Aluminium batterys
« on: January 25, 2021, 08:35:19 pm »
Are aluminium batterys a thing?
Just saw this on the news tonight. https://www.alor.is/?lang=en
They claim to start production after a few months. Exporting energy in 40foot container like units filled with this technology.
There are atleast a couple of old politicians affiliated wiht this company witch makes me think they will be tapping into taxpayers money shotly.

There are tons of "breakthrough" battery technology claims every year. The question is if it can be manufactured economically on a large scale, and if there isn't some showstopper flaw which needs to be solved first. So far barely any of those technologies found a path to real world.

Aluminium-Air primary cells have been around for donkey's years. Nobody has ever had much success making them rechargeable though...

If it's proven, where is production ready battery? I see zero info on the battery. Only the non green incandescent light bulb on their website.

These people weren't required to elaborate further on their statements by the reporters.
I my self know very little or nothing about battery technology. That's why i like to hear opinions form people who might know something about this thing.

Yes, aluminium ion batteries are a thing. Supposed to be very similar to lithium, with lower voltage and a lot safer.
They might be very cheap.
Nobody figured out how to do production of it yet.
You should sit back, until they have datasheets on their website.

Then why did you even start this thread? It's even less than vaporware, since nothing is said about what it is, except it supposedly uses aluminum. There is nothing to discuss about it, since there is no other claim other than they supposedly have something. I can make the same claims with no information any day, just bring money to my pocket.

A simple bit of Googling can help:

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?as_q=aluminum+rechargeable
It's nothing about these guys though.

Did you refine the 106,000 hits to see if any of them are authors?

Add alor to the search, and there are no relevant hits.

Joaquín Chacón is one of the executive board of Alor.

He is also an author of this scientific paper https://sci-hub.st/10.1109/SmartMILE.2013.6708215 (found via Google Scholar).

(Electrically rechargeable Aluminum-air batteries to power Smart Cities)

And back to Google Scholar to see what else he has published: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?as_q=&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_occt=any&as_sauthors=Joaqu%C3%ADn+Chac%C3%B3n&as_publication=&as_ylo=&as_yhi=&hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C34

Government-funded? What, like NASA? Dodgy science, sure. Lots of universities spin off ideas into commercial ventures and most countries have government-funded universities. What do you think the purpose of research is?

This particular venture seems credible and, based on just a 15 minute search, there's peer-reviewed scientific publications to support it.

I look at battery tech all the time. Let's face facts...tons of battery tech never sees the light of day.
Will Solid State LION ever become a reality that seriously out performs modern LION that all of us currently use?
Will carbon nano tubes or carbon sheet ever prove out?
LOL! The list is pretty endless for battery technologies that "have potential".

IMHO...why not? Not holding my breath, but it could happen...
