopes of getting in contact with you regarding the uRuler.

My dad is an EEVBlog Fanatic and he goes on about your videos whenever I see him. I purchase him your shirts as gifts whenever his birthday and christmas rolls around and he absolutely loves having them.

Purchasing some rulers for him was a no brainer.

Today I received the familiar envelope from the packaging video a few days ago only to find it perfectly sealed with nothing inside.

The envelope shows no signs of tampering and arrived completely empty.

I purchased 2 rulers and my name is Adrian Acosta.

Is there anything you can do for me? It would be a huge shame for my dad if I can't give him the rulers.

Thank you for taking the time to do this for all of us.

Adrian

Tyvek is what those FedEx envelopes use, the ones that look like they are made of some kind of fiber that you can't tear.

It's also used as a moisture barrier in some new home constructions. It allows water vapor but not liquid water

Also commonly used in wrist bands at clubs and events, because it doesn't tear.

Also used to make the disposable bunny suits used in Hazmat areas like chip and hard drive manufacturing plants. You can tear it, but normally that requires a lot more than the average person can deliver without a lever.

Yep, 5 rulers. It would have been in the first batch that was sent out.

I guess the pigeon decided it was too hot up here and turned around. Mail from Sydney to Cairns normally only takes 3 days.

Never mind. I actually only pledged because I didn't think you would get too many takers and would have just donated if I'd realised that was an option. Just keep a spare around and I'll come and visit you next time I'm in Sydney. :)

Then again, they may still turn up.

I whould also like to buy few of this uRulers, I've registred to the EEVblog Shop but there is not such item to buy there. It whould be good that you add uRuler to EEVblog shop, and after getting desired number of orders you can send them. I whould buy couple of them, they look good and useful.

Dave, at the end, are you satisfied with this campaign? Did you get what you wanted?

What I "wanted" was to simply make a small group of people happy who kept asking for a uRuler. And also it was a good opportunity to try out crowd sourcing via Pozible to test the whole mechanism.
The fact that it went gangbusters surprised me and added extra issues I did not intent.

So, yes, satisfied, and it gave some people what they wanted, and I learned a lot out about, and fixed a lot of issues with both Pozible, PayPal, and shipping.

So, having survived the experience are you likely to take what you learned and try another crowdfunding campaign?  Or is once enough?

I'd do it again.

Hey there,

I am currently planning on doing a small batch of µRulers for the german people.

Is there any way to get the full gerbers including the eevblog slogan on the back and would it okay for you, Dave, when I do the batch exactly the same as you did with your slogans on it?

I will also use pcbcart as fab, 0,5mm with red soldermask and white silkscreen. Pricing will be below 2 euros per Ruler and 2 additional euros for shipping, I will send a minimum of 5 rulers per order and will start to take orders in about 2 weeks. This will be a private project - I will not make any revenue by this (except maybe 5 free rulers for me).

Thanks!

Matthias

Edit: Dave, did you have some kind of deal with pcbcart for the 4 and 5 mil traces/spacing? Would be very nice if they would do them without charging any extra. Asked them too about this.

I'm getting the feeling that my mailing house sent them all to another mailing house in Sweden!
That would explain why Sweden got them first (and no one else yet), and also the delay.

Mine has arrived, although it may have arrived earlier as I didn't check the mail box yesterday.

Just out of curiosity Dave, is it possible to post a by country count of people who ordered? I'm intrigued with how popular this site is within the Asian regions.

Wouldn't surprise me, sending one package to Sweden to be broken up across the Euro-Region would be cheaper then individual postage costs.

Dave browsed quickly through addresses in one of the videos, all he showed was countries and cities/regions. I will probably have only µRulers in this city when they arrive.

I hope next project will ship from singapore or hongkong with tracking number since it doesn't cost almost anything extra at all. I would happily pay 1$-2$ extra for ability to track things.

I'm pretty certain they at least printed the envelopes in oz!, and most likely stuffed them too, but I'm getting the vibe that the actual mailing was not done by regular Aust post.
Heck, if I pop them in the local post box, they get delivered overseas in only a few days, maybe a week tops for some countries.

