Dubious value crowd funder: circuit classics
« on: April 22, 2016, 10:20:00 am »
https://www.crowdsupply.com/star-simpson/circuit-classics

$44 a pop for a PCB with about 5 components on it. $100 for 3. WTF!?!?

:palm:

Edit: removed a lack of attribution/permission comment about Mims as I wasn't sure this was the case or not.

Edit 2: insert rant because lots of Mims' circuits were clearly lifted from the RCA transistor manual to start with and are "general purpose circuits" anyway so any attribution or association other than the drawing style is taking the piss.

Nothing wrong with that.  It's a very niche product, and more "arty" and quirky than electronics-y.

It's certainly not a scam, I'd say it's a way for middle-aged with a bit of spare cash to remember their electronics youth.

You don't have to buy it!

Not a scam, you're right but a rip off. Even Apple can't manage that markup...

I am indeed not buying it :)

Indeed, not a scam but laughable price....

A tad expensive, but for collectors it's ok. It's a small production run. And beware of land slides  >:D

yes but sometimes its good to get back to basics instead of just writing code for a micro you have no idea how it works internally.

cheers

I'm good with that but look what you can get for less money:

I think you are misunderstanding the point of her product, it's not intended for experimenting with or learning electronics (like the kit you link to), it's more of an ornament / display piece.

It's like saying why does a painting sell for £xxx, when the canvas and paint only cost a tenner.

It's not something I'd ever buy, but I understand her project and her market.

It's a kinda nice tribute to Mims, but I wish that she'd use some better pcb's than the rather ugly Oshpark with mousebites and all.

I like the idear, but a bit expensive, even when the production PCBs are of a better quality.

I wish the OP would change the title of this post.  Like everyone has said this is not a rip off and I think it does injustice to her  :--  (if she reads this - I apologize for this)

If I had some extra cash I would buy one.  Also I am sure there is a license fee to Mims for these, and it was good to see him.   She also said she was going to use nicer blue boards.  These are show pieces to show off a piece of history. (they come with a stand)

The title of this post makes me sad  :-[ :-[ :-[

(but I am glad to find out about this)

I've changed the title to "Dubious value".

Good man.  Now go and buy your £15 pile of stuff from BitsBox, and display it proudly on your mantelpiece!

How I loved those Engineer notebooks. My father would go for business in the US and I'd send him to Radio Shack to see if there was a new one out.

So different from Elektor which had auster written all over (and still - how I waited for those).

If they were 10$ a pop I'd buy to put on my desk as toys.

I backed it. Got a signed copy of GSIE which was my bible growing up, and a second (unsigned) book which hopefully will be my 7yo's bible. The boards themselves will end up being soldered and displayed. Figured it was something nice.

It's no different than any other trinket. Some people collect old scopes or baseball cards or motorcycles. Who are you to judge?

Actually I think this post is degrading, so I am going to start a new one that honors this crowd funder.
