Can a Van de Graaff do that?
They can cause a plague of lighthouse keepers, especially in a house with no door

I have to wonder how many people here have actually built a VHV Van de Graaff generator?

My first one was old fashioned using the triboelectric effect. I used a glass roller(+25 nC/J (strongly positive), a near neutral rubber belt transporting charges and a teflon top roller(−113 μC/m²). I then started using a 200kV spray charging brush on the bottom end to bump it up a bit. Have you built a Van de Graaff?. The biggest issue wasn't what many might think. When I hit about 300kV my 3"x36" PVC support tower started leaking like god damn sieve. Turns out PVC isn't an insulator because it absorbs water which is conductive. Everything must be coated with a hydrophobic coating like epoxy or silicon or you're pissing in the wind. At every gain in voltage somewhere somehow it starts breaking out.

The thing is we think we have shit all figured out until we actually have to do it which is where theory often diverges from reality. It's funny, the management of the company which just hired me as a consultant kept harping on about there is no replacement for experience. I agree; we can pretend to understand but until we have experienced the infinite number of ways something can go fucking sideways on us in reality, we have experienced little. I would hope you get that, nothing is simple, most things always turn into a complete shit show for no apparent reason.

So ya, theory is wonderful until we actually have to prove it. Not by reading some shit on the internet but actually having to do it for ourselves.

Ok, Xena, you swing the hammer and I will bail you out of the slammer when you are charged with justifiable idioticide.

Thanks Paul... The triboelectric effect that is produced by banging the silver hammer may just create an effect that the over unity crowd have been searching for...

“When you have no basis for an argument, abuse the plaintiff.” — Marcus Tullius Cicero

I learned this lesson early on and many pretend to be something, then we press a few buttons, and they become something entirely different. This would seem to be the way of the world lately imo.

Just a few little jokes between ourselves as there is no argument against willful ignorance, bullshit, self aggrandisement, and Walter Mitty/Don Quixote types who proclaim expertise in any subject under discussion...

You build ideal anything with graphite and wood pulp.  :-DD

Nature however presents many things that are ideal.

That's an interesting perspective considering you are the one calling other people names, suggesting hitting other people on the head with a hammer because you disagree and claiming to know better about any subject under discussion.

It reminds me of Trump calling Biden a sleepy-eyed old man. Meanwhile Trump is a geriatric sleepy eyed old man and can't seem to stay awake, can barely walk, constantly shitting his adult diapers and rambling incoherently. A classic case of people accusing others of the thing they are.

Chill out man, nobody is suggesting doing any harm to anyone. It was just a joke that derived from a whimsical English pop song from around 1970.

I don't recall directly threatening to hit any particular individual the head.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer was a song title on the Abbey Road album by the Beetles if you didn't already know... just to temper your gravitas a little...

Just to clear up further confusion for you Themadhippy reference to plagues of lighthouse keepers, houses with no doors, and the white hammer, are reference to the Prog rock group "Van der Graaf Generator."

As for your other points, thank you very much, I am a self confessed arsehole 😉👍, and I like to own my faults... However, your favorite device of accusing people of those things that you are most guilty is getting boring, I reserve the right to take the piss out of any willful ignorance I see, maybe hopefully increasing traffic and revenue for the forum owner by visitors checking out the latest episode of laughable drivel if nothing else, but also keeping the rest of a valuable resource free of AI driven diarrhea from pseudointelectual fabulists...

Thank you also for your concern about my continence...  shitting my pants like Trump (?) isn't something I currently suffer from fortunately, and won't for a while hopefully as I'm less than half President Trumps age... he has my sympathy if he is so afflicted.

Your ridiculous strawman analogies where you like to say :- blah blah blah, IS LIKE... then detail some unconnected topic, is I assume why you made the Trump/Biden connection, where it is used for some illustrative absurdity? I'm not sure, perhaps you are confused just as you say is president Trump¹? Perhaps talk through it with a friend, (if you have any... 😢), your horse, (they're great listeners), or your life coach, (we'll call him Sancho Panza 😁).

¹Trump has however undoubtedly been more successful in his endeavours than either of us, whether we like him or not... render until Caesar that which is Caesars and all that...

Just be careful what you say about him though, you're on the same land mass, and the Mounties won't be able to protect you. 🫵🤨
(Even if they wanted to)

As always sweetie, have a great day, and all the best.

