DipTrace Special Offer for Eagle Users
« on: February 06, 2018, 04:42:27 pm »
DipTrace have announced their full (unlimited) package for the special price of US$595 to existing EAGLE users.

https://diptrace.com/buy/offer/

DipTrace are following several other PCB CAD vendors following Autodesk's purchase of CadSoft Computer GmbH from Premier Farnell.

Autodesk no longer offers EAGLE CAD with a perceptual license, instead offering it only as subscription only.

This has angered many existing users, some of whom have already migrated to Circuit Studio under their special offer to EAGLE license holders.

So, if you are a EAGLE license holder & you have been looking to make the jump to DipTrace, now is perhaps the time :)

I will also add... while I do have a subscription to Eagle standard, when I took advantage of this DipTrace offer, I was not given any opportunity to prove that I had a valid Eagle subscription. I wonder if they care if a non-eagle subscribers take advantage of this?

Or hey, just pay for a month of Eagle standard ($15) and then take advantage of this offer to stay honest!  ;)

It looks like this thread would have been better at it's place in the Eagle part of the forum.

I am a KiCad user and I love it. It's getting better every year and it already has more capabilities than I need. (Except for Spice, but that's also coming).
As KiCad user almost EUR600 for a PCB package looks like an awfull lot of money, but I might even be tempted to donate as much to KiCad if I manage to do some commercial projects with it.

I came here mostly out of curiousity about what the "competition" is doing and if threads on the fist page is almost 3 years old then there does not seem to be much interest in Diptrace in this forum.

Well, your post definitely should be in Kicad part of the forum, as it has nothing to do with the topic...

We know about Kicad. We don't use it. Take a hint from the fact that people are actually willing to give all that money for PCB packages.

Kicad is awesome. We all are happy that for many people it is good enough and they didn't have to pay, and still can make PCB's.
But obviously it's not the same as other commercially made software, because it isn't.

Once it becomes good enough for professional work, there will be no need for "Kicad marketing".
It's use will spread like wildfire, by itself.
Like it did with usage of Linux/Apache web servers.

Until then, there will be other, commercial packages, people are willing to pay for because they do better job right now, not in 3 years.
I'm looking forward to see if Kicad goes in right direction. So far, it does not.

Regards,

Maybe many DipTrace users are just very happy with their choice of PCB CAD design program. I know I certainly am.

DipTrace is not perfect, no software ever is, but it does have a quick to learn, easy to operate & logical GUI.

DipTrace has added quite a bit of new & improved functionality over the last 3 years .......... but to a non-DipTrace user it probably goes unnoticed.

KiCAD is the absolute best tool in the world for the price.

It has features that will rival most paid software packages, in some cases it does it better, for others it doesn't.

Diptrace, like EAGLE, are pricey in comparison, although not as pricey as some other packages.

If you use these packages commercially you will be more drawn to them for home use and then it can seem a bit expensive unless you can use a work license at home.

Now, imagine using KiCAD commercially, you find a bug, you report it, 2 years later it MIGHT get fixed unless you can fix it yourself (note: Most users can't fix bugs).

Where software like Diptrace will outperform others is in support, you can manage around "features" or chose to pay for extra features, but you can't generally manage around bugs and support, waiting a few days for a bug fix costs enough, waiting years costs a lot more than your $600 subscription!

If you spend all day using Diptrace, EAGLE, or Altium, you're going to naturally want to use it at home, for Diptrace, i'll ignore EAGLEs stupid subscription costs, the cost isn't that high that it is unobtainable for most home users.

I have used Diptrace and while I don't actively use it, it's a good package, the developers are quick to respond to questions.

So you can't compare Diptrace / EAGLE with the likes of KiCAD as they have completely different goals.
You also have to remember that KiCAD has a lot of features that other packages lack, but when the other vendors add these features they are far more polished than KiCAD, this changes with later releases, but you still have to wait a while.

From what I can tell Diptrace still has a lot of traction for commercial use as it has one of the friendlier interfaces.

Just my opinion of course.
