Even though I know you're saying that tongue-in-cheek (at least a little bit), Dave I think used KickStarter more as a pre-order platform than as a mechanism for bootstrapping a product/company. He did follow his own advice

This could be counter productive, if you say the only alternative to Kickstarter is hard work. Many people will say "no thanks" and prefer the Kickstarter method.

It's unfortunately true that even if you have a great idea and a good work ethic, there is no guarantee of getting funds to make a working business out of it.

OTOH, if you are a bit lazy and have the right moral outlook, why not get free money on Kickstarter? It could even turn into a viable business.

I like it but don't forget that every corner of the world is different and for some, the funding webpages are the only way how to jump in the business or project.
