Already have Philips Hue and others. And simple ESP8266-based relay controls using Alexa, Google Home, or app controlled for other WiFi switches.

What is your goal though? Bare in mind you may run into regulatory issues if you're a company trying to sell this as a DIY kit instead of a user acting on his own method.
Your toaster just set fire to an African child over TCP.

I think its a great idea provided it doesnt touch mains. One of those light switch actuator as a kit would be oretty neat, you could even add a deadbolt turning kit.

A safe kit gets around alot of liability and safety issues as far as sales goes

Check the patents before you end up in court.
Many commercial products are already being sold, are you cheaper, are you better, how about security ?
So think first why your product would be different than the others, also think from a consumer point of view, will they do business with a single individual startup for their infrastructure or a brand where you can buy from in each store or internet webshop?

Some brands that have connected lighting: Emlight, Ikea, Milight, Philips, Cree, MiPow, Lifx, GE and probably forget some.

I think it's a pretty cool idea!

Must say that I am mostly into such ideas. So the question is are you aiming for the big public. or people like me who are after al those gadgets :P.
