One point is, with the above 'amorphous' jumble of gates, is that such functions as edge detection and signal changing sensitivity (with steady state staying more quiet) are hallmarks of biological neurology.
Note that the human visual system has mechanisms dedicated to detecting and conveying when something changes, rather than just some steady state, transferring something like only 1 % of info from the eyes, to higher brain activity.