If a large part of the recipients are in Europe, it may very well be cheaper to pay low rates within Europe and pay extra for the lower number of NZ/Asian recipients. I wouldn't expect postage from SE to America to be particularly cheap, though. If they outsourced this to a company doing a lot of international mail, then they may very well have negotiated a low bulk rate with postal services in whatever country offers the lowest rate. Sending mail at the lowest possible rate can lead to some interesting mail routing.

Yes, perhaps. There could be separate mailing houses for the US/Canada and other regions as well. But still, 16 days is getting beyond acceptable. I could have spent 5 days packing them myself, and then 5 days via Australia Post and almost everyone worldwide would have had them by now. I paid $2.28 in bulk postage for each one compared to OzPost's single standard international rate of $2.60. Still, I was under the impression that they would all be lodged with Australia Post. I would have happily paid the $2.60 if it didn't mean this delay. I'm not very happy about this whole thing.

I think at german customs only small-minded bumptious nah, I'm not gonna continue.
Point is, they are adhereing exaclty to the law, by each word. If a device has no CE it can't enter the country. But they would never check if that CE sign is really appropriate. I have even heard of a case where someone had to pay customs for a "forgotten at holiday hotel" videocamera where the hotel sent it in by mail.  |O

Worst part is; German Customs do not even trust the CN22 Declaration of contents anymore. They demand that you show them the confirmation of the moneytransfer, ie Paypal excerpt or bank statement. This of course means that your packet or parcel does NOT arrive at home anymore, but instead you have to go to customs to pick it up, after waiting in line for at least an hour (I was once there when it was empty, no one else, just me, still had to wait 50 minutes)

I am curious how this will affect the uRulers. Because I am sure that there was not Declaration of contents from Dave, also no Invoice on, or in the envelopes. Might even go back to dave, or it will land in court. We'll see..

@Dave : Yo did throw in a CE sign somewhere on the uRuler, didn't you ?

Just wanted to ask if anyone thought about the CN22 Declaration? (Didn't see it on the envelope pictures on twitter)
I think some countries may even reject postage without that declaration.
In Germany customs should "normally" forward a CN22 declared envelope without problems to you if its declared worth is below 22 euros and they don't have any indications that the declared worth is not correct. Even this process takes 3-6 weeks from australia to germany, sending from germany to australia is a bit faster.

If you missed the CN22 declaration, I think every german recipient will be notfied by customs and need to declare whats in the envelope. This adds about 1-2 weeks.
I don't know how other countries handle that, but I think it is basically the same procedure (but maybe they have faster customs?).

If they sent it from sweden, everything ist fine, no need for CN22 or anything-custom-related within the EU. But then the problem exists for non-EU countries.
But I don't think they send a whole bounch of Rulers from Australia to Sweden, because that add a big problem: tax and duty. They would easily exceed the free boundaries and have to pay $$$ tax/duties for importing uRulers.
It should be much cheaper to send it from china/singapur/taiwan directly to every recipient in the world than paying taxes and duties for an import of 1000 rulers or so.
I mean, think about it, sending from these countries to any country in the world costs nearly nothing and you don't need to pay taxes/duties (that's up to the recipient, but in this case it should be no problem bacause it is below the free boundary for every recipient).  That's probably what they did.

I think that's only true if your envelope does not contain any goods.
(just checked that on the hompage of german post; it says clearly that you need to have a CN22 declaration if you send goods as letter mail in an non-EU country.)
Maybe customs do not recognizes that there are uRulers in it, but you used special envelopes (afaik) and that is probably obvious.

But despite that it seem that it works without it, at least in sweden.

I think that's only true if your envelope does not contain any goods.

Not so in Australia.
It is only recommended that it not contain material goods, it is not a condition of carry.
Whatever fits within the 50g weight limit and the letter size limit 5mm thickness (+L +W), gets treated as a letter.

From where do you have that?
Australia Post says basically the same as german post on their website:
Letters -> "No Extra Cover, containing written correspondence or documents only" -> "No customs documentation required"
Letters -> "No Extra Cover, containing items valued at no more than $500"  -> " CN22 Customs Douane (Green Form)".
(http://auspost.com.au/parcels-mail/country-customs-regulations.html (http://auspost.com.au/parcels-mail/country-customs-regulations.html) -> Which customs form do you need?)

So I think you should have added CN22s.

Could it be that they put the swedish postage stamps on the letters even though they didn't travel trough sweden?