Not at all and trump came to mind because he is always accusing others or projecting what he is or does. He called Biden sleepy eyed and crooked but if we look trump is the one who is sleepy eyed and as were now finding out corrupt to the core. Your posts reminded me of trump always gaslighting and projecting. I wasn't implying you shit your pants like trump that's absurd. You twisted the conversation and projected just like trump might though, proving my point.

I like this, "Just be careful what you say about him though, you're on the same land mass, and the Mounties won't be able to protect you." which is classic gaslighting/projection very similar to trump. Trumps go to line is... I'm ok with (something) but many many people are not and might burn down your house or hang you, they don't like (something). Very similar to a six year old pretending their imaginary friend "might do something" rather than them as a veiled threat.

I can unpack your psychological disorders all day long, sweetie.

.

I can unpack your psychological disorders all day long, sweetie.

You're a qualified psychiatrist as well! Fucking jezzuz H Crickey! you must have been in college until you were forty! :-DD... You'd better run along and get some Xena analysis done, it'll take more than a day for you to unpack my legion of problems beside your other pressing duties...

.

I wasn't twisting anything, you brought it up, I have no particular interest in your straw man comments, unconnected perplexing analogies, or Mr Trump himself...however, you clearly wrote:-

...It reminds me of Trump calling Biden a sleepy-eyed old man. Meanwhile Trump is a geriatric sleepy eyed old man and can't seem to stay awake, can barely walk, constantly shitting his adult diapers.

Your statement clearly implies that you think I'm a sleepy old hypocrite, I have ambulatory problems, and am incontinent. So state your point clearly,  otherwise own the comment, or retract it, don't deny its content, that's just barefaced lying... of course I shouldn't perhaps be surprised.

.

For fuck sake! You really are all over the place aren't you! first I'm a geriatric old man, and now I'm a six year old with an imaginary friend called Donald.

***********
For the record when I was little I had an imaginary friend called Peter, he was the only one who was nice to me, he had a horse called Dobie, and a bicycle with a candle in its headlight. Peter was a cinema projectionist, and lived in a house with a big plastic shark on the roof... we used to tell each other all our secrets, then something bad happened in my life when I was eleven and he disappeared for good. I've been a disagreeable cunt ever since... or perhaps I was his imaginary friend and I'm the one that was abandoned and doesn't really exist 🤔 I'm not sure... 😵‍💫

Analyse that fucker!  :-DD :-DD :-DD :-DD
*******

Ahem... I must just take my pills...

Anyway where were we?... Oh yeah...
Why would I veil a threat? I have no reason to threaten you! If I did have a reason to feel that way, I wouldn't make a threat as I assure you I couldn't do anything about it, or at least I wouldn't waste resources I don't have on actioning it, for instance I don't even own a silver hammer  :-DD

Just suggested that Mr Trump does seem to like dealing with his adversaries very decisively, and you seem very anti Trump.

Don't worry though, my mate Don is busy murdering people in the Middle East at the moment to keep the price of oil high, so he won't worry about insignificant little peasants like you or I...

*****

I'm interested in your hatred of Trump, you seem fixated, so instead of your wasting time with my self confessed problems, perhaps we can start with that... would you like to talk more about Trump as you brought him into the conversation?

Do you despise him because of his questionable actions as a world leader, or is it that you are jealous of his financial success... maybe it's his fame, (or infamy), that you covet?

Your jealousy of Trump in that case may just be disappointment in your own life, and that is perhaps the reason that you feel it necessary to fabricate this on-line persona, (sorry it's not fooling anyone), alternatively it could be a feeling of Weltschmerz?

Be true to yourself and people will respect you for it. If you're not interested in the respect of others then stop trying to garner it online by self aggrandisement, it won't work, and it will be a pointless achievement if you did.

Perhaps your pleasure in life is trying to make others feel dissatisfied of themselves? I'd like to know just for personal interest.

Anyway, thanks for the entertainment, I look forward to the next installment of Slop "Soap".

Best regards,
Your good friend.
Xena. 😍

Sorry. I should have put up the new standard disclaimer:-

For the benefit of Electrodynamic, (who let's face it is a bit 🤪), that was a reference to the track White Rabbit on the album Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane, and is in no way intended as a threat, slight, or insult directed at him or anyone else.

😁👍

Very noble of you 😉
Thank Themadhippy ...
Grace Slick is a very talented singer and lyricist,
actually writing the song in 1965 before joining Jefferson Airplane.

The inspiration for the song from Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson story has more than a passing factual resemblance to some of the fantastic threads in this forum.

✌️😵‍💫
Peace out, dudes.
