Changing horizontal package to vertical (TO220, TIP120)
« on: August 02, 2020, 07:47:43 pm »
Hi everyone,

I´ve drawn a schematic where I use the darlington transistor TIP120.
Unfortunately, the package is TO220H (horizontal), this takes too much place from the pcb, also I must mounting them to a heatsink.
Question: How could I change the horizontal into vertical package ?
Of course, they are a generic TO220V package in the library avaible, but I want to have the darlington symbol in the schematic.

In ver 7+ that I have there is an icon on the left toolbar that looks like a resistor with one smaller and larger. Click that and select the library that has the TO220 vertical package, and select it from the list. Next, click on the transistor on the board that will be changed.

There other ways, type in the text bar "change package" and point to the package in the library, Or click on the wrench, drop down to package and do the same.

I'm sure that there are more than a few libraries that have the vertical package.

Hi !

Click that and select the library that has the TO220 vertical package, and select it from the list. Next, click on the transistor on the board that will be changed.

This works but will also change the symbol in the schematic (from darlington to "normal" ).

Doing this :

And there is nothing else you could do.

Make sure you are doing this in the board an not the schematic. Also use the same library as the horizontal device. Click on the i icon and click on the TO220H device and see from where it came.

If that still changes the symbol, get in to the library and assign a new package (TO220V) to the darlington transistor in question.

I can show you how if you wish.

Go to the control panel and expand the tree view under "Library"
Next select the library that the TIP120 came from, and double click it to open it in the Library Editor
Do this and I'll get back to you after you confirm that much here.

Got Eagle 9.6.2 (Free),

You can open the library in the control panel, open the library power transistors, click on TIP120 and right from it, it shows the symbol and the package.
You couldn´t do anything else.

Try again to upload the screenshot...

edit and still won´t work

edit 2:

I ask the question again, do you see 3 vertical panes? Is the left one where the library is?
left double click on the library for the TIP120. Without a screenshot, I can't help you.

I can see the image in your PM. You must double left click to open it in the editor. If that doesn't work, right click and see what options there are.

Works !  :-+

Unfortunately, I have to search for an alternative to eagle - In the last hour I´ve experienced, that there are no longer eagle-only licenses avaible (want to change from fee to a real license).
You can get eagle only in fusion360 included - for 58€/month, way too expensive for users like me... :(

Good! :phew:
You'll notice the horizontal one has no hole. Somehow it got deleted. If you want to try navigating the tree view and learn to edit the library, I can help you tomorrow if you wish.

Found nothing about it, any hints are welcome , because I´ve tried other programs like kicad or target - Eagle fits to me best...

Try giving them a call tomorrow and see if you can purchase a license for version 7.
As far as I remember they have support in Germany if that's where you're at. I will never upgrade to anything higher. I have had Eagle since v3.xx, and everything after v7 is crap. And when Kicad gets its act together, I will perhaps migrate. Not now though.

So finally I could managed it... :)

Upgrading to version 9.6. , it was piece of a cake.
Just jump in the library, select the TIP120, click to "add package", select TO220V, name the connections - Done....
I swear, this wasn´t implemented in version 9.2., as I couldn´t find it.
Thx at all.
What Eagle 7 license concerns, I´ll contact them in the next days.

It's not so much an EAGLE version thing as a library thing. The "old" EAGLE Libraries commonly had separate "components" for different mounting options of MANY parts, where it always seemed more natural to me to have multiple packages for the same component.  I don't know why.  For TO220 parts, it ALMOST makes sense, because there is that heatsink tab that you may want to do something with, when the part is mounted horizontally.  Other parts, not so much :-(
Some of those libraries were very old (they were that way when I started using EAGLE 3.55 or so.)

The cynic in me says maybe CadSoft is updating their libraries so that they won't work with older versions of EAGLE any more.  :-(

No need to do this now.
Got a one year for free license for fusion 360, my eagle 9.6.2 changed from free to premium version.