I'd suspect that's the case.  From my limited understanding of how (the quite complicated) international mail systems work, it's a bit like telephone network termination charging, the originating mailer sells postage and keeps everything they collect, the terminating mailer "bills" the originating mailer a termination rate for their mail.

That source to destination terminal rate is set I think by the UPU (in lieu of private agreements), based on relative mail volumes and standard prices determined by the UPU.

So my guess is that Swedish Post has a better terminal rate than Australia Post generally speaking (higher volumes I suppose), and so the postage is "sold" by Swedish Post at a cheaper price since they have a lower termination rate - it doesn't matter how it actually arrives in the terminating region (after all mail may go through many countries on it's way).

I think Swiss Post probably has the same sort of operation, I've received packages marked Swiss Post before that certainly wouldn't have come from Switzerland :)

You know Dave, I'm a very impatient person. When I order something online, I want instant gratification. And the micro ruler is one of the longest times I have waited for anything. But at no point have I been the slightest bit impatient. It all boils down to communication. Your updates are invaluable, and you are teaching us all good lessons about how to handle large scale crowd funded projects. Keep up the good work, and don't worry about the delays. We are learning more from your troubles.

Some of my small amateur radio related electronic kits fit into a padded envelope (US type 000, a bit smaller than an A5 sheet for those of the metric persuasion) and I sell quite a few to European customers.  Typical value is US$ 25.  These kits go with a CN22 customs form and used to be delivered in Germany in about two weeks from shipment, sometimes as fast as 10 days.

Beginning a year or so ago, these small envelopes shipped to Germany have run 30-60 days delivery. Likewise with larger kits that ship in a cardboard box but are sent "first class parcel" with the CN 22 customs declaration.

Sweden has the fastest delivery, with Norway and Finland being similar. I've had kits in the padded envelopes delivered on a Friday following Monday shipping to Sweden. UK delivery used to be as fast as Sweden, but has become slower - still better than Germany.

I've also heard reports from friends in the ham radio kit business that German customs is rejecting some shipments that do not have the CE approval mark.  So far, I haven't run into that.

Italy is a huge problem, and before I accept an order for delivery by postal service to Italy, my customer must agree that either (a) the package is shipped with insurance [expensive]; or (b) risk of loss is upon the customer.  Likewise with Russia.  Chances of a package being delivered in either Italy or Russia is < 50%.

Well, as mine will be delivered by that paragon of virtue, promptness and honesty, said being the South African Post Office, I have no worries, it will take 6 weeks or so, like any other letter international or domestic.

You have to admit it takes work to have an organisation that went on a go slow and noone noticed........ ;)

But they do have some nice customer facing people, I have met a few that are nice to meet across the counters.

Very well put. I feel the same. It's proving to be educational for everyone, and in fact entertaining although I do feel for Dave as obstacle after obstacle is thrown at him. It's not the end of the world if my rulers are late, or even don't arrive at all, it's not like he isn't trying his best!

That's the thing. If it was only a few hundred people tops, as I originally thought, everyone would have had them long ago. Because there wouldn't have been the extra 3 week delay on the manufacture, and then I would have packed and shipped them all myself via Australia post. Barring the missing/torn envelope fiasco, most Australian backers got their rulers ages ago.

Well the way I see it was it is a learning experience for 4 separate parties. Pozzible learned what it was like to have a massively successful campaign, you learned about the hassles of managing a massively successful campaign, your mailing service learned what it was like to ship a multinational campaign, and we learned that hey, not everything is in the control of the campaign owner, but by providing good feedback to the supporters nobody got upset.

I think next time Dave should choose a person per country and ship them the rulers, envelopes and the cards along with the country recipients, and then farm it out to a distributed network. The remote packer pays the postage for the area and posts them, and this can be regarded as a contribution to the forum to keep Sagan with a roof over his head.

Hey Dave,

Would it be okay with you to send the Gerber files to a PCB manufacturer for our own uses (I'm thinking OSHPark in the U.S. to get single [ok, 3 min.] unit-quantities)?

If so, could you take a moment to enumerate the file naming convention to make this happen?

Thanks a million!

That is a nice idea, but it could spell trouble in terms of customs fees, because the main shipment to some countries for sure will not be accepted to be below the tax free value.

