Standards compliant(ish)
« on: September 02, 2021, 11:35:46 am »
I guess this is kind of dodgy technology.

Bought an item on Amazon, which arrived without the legally-required UK plug. Queried this with the vendor who replied:

Hello,
Please rest assured that the plugs and adapters of our products comply with international standards.

You can see from the photos that there must be some really weird international standards out there.

Double-insulated?

Double-insulated?

No, it's a metal-bodied fan and must be earthed.

Double-insulated?

To my understanding, that would also require a non-earthed plug/cable.

No, it's a metal-bodied fan and must be earthed.

Having a metal housing doesn't preclude double insulated status; you just have to have both basic and supplementary insulation between current carrying conductors and the accessible metal parts.

EDIT: The death-dapter isn't compliant, however, as it is unfused (a guess, but I bet I'm right), and the pin sockets look to be unshuttered.

It is similar to this one:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08XNJDLQ7

so the only insulation is the black paint. That one doesn't have an earth connection. This one does, and a big green earth wire into the lead.

Yeah, you win that one.

And that. :)

That 13A plugtop is not compliant, BS1363 requires that a BS1362 fuse be fitted.

I must confess I've never seen a tube-axial fan on a plugtop before, but all the mains voltage ones that I have seen have been double insulated.

I think these are not intended to be finished consumer products, hence they usually come with no plugs or anything, and whoever manufacturers the product they will be a part of deals with stuff like trading laws.

I seriously doubt if the vendor is the OEM. The build quality is good - decent strain relief at the fan end, proper earth point, nicely terminated cable, etc. Just the wrong plug and the vendor has no idea what he's selling - his latest comment says, in part, "The European plug has only two pins, and the British plug has three pins. When the European plug is connected to the British standard After the converter, there is indeed no need to connect the ground pin." Literally, there are only two pins but I think that demonstrates the limits of his knowledge of his product (and his engineer's competence, who apparently says this is fine).