That is not as easy as it sounds. There are 58 counties!
Even if I did the major countries I'd have to liaise with (and trust) a few dozen people to send these things out.

Considering sellers in China seem to be able to post stuff out worldwide fpr peanuts,  maybe the ideal solution is to get someone there to collect from PCBcart and ship. Obviously the tricky part is finding a reliable contact to do it.

That would be the best way to send them. They can print customs forms directly on the envelope, unlike Dave's problems with them and Ozzie post offices. Plus, no problems adding a China Export sticker on to each ruler going to Germany.

Taobao agents sometimes can offer drop shipping services, get the stuff shipped to their warehouse probably in Shenzhen, they can pack and send for a fee.  I currently use bhiner.com for my Taobao'ing needs, not the cheapest but their English at their customer service email is very good (for China), and I believe they can do drop shipping.

Hi,

I live in the UK.

I received my rulers today. Thanks, Dave.  :)

Well packaged, with a good strong envelope. The glue attaching the rulers to the card was just strong enough to keep them in place  in transit, but easy to remove and leaves no marks.

It has a Swedish post mark similar to the one in the photo on the blog.

Cheers.

Just arrived here in Berlin Germany. And yes, it was posted from Malmo Sweden. Priority A mail, whatever that means.

Also the rulers were not taped down, but gunked. That kind of rubbery stuff used in magazines to stick goodies into them. Easy to remove.

And, no problems or hassle with customs, as it is all EU.

I have not received my package here in Sweden. I guess that filling in "State/Province/Region" may have messed things up as we don't use that info in our postage system. Or it's just stuck somewhere in the country.

They have very poor service for private customers, we are just a fraction of the sales and are treated like tumors. On the other hand they have excellent service and prices for companies.

Check this out:
One of my uRulers does not have the additional hole at the 1 inch mark. (Germany, Berlin)
How did that happen ?
Did one from the first (Australian Batch) slip in ?

There are following differences:
While the extra hole ones have a slight curvature, the non extra hole ruler is straight, so it can lie flat on a table.
While the extra hole ones are a little bit rough along the CM side, the non extra hole ruler is similarly smooth on both measurement edges. But the difference is really slight.

Also:
Can anyone explain all the Tables on the uRuler ? I don't really get all of them.

So there are holes from 0.4mm to 2.0mm , so you can check if your THT components would fit a specific hole.
There are example traces from 5 mil to 20 mil, so you can see how wide they are. (It would be nice to have this on the border of the ruler so you can compare it to traces on a PCB)
There are some SMD-IC leg separation gauges, from 0.4mm to 0.8mm

Then there are many tables:
From left to right
oz - µm -> How much (in oz weight) copper is used on a size ?? PCB with a cladding of µm thikness.. (How big is the reference Board for this ? 1meter x 1 meter ? )
SMD footprints -> OK, size diagram including 4 examples. including new and (old) SMD size codes. What does the POW column mean ?
mil - µm -> OK, pretty straightforward.
mm - inch formula -> OK, know that from the top of my head, but it's nice to have.
Spacing - V - int - mask - bare -> Whats this ? minimal spacing for isolation ?  int - internal layer / mask - top layer with mask / bare - top layer no mask  I guess ? What is (> 3km ) ? 3 kilometers ?
Max A SMOBC @ 0.5 oz -> WTF ? I have no idea what this is about ?
Max A SMOBC @ 1.0 oz -> WTF ? I have no idea what this is about ?
Via Amps -> Nice, you just recently posted a video on this :)
SQ PIN to DIA mm -> Again, I have no idea what this is about ? Inner surface area of a via maybe ?
EIA SMD TANTALUM -> Nope, does not ring a bell...

So if anyone knows what these tables depict, we should throw together a users guide.
I guess it's easier to use the tables once you know what they are about..

Nothing in Texas yet. I checked at a little before 3:00PM but I suppose the mail carrier could be late I had no other mail either.
But that's normal also, I sometimes go a few days with nothing, so in most cases I check once every week or every other week.

So it nearly the same amount of time for the rulers to arrive to NZ directly as it did for them to be routed and come to the US through NZ.

oz - µm -> How much (in oz weight) copper is used on a size ?? PCB with a cladding of µm thikness.. (How big is the reference Board for this ? 1meter x 1 meter ? )

Ounces per square foot, as already mentioned - it's the other common way to express the cladding thickness.

Quote
SMD footprints -> OK, size diagram including 4 examples. including new and (old) SMD size codes. What does the POW column mean ?

Guessing at this one, but typical power ratings in watts for those footprints?

Quote
Max A SMOBC @ 0.5 oz -> WTF ? I have no idea what this is about ?
Max A SMOBC @ 1.0 oz -> WTF ? I have no idea what this is about ?

Current-carrying capacity of traces in 0.5 / 1 oz thick copper - the figures are trace width in mils, amps per ten/five/one degree rise above ambient temperature, and (I think) milliohms per inch of trace length.  SMOBC = Solder Mask Over Bare Copper.

Quote
SQ PIN to DIA mm -> Again, I have no idea what this is about ? Inner surface area of a via maybe ?

Conversion between the size of a square pin and its bounding circle (-> the size of a hole to accommodate it).

Quote
EIA SMD TANTALUM -> Nope, does not ring a bell…

Standard case sizes of SMD tantalum caps.

Flexibility          Flexible 0.6 mm thick         Stiff 1.5 mm thick
Content           Mostly charts                     Mostly component footprints

It was a promotional item for the Open Hardware Summit! Would be pretty stupid to put one in the conference goodie bag without promotional stuff on it.
BTW, the 2nd side was free (the original one was only single sided) and I had no time to add any other technical stuff to the bottom, so I just whacked on my web address and youtube channel name.
I did not redesign it for the Pozible campaign because it was never supposed to be this big, it was only for those who were asking for one, and I didn't want to put any more work into than I had too at the time.
It's 0.5mm BTW.

I know - they're both pretty much promotional.  I was just playing around, no criticism intended.

My cheap caliper read 0.57, so I rounded up.

Mine do.  They may have been rolled by some piece of postal equipment, or maybe there is just a natural curvature to the pcb material.

Mine do.  They may have been rolled by some piece of postal equipment, or maybe there is just a natural curvature to the pcb material.

My rulers also have a slight curvature - all five of them.

The conclusion must be that it is natural curvature of the pcb material, otherwise you would have three curving one way, and the other two (on the other side of the card insert) curving the other way.

That is most likely caused by the dreaded automated sorting machine. If you bend FR-4 too far it will retain it's new shape. Bending opposite direction will usually fix that.

Got mine today, they went all the way around the planet to get to me. Swedish post with a return address for the Swedish mailer on the stamp and the EEVblog return printed on the envelope.

Funny thing is Tyvek is very strong, but the glue used to close the envelope is actually stronger than the Tyvek, which delaminated in trying to open it.

Mine also arrived today (in Sweden), marked as priority mail from Malmö (like the others). Slightly faded print on the envelope showed my address and the EEVBlog-uRuler Australian address (which lacked country!), and a sticker had the Malmö return address and postage paid for swedish post, but international mail.

Pennsylvania, USA checking in. It either arrived today or Saturday (didn't check my mail on Saturday). Mine went through NZ. (Picture attached, I think).
Quick edit: there is a orange bar-code style print on the back. I usually see them on the front, and I think it was mentioned this was missing.

Direct Link are claiming that these rulers didn't all go via NZ or Sweden, they only had that because they had to have something.
Still no explanation why it took 3 weeks to get anywhere, and why there are still dozens of countries without any delivered at all.
They said they should have all been delivered yesterday  :-DD

(FIN)

I went in for a closer look
http://i.imgur.com/xAMATvB.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/xAMATvB.jpg) Bigger picture

The middle one (third from bottom and top), IS FAULTY  :-BROKE.
Silkscreen on 2.0mm to 1.4mm is faded. Also text "EEVBLOG.COM    µRuler" text has jagged edges for the same reason. When I look really close with good light, I can see it looks like rasterized, with not enough ink. Maybe their machine ran low/out on white ink/silkscreening?

I don't actually care about this miniscule fault on mine, it just makes them unique. No need for replacements, just thought it would be good thing to report about this.

Also figured out why the rulers might be curved, only one side has red soldermask, Dave shipped these rulers so fast they didn't have time to dry out while kept straight. Now we have slightly curved rulers.  ^-^
Thin "painted" things tend to curve to the side when paint dries. That's why if thin wood needs to be kept straight (diy projector screen), it needs to be painted both sides at same time before either one dries.

Issue can be clearly seen on that top ruler. Rounded corner.

After playing around all day with my shiny new µRulers (I was doing other things and just fiddling around with them, also I played only with two but all five are the same), I noticed all of my 5 rulers have a notch at the inch measurement end. Measurement end is not straight. Not all corners are exactly the same, some rulers have bigger notch than others, one is almost non existent, if the others didn't have it I wouldn't have noticed. Millimeter start and end are straight, inches start is straight and stop looks like router was badly configured to produce these in a hurry, so it took too much from the end.

Anyone else have this? I doubt it's only my rulers. The faded silkscreen might be more rare issue. Not that it is a huge issue for me, thought I should still report it. Might still be enough to complain to pcb manufacturer for discount on possible new batch?

I was one of the people contacted later into this that was told that my address was not on file, despite me already being aware of the issue and being 100% sure I entered it in the day I pledged the money.

Were those by chance sent at a later date? That might explain why mine hasn't arrived yet.

Maybe they were using this as a test bed for future shipping, now they have all this data collected by us for free. Next time they should apply some common sense, like shipping from Sweden to neighboring countries, not from half wold away. I would be happy if my parcels and letters came from Singapore, preferably with added tracking number so I don't have wait and pray. Usually Chinese/Hong kong ebay sellers offer Singapore post option, since it seems to be fastest and less prone to customs hang up.

However I'm happy I received my rulers in reasonable time, these still arrived relatively quickly comparing to my experiences, some things from china/hong kong have never arrived. (but I got my money back from ebay)

Latvia 33% completed. They are really nice but I noticed that 2 of the 5 have small defect. Also routing registration against pad position is much worse than on other 3 which is almost perfect.

This is a list of countries who have not received them yet, as far as I can gather:
...
...
SUOMI
...
...

If you have received in one of those countries listed, please report in.

You probasbly didn't realize, but that is what people of Finland call Finland: Suomi.
In many lists-of-countries "Finland" is politely "translated" but doesn't necessarily connect for people from elsewhere.
So at least 2 reports, mine and Jahonen's (was there someone else as well, i seem to recall...)

Yesterday in the morning I mentioned waiting for a certain envelope to a housemate of mine. When I came home in the evening there was this certain envelope in the mail :)

BTW, same postage stamp as the other envelopes received in the Netherlands.

There should be a warning regarding PCB and especially SMT stuff though: "objects in photo are way smaller than they appear and then even smaller then you think" :P Gets me every time.

Today I received 5 uRulers in northern Norway.
They were sent through UAE, despite the fact that Norway is neighboring Sweden, but it might have something to do with Norway not being a member of EU.

They are slightly curved, but no notches nor any paint problems that I have come across..
Anyhow great rulers, and I order stuff from all over the world so 1 month shipping time is nothing new to me.
Thanks for the rulers, how you handled problems and informed us about them; and the blog of course.

I have yet to be a part of crowdfunding projects where communcation have stopped, though many with less details and more infrequent updates, or ones where I have a doubt that something will be delivered at some point in the future.
Most of them are behind schedule, and on that note happy 1 year anniversary for the smARtDUINO kickstarter project, but I do not mind.

I'm sure these are somewhere between whatever other post office Direct Link decided to send these off to and Canada. Anyone wants to guess if this will be through UAE or yet another country totally unrelated to either Australia or Canada? At least shipping them via Austria would have been funny given Dave's pun.

5 rulers in the mailbox Nov 22nd in Norway.
(If really wanted I can post some of the pictures I took before, during and after opening.)

Rulers are slightly warped it seems (slight arch if you look from one end to the other).
Nothing I worry about  though.

The stamp sticker thing says "Postage Paid, AE - 36716 DXB".
"Postage paid Australia" shines a bit through the sticker.

Thanks Dave! :-)

Pozible should add some kind of feedback system like on ebay, backers could log on and mark their perks/orders arrived. That would be a lot easier than this way, asking people to tell when their orders have arrived. Now that I think about it I don't get why they have not done it yet. Would get nice updating stats when orders are beginning to pop out all over the world.

I also got my 5 rulers the 22. Nov. here in Norway.

Envelope was intact, rulers were still nicely glued to the cardboard, but all have a slight warp. Two of them significantly more than the three others. The warp is about 4 mm for the worst one. Maybe it is related to moisture getting into the PCB since one of the sides are not covered with solder mask? If that is the case, I guess they will straiten out soon. Anyway, not a problem.

Thanks Dave!

You have not met the truly horrible ones, that lose half the parcels you send via them. As they were a parastatal they did this for a very long time until even the stakeholders got embarrassed of wasting public money so much and closed the division. We liked them, as they had an insurance policy that paid out very fast and paid the shipping back as well, so you could send the goods again next day for free and probably have them get through.

As is my habit I measured them using some gage blocks (NIST traceable chunks of metal with precise lengths).

They are very good indeed.  Perhaps 2 thousandths of an  inch too short per inch of measure.

I read from the blog post that Dave mentioned of 2.5% non-delivery, what is the email address to inform him of non-delivery?  Maybe the spam box eaten his email to me, or maybe my email address was not given or given right to him at all?  I did not receive any notice from Pozible also.

The notice is on the pozible update page with my email.

Woo hoo! I got something from NSW today! It wasn't in a Tyvek envelope, just a thick card envelope with a $2.60 stamp with a picture of the Queen on it.

So looks like Dave's re-mailings have finally arrived in Texas. When did you mail it? It seemed pretty quick.

I tweeted a photo of it, so whatever day that was...
But yeah, regular airmail is generally pretty quick, always has been.

I have had a couple of reports of people still not receiving their rulers after the 2nd round shipments of existing missing rulers.
Sorry, but the postal system is out of my hands, and I have no more rulers in order to ship another round. I'd have to make another large batch and that isn't economically viable.
So at some point (which is now) I have to make the call that I will simply refund those who haven't received their rulers by now. There are just some countries and regions where loss in the postal system is just too high, and it's pointless to just keep re-shipping ad-infinitum.
So if you are in this boat, please email your paypal address and I'll arrange your refund.

Can we have information about the countries and regions?

Pozible does not email update to supporters, what a feature for people to keep going to check the site.   Also, my data seem to be lost, and I had to comb the site and convinced Dave I was quite early in supporting.  The postal system here in SGP is quite reliable, but mine is still no where in sight.  Shall wait somemore and see.

Hey, I did not get any email update from day 1.  For the uCurrent on kickstarter, no issue.  I am listed in the supporter page, but no email from them and also my data also not sent to Dave.

Hey, I did not get any email update from day 1.

That is because your info was not in the Pozible system, why I do not know. I can only presume you did not fill it out.
As per my last update I am now only offering refunds on non-delivered rulers.

Any chance we can buy some extra rulers you might have left or ones that got returned?

I missed the uRuler thing and I'd like to get one, mainly because I want a ruler with your face on it hehe.

Thanks

Possible, could be my Fat finger, or could be bugs, luckily these errors are seldom.  Shall be good to have oa Dave's ruler> I have a small collection of a few different kinds now.  If they do turn up, bonus, else won't be too bothered.

Where is a good place to send this out for fab? I'd like one (and missed out on BOTH the OSH Conference here and on the Pozzible deal), and so would some friends of mine. I can get maybe 10-15 people in on the deal, not much more. I did a quick quote on Sunstone, but that was very costly - I must have selected the wrong service? Or not cost-effective at this quantity?

I think Dave used http://www.pcbcart.com/ (http://www.pcbcart.com/), no reason you couldn't do the same. From what I remember they have cheap prices also for low quantities.

10 people and 3 rulers each. More is cheaper because of bigger volume.

Please check and double check everything since those things are just off the top of my head.

Just let us know that you are making a living wage on this.  AU$15 for 5 is a great deal I think.

Like I said in the other thread, costing is:
For a $10 order of two boards:
$8.86 after fees
-$2 for the boards
-$2.60 for the stamp
-$0.03 for envelope
-$0.02 for label

$4.21 profit for stuffing one envelope.
Worth it?  :-//
Then I pay 30% tax on that.

Only 30% Taxes...?
You are really lucky...
Here in Italy :
1) Taxes are between 55% and 65%
2) Also pay taxes even if your business is in trouble and you have a budget at a loss.

Woth it...?

Only 30% Taxes...?

Yes, the company tax rate is 30%.
Person income tax rates range from 19% to 45% on a scaled bracket.
